A Brief Case Study on a Transnational Corporation In Your Home Country Gabriel Ferreira International Public Relations – PUR6608 class University of Florida THE BRAZILIAN MILK FRAUD SCANDAL   2 The Brazilian Dairy Market background. Over the last decade, the Brazilian dairy market has been one of the most fast growing dairy markets in the world. In the early 90s, the Brazilian agro-industrial milk sector suffered three very important changes: it starting being an open economic market for international competitors; at the time inflation was decreasing; and so milk prices drop significantly. All of these changes would not have been possible without the implementation of the Real Plan in 1994 (the new Brazilian coin plan until today) that strengthened investments in the country, especially in the milk-producing sector. These investments also lead to an increase in population number and to changes in alimentary habits (Nahmias, 2008). By becoming such a lucrative sector, the milk and dairy product sector in Brazil became the target for food adulteration processes. Its high-value role in feeding specific groups inside the population, such as children’s, women and elders, and regarding the expensive undergoing steps to achieve a final product that could be sold in the market, was some of the key aspects that attracted...

Grolsch was the 21st-largest global beer brand, sold 51.5 percent of its volume in international markets, and exported to 70 countries. However, its poor profitability in international markets--four countries alone accounting for two-thirds of foreign sales--and churn of markets and distribution partners raised concerns about the company's international strategy and execution. Grolsch's 60 years of history in foreign markets provides a rich backdrop to introduce a range of international strategy topics, including performance assessment, rationale for expansion, market selection, and choice of entry mode. Questions 1) Why did Grolsch globalize, and how well has it performed internationally? 2) What are the key elements and limitations of its emphasis on adaptation, in particular? 3) What changes would you suggest to Grolsch’s historical strategy? Brazilian Agriculture and the Wto

...1 AGRICULTURE IN BRAZIL: FROM THE 1980’s TO THE G-20 MAURO MASON DE CAMPOS ADORNO Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements of the Degree of Master by Coursework in International Policy Studies School of Politics Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences La Trobe University Bundoora, Victoria 3083 Australia 2 July 2005 Abstract The Brazilian economy transformed from a state of financial crisis in the 1980’s to become a leading agriculture exporter in the late 1990’s. Economic reforms implemented by the Real Plan were a response to a bankrupt decade of failed economic plans and high inflation rates. In this period agriculture played a key role in the control of the inflation and in the stabilization of the economy. The domestic environment of the Brazilian economy and the role of agriculture helped Brazil to develop a more active role and led it to seek for a leadership position in the international agricultural negotiations. On the eve on the WTO’s Cancun Round of negotiation a new coalition of developing countries formed the G-20. The Group was born from a Brazilian initiative and for the first time a group of developing countries stood up against the developed countries in the agriculture negotiations. 3 Acknowledgments I would like to dedicate this thesis to my mother Ana and my brother Matheus. Brazil – Country Report

...Brazil – Country Report Introduction The country has been expanding its presence in international financial and commodities markets, and is one of a group of four emerging economies called the BRIC countries. Although struggling with social inequality and infrastructural deficits we think that Brazil is already a great world power. Also what attracted us to Brazil as a case study for this report is it’s exotic character. Not many people really know the extent of Brazil’s recent growth and improvements in social security and in overcoming poverty. We expect the labor force and operational costs to be low, like in the other emerging countries like China. However we take in to consideration higher costs involving security and bureaucracy. Chapter 1 – Short presentation of the country The Federative Republic of Brazil is the largest country in both South America and the Latin America Region. It is the world's fifth largest country, both by geographical area and by population, with over 193 million people. It is the largest Lusophone country in the world, and the only one in the Americas. Bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the east, Brazil has a coastline of 7,491 km. It is bordered on the north by Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and the French overseas region of French Guiana; on the northwest by Colombia; on the west by Bolivia and Peru; on the southwest by Argentina and Paraguay and on the south by Uruguay. A Model of Service Classification Based on Consumer Needs

...A Model of Service Classification Based on Consumer Needs Service Operations Management Track FARIAS PEREIRA , Suzana Carla Doctoral student at Fundação Getúlio Vargas/EAESP Department of Administration of the Production and Operations CATTINI , Orlando Jr. Professor of Fundação Getúlio Vargas/EAESP Department of Administration of the Production and Operations Abstract Most of the literature and research on services focus on the characteristics that distinguish products from service. One of the topics to be improved is the service classification . Most service classifications do not consider the client’s needs as a crucial parameter either to the quality of the service or to the success of the strategy. This study presents a service classification outline and proposes a framework that takes the consumer needs into account. The dimensions considered in the classification model were defined through the analysis of the management literature and questionnaires answered by Brazilian marketing and operations specialists. 1-Introduction The main aim of establishing service typologies is to offer insights for the development of strategies (Lovelock, 1983). However, most classification models do not consider the clients’ needs, which is a crucial parameter considering the delivery of a quality service and the success of any strategy. The first models were defined based on operational aspects, under the service provider’s perspective (Cook et al, 1999; Mills and Margulies,...

Smes Failures

...ECONOMIC IMPLICATIONS OF CONSTANT POWER OUTAGES ON SMES IN NIGERIA International Centre for Basic Research, 20 Limpopo Street, FHA, Abuja College of Engineering and Engineering Technology, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State been identified [2]. A particular finding revealed the high cost of providing back-up energy (partly infrastructural) for SMEs which sometimes is as critical as three times the cost of publicly supplied electricity [3], [4]. In Nigeria and perhaps generally, SMEs classification is done on the basis of capital investment and employed labour force while other criteria could be the annual turnover or gross output [5]. Until very recently, energy was rarely cited as one of the problems militating against the development of SMEs in Nigeria and elsewhere. This study is built on the argument that, unlike larger businesses, the establishment and operation of SMEs promotes economic development which by extension, boosts a country’s GDP number [6] (see Fig. 1). A separate study identifies this link (between SMEs and GDP) but could not establish if it is actually responsible for economic growth [7] while another study presents a decreasing link of 51%, 39% and 16% of GDP being produced by SMEs in high-income, medium income and low-income countries respectively [8]. Elsewhere, it has been confirmed that SMEs were responsible for pulling the US out of economic slump and can therefore, serve...

International Fertilizer Industry Analysis

...I. Introduction Driven largely by a growing population and rising incomes around the world, agricultural demand is expected to continue rising in order to ensure abundant quantities of high-quality food, feed, fibre, energy and even industrial products. The foundation of sustainable agriculture is soil fertility , a term that encompasses the soil’s nutrient content, the amount of soil organic matter, the soil structure, its PH balance and the presence of microorganisms(IFA,2012). Most soils lack at least some plant nutrients , and growing crops remove nutrients from the soil. Soil nutrients must be replenished when removed and supplied when deficient. It takes years and sometimes decades for natural processes to restore nutrients in the soil, which means that they no longer suffice to support global agricultural production. Traditional methods for restoring soil fertility, which entail long fallow periods and shifting agriculture into new areas, may contribute to deforestation, given current pressures on land use. Although historically sustainable, these practices no longer suffice to meet the needs of the current and future population levels and density. Organic sources of nutrients provide fewer nutrients than most people think, but they are usually excellent for improving other aspects of soil fertility. Inorganic sources contain only plant-available nutrients and therefore have no direct influence on soil structure or the presence of microorganisms. This is why agronomists...
