The Definition of Bullying

...The Definition of Bullying Jonathan C Howell ITT Technical Institute October 7, 2015 The Definition of Bullying Bullying is when a person or persons uses words, emotions and/or actions to intentionally harm another person. News reports have reported that it is expanded to social media on the internet. It is all about intimidation or making the person feel inferior to another person. Defining bullying accurately is important. Bullying can be mistaken for other behavior. If it is a one-time event, do we punish that person? I think there must an established pattern of this behavior, before it is defined as bullying. Because a person has a bad day, that is not bullying. We must be cautious moving toward defining bullying. I think it is important to examine the root cause of bullying; then we are better equipped to treat the offenders. Punishment should fit the crime. I believe that prison is not the answer. Prison doesn’t correct the problem, it only exacerbates the behavior. By sending a person to prison affects that person, their family and the person bullied. Only one person benefits, the person that was bullied. The military generally retrains offenders; they are provided an opportunity to correct bad behavior. My understanding of the definition of bullying has changed. As I got older, with children of my own, I know that bullying comes in a variety of forms. My definition is very specific because I am able to identify the behavior. I feel it’s our responsibility...

...Bullying is a Crime If the saying, “if sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me” was ever true, it sure isn't true today. Bullying in and out of schools is getting out of control. People are starting to worry if the suicide rate is increasing due to bullying. Children are not the only ones being bullied today; adults are also victims in the bullying epidemic. Statistics have shown that one third of teens are bullied at school and 4 percent also report that they were also victims of cyber bullying (Tangen and Campbell). Parents and teachers should take a stand against bullying to become a part in preventing it. Parents and teachers need to be a part of the solution, not the problem. Victims of bullying are caused much damage and some are scarred for life. Bullying should not be tolerated because it can cause emotional, physical, or social damage to a victim, which can lead to dangerous consequences. What we don’t realize is that there are limited laws and/or policies in place that stop bullying from happening. Legislation needs to be updated or changed to accommodate to new bullying tactics such as cyber bullying and the consequences need to be more severe to stop bullying from happening ever again. Bullying is widespread and perhaps the most underreported safety problem on American school campuses. Contrary to popular belief, bullying occurs more often during school hours than on the way to and from school. But what is bullying? To me bullying...

Management

...work-place bullying takes place in an organization, it is because leadership and management of the organization allow it to happen. Do you agree? Introduction Bullying in the workplace has been defined as “harassing, offending, socially excluding someone or negatively affecting someone’s work tasks...repeatedly and regularly,” (Einarsen, 2003). By this we understand that bullying is a process that stems from a series of actions foregone. The forms of bullying which take place in an organisation are vast and range from verbal abuse to violence to sexual discrimination and harassment. While occurrences of bullying arise because management allow them to, literature suggests that there are various other factors which lead to it. The following sections attempt to explore these determinants. There is much evidence to suggest that workplace bullying is encouraged by management (O’Connell et al, 2007) and other evidence that suggests the opposite view (Einsaren, 2003). I will determine that one of the main responsibilities lies with management, but that other factors such as personalities, workplace ethic, policies, working culture, organizational behaviour and industrial nature have their own roles to play. Through my research I established that a knock-on effect exists within the concepts produced in the literature. We must firstly look at definitions of bullying and conflict to establish why it occurs from reviews of literature. Definition The ESRI describe bullying as “undermining...
