Broccoli How Is It Grown
My project selection is broccoli. I decided to do a research project on this crop because harvesting broccoli was my first job when I got out of high school. Also, I will like to know more about this plant. This crop can be grown during the spring and fall season if well timed. This plant needs full sun and needs to be grown on sandy soil. This crop is said to be the easiest vegetable to harvest because it grows on plants that is about waist height and workers don’t have to bend over as much. A common pest on broccoli is Cabbage worms. These pests are the larvae of moths and butterflies.
The word broccoli comes from the Latin word brachium and the Italian word braccio, which means “arm”. Broccoli is a high-quality vegetable for fresh use and is one of the more popular frozen vegetables. Broccoli is highly nutritious and has been deemed an anti-cancerous food by the American Cancer Society. This vegetable is a good source of Vitamin A, calcium, and Vitamin B2. Broccoli has to be grown on well drain soil pH should be 6.0 to 6.5.

The Learning Experiance

...describe a single informal learning experience that I have had broccoli. It will discuss three types of conditioning or learning, classical conditioning, operant conditioning, and cognitive-social learning. This paper will show how each type of conditioning could have been the reason for the response that shaped view of broccoli to this day. As a young child I was never one to eat too many vegetables. My mother would make meals with some type of vegetable on the side because as we all well aware of is that we need a good diet that includes vegetables. However this is something that is hard to enforce into young children and in my case I was no different. One evening my mother cooked a meal with broccoli as the vegetable of choice. Just like most vegetables I did not want to eat it. The smell, color, taste, and texture was not something I enjoyed. After sitting for a long time starring at this frightful food my mother forced me to eat it. What happened next would forever shape my thinking on broccoli, I threw it all up. Fast forward 36 years and to this day I cannot smell broccoli without my stomach turning. Broccoli and I from that one day are as incompatible as oil and water. Classic conditioning according to Carpenter and Huffman (2010) is learning that occurs when neutral stimulus (NS) becomes paired (associated) with an unconditioned stimulus (UCS) to elicit a conditioned response (CR). The learned response to the broccoli episode from above could have been through...

The Epiphany of Veggies

...that I really did like veggies. Growing up I couldn’t stand most veggies that my mother served. Outside of corn on the cob, drenched in butter, my mother had a tendency to boil all vegetables to death. I learned that was the way she was taught from her mother so naturally that way was the norm. Broccoli, carrots, and summer squash were all boiled so that they were always limp and drained of the color that proved they were once alive. No cheese sauce on the planet would save these once proud members of the vegetable community. This process was repeated for years until I met my wife. My wife opened my eyes to the fact that veggies didn’t have to be boiled and flavorless. I can remember the day, March 17, 1988 to be exact, when she decided that she would cook for the both of us. She made a simple chicken dish but she also cooked broccoli as a veggie side. At first I was apprehensive, but I told her that I would always try something once just in case I liked it. I never knew that cooked broccoli could have so much flavor. I was amazed by the thought of cooked broccoli that had a crunch and wasn’t a bleached shade of army green but almost evergreen in color. I ate the entire thing of broccoli. We talked about how she was taught to prepare vegetables and she was surprised that I only knew the boiling way. Afterwards she changed my opinion on many vegetables that for years I shunned at the...
