Bruin Buddies Preschool In upcoming years, Sam Barlow High School plans to renovate much of its school campus; several new additions are set in the blueprints for a more revitalized and rejuvenated education facility. While particular subject areas within the school are getting redesigned, such as math classrooms, science labs, and the athletics stadium, other courses are either not getting touched or getting cut completely from the school campus. Unfortunately, child development is one of those programs getting cut. The child development building itself will no longer exist as a preschool for the local community or as a learning facility for high school students who seek experience in an education career field. Teaching is not for everyone. “In a recent longitudinal study of a nationally representative cohort, teacher turnover, as measured annually by the combined percentage of “movers” and “leavers,” after five years was 46 percent”(Aragon). The study found that 46% of teachers with fresh degrees either move schools consistently to find their footing, or leave the education field entirely after only 5 years. With such a high turnover rate for teachers, tons of money and time are wasted to get those degrees. Child development classes in high schools are a great way for high school students to help determine post high school plans. Whether it be with a new or existing passion for child education, or a realization of unsuitedness. For the education purposes of high school students and national teacher shortage, SBHS and GBSD should reconsider putting child development on the chopping …show more content…
With a waiting list of young children, some signed up at birth, Bruin Buddies preschool is a highly recommended program in the local community due to its structure. By sending their kids to the child development class preschool program at the high school, parents know that their children will be receiving one-on-one time, which is necessary for kindergarten readiness. It is proven that a smaller child to teacher ratio increases the amount of educational instruction, individual interaction and support a child is receiving, as well as reducing chaotic behavioral outbreaks.
