BY: Gloria Hanna Abstract Previous studies have shown that weight stigma and bullying can have detrimental effects on a person’s psychological well-being. Depression, self-esteem, loneliness, and perceived stress were measured as a result of personal experiences with bullying, specifically concerning weight stigma and weight based bullying, in comparison to other forms of bullying (e.g., being shy, having freckles). University students self-reported about times when they experienced bullying using an online survey and also completed measures of current depression, self-esteem, loneliness, and perceived stress. Consistent differences in current psychological well-being were observed when comparing responses from students who had been bullied to those from students who had never been bullied. However, no significant differences were found when comparing students who reported being bullied for different reasons. These findings suggest that bullying for any reason can be detrimental to several aspects of young adults’ mental health, including depression, self-esteem, loneliness, and perceived stress. ...No Tolerance and No Bulling Policies: Why They Do Not Work "Zero Tolerance Policies" were first instated into schools, to enforce suspension and expulsion, in response to students; violating; weapons, drugs and violent act policies that were already in place. Shortly after, schools began to instate “No Bulling Policies” partly to a high suicide rate among teenagers due to bulling. The consequences for violating these policies can now go beyond expulsion, and have legal implications. In theory these policies are a great idea. Unfortunately, these policies are rarely implemented and carried out correctly, causing them to not just be ineffective; but causing them to have adverse effects. We have tried these policies in our schools , it has been proven that they have done more harm than good; it is now time to remove these policies from our schools. The “school to prison pipeline," is a recent national trend where children are pushed out of public schools, and into the juvenile and criminal justice systems. Many of these children have learning disabilities, histories of poverty, and histories of abuse and neglect. There students would benefit from additional educational and counseling services. It relates because in the story it talks a lot about bullying. Bully can become a really big impact even if it seems like it’s a joke and starts out small but turns into something big. It relates to me well because in some way everyone has probably encountered bulling and that there’s really only one small portion of the people who would stand up to bulling.
