Health People 2020 Objectives

Health People 2020 Objectives
In today’s society it has never been more pressing for society to take serious its health and health practices and make changes to better themselves. Using Health People 2020 as a foundation this paper will serve to identify objectives and identify how biological risk (including age-related risk), environmental risk (including economic risk), and behavioral risk contribute to family health risks for those objectives noted by Health People 2020. The two objectives that will be discussed include smoking, to include health related problems that result in this behavior, and respiratory illnesses, including Asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Within the paper, prevention of exacerbation will also be noted as it relates to each illness. Tobacco Use
Scientific knowledge about the health effects of tobacco use has increased greatly since the first Surgeon General’s report on tobacco was released in 1964. The most successful interventions of many clinical trials incorporated elements of social or organizational change to modify individual behavioral risk factors, such as alcohol and tobacco consumption, diet, and physical activity. Most behaviors are not randomly distributed in the population, but rather are socially patterned and often cluster with one another. Thus, many people who drink also smoke cigarettes, and those who follow health-promoting dietary practices also tend to be physically active. People who are poor, have low levels of education, or are socially isolated are more likely to engage in a wide array of risk-related behaviors and less likely to engage in health-promoting ones.
Tobacco use has been proven to causes illnesses such as Cancer, Heart disease, Lung diseases (including emphysema, bronchitis, and chronic

...Competencies: Associate versus Baccalaureate Degree Nurses There are currently three different degree programs for Registered Nurses in the United States. The first degree plan is a diploma nursing degree, which is a 3 year program that focuses on nursing tasks in a hospital setting. It is noted that the diploma nursing program provides the most clock hours of clinical instruction (Hood, 2010, pg. 15). The second degree plan is the associate degree in nursing; this degree focuses on a combination of didactic and clinical skills over a 2 year period. The last degree is the baccalaureate degree in nursing which is a higher level of education in nursing; this includes additional courses in nursing research and community health projects. This paper will give an overview of the differences between the competencies of the associate degree plan versus the baccalaureate trained nurse in the patient care setting. Associate Degree in Nursing The associate degree was originally created to help with the nursing shortage after World War II. The first associate degree nursing program was started by Dr. Mildred Montag in 1952 (Potter & Perry, 2009, pg. 3). The associate degree in nursing is an attractive alternative for many people who decide to go to school to become a nurse. In recent years the ability to obtain a degree in a shorter amount of time and at a lesser cost than a 4 year university has become more advantageous to prospective students. With the evolve of the ADN Registered Nurse...

Bsn Reflection Paper

...To earn a BSN, the process approximately takes four years. In addition to general education courses, a student in this major will learn emergency care, health assessment, research and scholarship for evidence-based projects, issues and trends in nursing and so much more. Enrolling in a four-year BSN program is a serious commitment. While some students manage to work while in school, a nursing student is devoting a great amount of time to coursework and lab time so they must consider whether they can manage their schedule effectively. Some BSNs can be done on a hybrid program meaning that students can take some classes online. However, the practical lessons will most likely be scheduled at a local hospital or on campus. In summary, this major is not an easy one. A junior nursing student at Bowie state university had something to say on the difficulty of the nursing major, she said, “I didn’t expect nursing to be this hard. I thought nurses just nurtured patients. I didn’t know nursing involved all this science and learning about medication and basically having some of the same knowledge as a doctor”(Shonte)....

...Michele Wallace NRS-430V 7/8/2013 What factors need to be considered when determining whether or not identified actions are within the domain of nursing practice? Be sure to cite current literature in your response. When in doubt it is the nurses’ responsibility to make sure that she/he is staying within their scope of practice. When I am not sure of a task that is presented to me then my main resource is to check with the state board of nursing website for the definition of a registered nurse. Every state has their own definition of the scope of practice for each profession within nursing, they, for the most part are the same but may be worded differently. Once a student has passed his/that NCLEX-RN boards than he/she is accountable for knowing what his/her scope entails as to keep in within their scope. Also, we need to stay current in rules and practice in our field by joining associations that are nursing bases and complete CEU to keep us up to date on what is new and changing. All practice must be done with the safety and comprehensive care for our patient In the state of Arizona, it is stated as followed; “Registered nursing” includes the following: (a) Diagnosing and treating human responses to actual or potential health problems. (b) Assisting individuals and groups to maintain or attain optimal health by implementing a strategy of care to accomplish defined goals and evaluating responses to care and treatment. (c) Assessing the health status of individuals...

...Differences regarding competencies of an associate degree nurse and a baccalaureate degree nurse have long been discussed and argued. It has been argued that the associate degree nurse is less competent than the baccalaureate degree nurse. The difference among these competencies has also led to the discussion and concern regarding negative outcomes when it comes to quality patient care. “Quality patient care hinges on having a well educated work force” (Rosseter, 2011) With further research I have found that there are many differences in the competencies and educational preparation between these nurses. I was not aware of these differences until I further researched this topic. In the Journal of Nursing Education June 2006 issue it states “ developments in medical technology, the growing number of older adults and patients with chronic illnesses, and the demand for high quality nursing care have led to various, increasing complex , professional, legal, and educational issues within the nursing work place.” (Shin K , 2006) In the paragraphs to follow I will share my research findings. The Associate degree level of nursing was developed due to the shortage following World War II. It was developed as a temporary solution to a nursing shortage. It was created to replace the professional level of nursing education. This level of nursing education became popular and now is a chosen shortened and less expensive route to becoming a nurse. Associate degree programs focus on nursing...

Adn vs Bsn Paper

...Baccalaureate Level Education can be a factor in determining a person’s success and well-being. Does the difference in RN education play a role in well-being of those they care for? I will explain some educational differences between an Associate Degree Nurse (ADN) and a Baccalaureate of Science Nurse (BSN). Also, I will share a clinical case scenario to demonstrate the differences in approach, experience and skills effect clinical decisions made by a BSN and an ADN nurse. Associate Degree Nursing Education The ADN requires two or three years of college, whether at a community college or junior college. The graduate earns an Associates of Science in Nursing and is qualified to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) to become a licensed registered nurse (RN). The idea of the ADN was founded by Mildred Montag in 1952 due to the nursing shortage post World War II. Montag proposed a two-year program in junior or community colleges. Her intent was the ADN would be more educated than the untrained nurse, otherwise known as a practical nurse. The ADN would qualify to test for RN licensure and enter practice working under the supervision of a BSN nurse. Montag’s proposed framework and model was not executed completely. Instead institutions assigned roles and functions based on licensure and not education in effort to increase RN populations. Baccalaureate Degree Nursing Education The Baccalaureate of Science in nursing program began in the...

...writing. In fact, the three universities that I have attended in the past have all required me to use the APA style of writing. As I recall my high school years, the APA style of writing also seemed to be a favorite amongst my high school teachers. They all required that term papers be written in APA style as well. This type of writing actually does not differ much from the ones included in the text reading. The text mentioned the APA style of writing several times. In my opinion, it appears to be the most popular style of writing, especially amongst college students. Based on the results of the quizzes, my grammar skills were actually a little better than average. I actually had expected to do better, but I guess my grammar skills are not as good as I thought they were. In any event I feel very confident when it comes to spelling, as I have always been a great speller. Even in grade school, I was a good speller. I learned at a very young age to challenge myself when it comes to spelling. Challenging my-self in that area really paid off as I became older, as I’ve never had a problem with spelling. However, I feel that I need more help with run on sentences and with thought patterns. Though I proof read my paper several times, it’s hard for me to see that I have several run on sentences until after I get my grade back. In general, I feel that my writing is just mediocre. However, I also believe that when it comes to writing, I am my own worst critic. Reason being, I am never...

...Terrica Thomas Mr. David Makhanlall Eng 090 12-11-11 My journey as a writer is when I do my papers I have to make sure that I have the correct grammar and no misspelled words. Because when write you want to make sure that your papers flows and that you stay on topic. Because you as a writer wants the people to understand what they are reading. Because your paper have to have so meaning to it and it have to have some clarity to. When I revise my papers it make me look at the things I done wrong. Like when I have misspelled words I can correct them and when I have sentences that don’t make sense and I take the out. When I write I make the mistake of writing a lot of write on sentences. I have to make sure that I don’t do that anymore. I have to make sure that I don’t forget the punctuations because I have the habit of not putting them where they belong and stuff. When I was writing my paper on my mother I think that I did a good job but I think that I could have writing about her goals in life. What she has done with her life right now and what she wants to do right now. I could have talk a little more about what she has done for me when I was growing up. What she had to do to raise three girls on her own. The pattern of errors that I need to work on is run on sentences.
