Boo Radley’s courageous heart is shown throughout the book as he is considered an outcast to the community. Although he is looked down upon and even considered to be a monster by children, he connects with Jem and Scout by giving them simple little gifts of gum, pennies, and soap bar sculptures (). These simple little gifts intrigued them and they were always excited to check the knothole in the tree to see if Boo had left them something.
