In order to operate at an efficient level Riordan will need to add implement the use of databases, which will streamline their operations. With the company having 550 employees and earning $46 million a year Riordan is a successful Fortune 100 company. The company has three different plants they use to produce the plastic products. The plant located in Albany, Georgia is responsible for the manufacturing the plastic beverage bottles for various vendors. Its plant in Pontiac, Michigan develops custom plastic parts and the plant in Hangzhou, China makes the plastic parts for sports fan across the world. Riordan headquarters is in San Jose. Riordan’s main clients are car part fabricators, aircraft fabricators, the DoD, beverage and bottle manufacturers, and appliance companies. As you can see, the company is spread out in various locations within the United States and overseas. As of now, Riordan has a finance and accounting system in place for each of their four locations. Each company uses a different system. The system that San Jose uses is a Windows based product however is does not include the source code. The Pontiac manufacture purchased a database from an independent company however; the company is no longer in business. Albany also purchased a database from an independent vendor, the systems run on a pair of AS400's, using UNIX operating system, use PC's (Windows) as workstations, and is programmed in RPG400 (University of Phoenix Virtual Organization, 2013). The finance and accounting department has been searching for a single company that will build one database for all its different companies to use but has yet to find one. With Riordan having 20 main customers that they deal with for its DoD and fan contracts, a database was put in place to maintain and log information. Just like the finance and accounting system, everyone has their own database that they use at their individual plants. Some sub departments even use pens and pads to track their numbers. To ensure the company is providing the best products for its customers, the company is beginning the process to introduce a combined system that will bring the company into the electronic age. The HR Department also has an out of age system, which was installed in 1992. This system records the demographics of the employees, salary, the date they were hired, the organizational structure, and calculates time-off for employees. If one wanted to make a change, the employees manager will hand write the change and pass it along to the workforce administrator whom will make the claim. Another out dated process the company uses is the way the resumes are kept. The resumes are simply filed away in alphabetical order with a disposition date of one year after the date it was received. HR also tracks issues such as harassments and gripes which is stored in file cabinet in their office. To bring the company’s business systems up to speed with the 21st Century, Riordan hired a reputable database building company to combine all its different and individual systems to one mega system that will maintain all the company’s business. Being as though the four separate companies have a different products and personal the database company will implement different security measures that will appear as though each sub company has its own individual database when in all actuality it just one big database. In addition, all paper files will be scanned, converted to PDF files for easy storage, and easy to retrieve.

Riordan Manufacturing Systems

...Riordan Manufacturing Systems BSA/375 October 6, 2014 Riordan Manufacturing Systems Hugh McCauley, COO, has submitted a service request for the Human Resources (HR) department to integrate the department's current systems into one integrated application. Mr. McCauley is the main point of contact for this project. The systems analyst has reviewed the service request and studied a listing of what systems are currently in place. Using the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) methodology, the analyst should complete the request within the six month time frame requested by Mr. McCauley. Completing this request on time will allow the HR department to use the new system by the second quarter of the next year (University of Phoenix, 2011). Project Overview The current system is linked to a financial systems package that only keeps track of employee information. Many of the sub-systems were created and are run by individuals such as managers or data entry clerks. Currently, there are seven different sub-systems operating within the HR department. All but one sub-system is run internally by Riordan personnel. Workers' Compensation is outsourced to a third-party provider, which uses its system and keeps its records. The sub-systems use different methods of collecting and viewing data. The common thread seems to be the use of Excel. Hard copy files are stored in random locations such as locked files in offices or a central storage area. There is little consistency in...

EFSA Scientific Report (2009) 231, 1-107 © European Food Safety Authority, 2009 Review of the potential health impact of β-casomorphins and related peptides SUMMARY Proteins are a very diverse family of large organic compounds involved in many important biological processes. Following their enzymatic hydrolysis during food processing or digestion, proteins may release fragments from their primary amino acid sequence. These fragments are called peptides, and many of them are known to be physiologically active. The possible beneficial effects of bioactive peptides have attracted increasing interest in recent years. On the other hand, there are also reports suggesting that some food-derived peptides might adversely affect human health. Among these, β-casomorphin-7 (BCM7), a peptide sequence present in the milk protein β-casein, has been suggested to...

Isolation of Rare Circulating Tumour Cells in Cancer Patients

...and expand the understanding of the biology of metastasis. Current strategies for isolating CTCs are limited to complex analytic approaches that generate very low yield and purity9. Here we describe the development of a unique microfluidic platform (the ‘CTC-chip’) capable of efficient and selective separation of viable CTCs from peripheral whole blood samples, mediated by the interaction of target CTCs with antibody (EpCAM)-coated microposts under precisely controlled laminar flow conditions, and without requisite pre-labelling or processing of samples. The CTC-chip successfully identified CTCs in the peripheral blood of patients with metastatic lung, prostate, pancreatic, breast and colon cancer in 115 of 116 (99%) samples, with a range of 5–1,281 CTCs per ml and approximately 50% purity. In addition, CTCs were isolated in 7/7 patients with early-stage prostate cancer. Given the high sensitivity and...
