How would you feel if you discovered that you were the world's most talented dancer at age 13 and didn’t even liked what you did? What if you wanted to quit and abandon what you did? This was the case for 13 year old Misty Copeland at an after care program at her school. Her drill team coach told her to try out ballet to see what it would be like. No one ever expected her to already be en pointe after only 3 months of ballet. This was only the beginning for Misty Copeland.

Misty love the fast rhythm and the upbeat music. While dancing, her teacher noticed that she might have had a potential for ballet. Her teacher recommended classes once a week. Misty decided to write about it in her journal. “I walked out to the middle of the gym to join the other dancers. I drew myself up to my full height and focused my eyes straight ahead. Then, for the first time in my life, I placed my hand on the long horizontal rail they used for support. The barre.” (Copeland 19)

Misty decided to write about her what she thought after her first class. “I didn’t like it. Where the drill team was overflowing with energy, the hour spent in the gym at the Boys & Girls Club was repetitive. Ballet seemed to be nothing more than learning where to place our feet and how to bend our arms. It didn’t seem like dance at all.” Ballet is the backbone to all styles of dance but it’s not the most entertaining style of dance.

Misty’s dance teacher started to notice something about her and offered dance classes. Misty knew she couldn’t afford it so she told her she would think about it. One day, her teacher offered Misty a ride home. Misty had no choice but to say yes and reveal where she had been living in the motel. Shocked, her dance teacher offered Misty to come live with her.
