Problem and Concern
If you were told by someone that you cannot read a certain book, you would ultimately want to read the book in spite of the person who had told you that you could not. However, what if you had no idea someone was preventing you from reading a certain book, and because of them you would never be exposed to the ideas that are presented in this book? This idea is not something that people consider as they go through the syllabus for their English class, or browse through their local library. Students, and residents of a town simply take what is presented in front of them instead of acknowledging that some books are likely missing. Book banning is a serious issue in the United States, though the topic is not well known among the people who are most affected by it. This issue is right at the core of media literacy, and it is generating people who are missing out on reaching a higher level of media literacy because of something that was ultimately not their choice. Over the years, many books that are considered to be classics by many have been challenged by people who are afraid of what the contents of the book will do to the minds of their children as well as the other people around them. While some books have crude content that is unsuitable for certain age groups, it should not be left up to a small committee of people whether or not that book is made available. They want the student to get a certain message and level of challenging reading out of the book. Teachers need to have big class discussions about the events in the book and what they mean. By showing students that every event is not black and white, students will be able to attach the questionable events in a book to a positive message. Being able to get past of the first dimension of reading is something that teachers need to do very well. By being open with their students about the book and what happens in it, students will feel more comfortable speaking out and letting their teacher know that they do not want to read that book. It is at this point that the teacher needs to respect the decision of the student and provide a similar book that the student will be more comfortable reading. The student will still get a lot from the book, but in the end they will feel good about what they read instead of feeling uncomfortable.
