Quote: “ Alex walked through Port Tallon, past the Fisherman’s Arm’s Tavern and up the cobblestone street toward the library. It was the middle of the afternoon, but the village seemed to be asleep, the boats bobbing in the harbor, the streets and pavement empty. A few seagulls wheeled lazily over the rooftops, uttering the usual morning cries. The air smelled of salt and dead fish.” Page 145

The theme is good versus evil. It builds in the story from the beginning when Alex’s Uncle (a good man) is killed… “When the doorbell rings at three in the morning, it's never good news.”
… but then it turns out that he is a spy and was murdered.
“He had followed the trail left by a dead man. It was only now that he realized it might lead only to a grave.”
Then Alex goes after the evil Sayle, who it turns out was responsible for Uncle Ian’s death.
“Believe me, It would be better if we didn't meet again. Go back to school. Go back to your life. And next time they ask you, say no. Killing is for grown-ups and your still a child.”
In the end good triumphs over evil, because Sayle ends up dead and Alex survives.
