...QUEENSLAND UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY Ethic Case Study BSB111 Business Law and Ethics Naufal Budi 8/17/2015 Word Count: 1220 Part A Utilitarianism 1. Shop: The fruit and vegetable shop that is operated by Samantha is one of the major stakeholders in the business. Beth has been stealing food from the shop and there is a risk that can jeopardise the shop because it is already struggling to keep up. 2. Nathan: If Nathan doesn’t tell Samantha about Beth, there is a chance that Samantha will know about this in the future and if Samantha identified that Nathan knows about Beth he can be in a great risk of being fired. On the other hand, if Nathan does tell Samantha about Beth. It would ruin his relationship with her and potentially harm her but at the same time it can boost Nathan role or maybe even get promoted if he tells Samantha. 3. ...Part A Utilitarianism When applying the consequentialist theory of Utilitarianism to Tom’s decision on whether to falsify information on his resume I have found exaggerating details on his resume be unethical. The table on the following page analyses the benefits and harms of each course of action for Tom. With a higher overall number of harms and lower overall number of benefits from falsifying information than if he is honest. In line with utilitarian theories when looking at the wellbeing of all stakeholders the ‘greatest good’ comes from Tom being honest. If Tom is to exaggerate the details of his employment he could cause a likely negative impact on all stakeholders from his family to his possible future supervisor and peers while only providing an uncertain benefit for himself and others. Being honest may reduce his chances in securing employment but will provide a bigger possible benefit to all stakeholders overall regardless of success or failure in securing employment. Tom ought to be honest in his work history; as the requirement of previous experience is only desirable he is still has a chance at securing employment, and will be fairer on all applicants, the hiring company and it’s employees thus providing the greatest good for the greatest number of people. ¬ Stakeholders Lie - Harms Lie - Benefits Truth – Harms Truth - Benefits Tom – employment could be halted due to misleading information – if unable to secure employment confidence for future...

...My year abroad – Brisbane, Australia 2005/2006 When I heard that we all had to do an obligatory study abroad for one year, there was no doubt in my mind, Australia, here I come! I’d always wanted to go to Australia and this was a great opportunity for me to do that, to fulfil one of my dreams. Preparing for my year abroad There were a lot of things that had to be arranged prior to my departure, things as selection of subjects, having them approved, finding a place to live, fill out all applications, applying for visa, insurance etc. It is important to keep that in mind, and to take care of everything in good time before departure. And also remember that you have to spend a lot of money even before you leave, for the plane ticket, bond for your apartment, school money, visa, insurance etc. I was quite surprised over the amount of money I had to spend on different things, I hadn’t thought of that. You don’t have to have accommodation before you arrive, but I wanted everything to be taken care of when I arrived. So I checked www.iec.no early, in April I think , to see if anyone wanted a housemate. Here, I found two Norwegian girls looking for a third, we started talking and I got the room. Now, I am located in a very modern, pretty, three-room apartment in Kangaroo Point, close to both the city and QUT. The apartment also comes with a shared pool and BBQ-facilities. I pay $130 ($1 = 5 NKr. approx.) pr. week, which is a reasonable price for a place like this. Prices vary...

...Part A (a): Ethical dilemma The ethical dilemma that Kate faces is whether to report the potential milk contamination to the Queensland Food Safety Authority (FSA). Ethical Egoism Under ethical egoism, Kate would follow Ben’s decision and not pursue the milk contamination issue further. Kate’s main self-interest is that she keeps her job at the restaurant to provide for her family and fund her university degree. Therefore, upholding Ben’s self-interest of not saying anything, will not only ensure Kate her job, it may also result in her being seen as more trustworthy and loyal to the restaurant owners. Hence, Kate not saying anything is justified under egoism. Utilitarianism To solve a dilemma under utilitarianism, all the positives and negatives must be evaluated in order to ascertain what will give the greatest good. The following are positives and negative if Kate chooses not to alert authorities of the contamination. Positives: Kate’s job will be safe as Ben threatened her that she may be fired if she pursues the matter. Ben and the restaurant owner would be pleased as any bad publicity associated with the restaurant could severely affect business. Bad publicity may also force employees to become retrenched, including Kate and the close friends she has made at her work. Furthermore, the risk that anyone has contaminated milk is miniscule, and lastly, FSA inspectors won’t disrupt Service because they won’t be called out. Negatives: Innocent members of the community...
