Our increasingly connected world has created another platform for bullies to harass their victims. Cyber bullying is bullying that takes place by the use of electronic technology with communications tools such as social media sites, text messages, chat, and websites. Bullying is no longer limited to the real world, as technology has quickly advanced. Sadly, the internet technologies of today easily allows for bullies to deliberately and repeatedly harm or exhibit hostility towards a particular person or group. Today, many children become technology friendly at an early age. With the growing popularity of social media, cyber bullying is becoming equally widespread. While bullying in the real word involves verbal abuse and/or physical altercations, the bullying in cyber space goes far beyond. The harassment, humiliation, and threats delivered by technology can argumentatively be much worse. The facts of cyber bullying were quite surprising; with 43% of kids reporting that they have been bullied online. Of those, 1 in 4 say that is has happened more than once. Over 80% of the younger generation believes that bullying online is easier to get away with rather than in person. This could have something to do with the fact that only 1 in 10 victims will inform a parent or other trusted adult of the abuse that are enduring. In addition, victims of bullying are 2 to 9 times more likely to consider committing suicide. Of all of the facts, the one thing that I found most surprising is that over 75% of students admit that they have bullied another by bashing them by some form of internet technology. Cyber bulling is much more intimidating because the bullying can happen 24 hours a day, 7 days a week because it is not necessary for both the bully and victim to be physically present. Anonymous distribution of post can quickly reach a wide audience making it more threating

Effects of Social Media on Bullying

...How is the advancement in technology, especially cell phones and social networking affecting how our society communicates and interacts with each other? How are teenagers using these advances for the worse and bullying their peers to the point they even commit suicide, and what is being done to stop this? The use of mobile phones has become a gift and a curse for society. We no longer experience a face to face conversation with people, but rather send a text or call them up. This issue is even to the point that parents text their children while they are only one flight of stairs away. The use of anonymous posting through social network sites such as facebook or myspace, or through cell phones makes it easier for teens to bully others without feeling remorse. Why are we letting ourselves become this type of society? In a recent study done by UCLA psychologist, it was reported that three in four teens had been bullied through some sort of cyber resource.(UCLA newsroom). If we can find a solution to why this is happening, we can help teens be more confident and help protect them from cyber bullying. A recent study in Manchester, England shows that bullying via mobiles was also a concern for over two-thirds of young people, who had either received an unpleasant call or text message, or have been the victim of phone pranks, or knew someone that had experienced this. For example: An eleven year old female from Hampshire states, “Somebody got my number and was making mean comments...

...researched the different types of bullying, it informed me that bullying is more than what the eye sees, throughout most of my film production there is bullying featured. For this investigation I analysed three pieces of text, two newspaper articles and one movie. What I discovered was that most representations of bullying are verbal, physical and physiological bullying. However there are some exceptions to this in the film catfish where most of the interactions are done through social media. I research a lot of ways of how bullying is acted around us for example verbal, physical and physiological bullying are the main types. To display what I have learnt and show my knowledge of representations in the media of bullying I decided to produce a short film to show different aspects of bullying, using my investigation to help me to conform to the typical representations of bullying in this day and age. I took inspiration from different anti-bullying campaigns videos and pictures on the internet where the bully is shown to be bigger and stronger than the victim; therefore I took the same approach to my short film that I produced. I used the different types of bullying within my film with the bully shown to be angry and telling the victim what to do then the bully follows the victim around and eventually leading to the bully using physical actions to hurt the victim. In many of the different video’s I viewed on various websites they were all trying to tackle bullying many within the children...

...Enjoy Social Media? Cyberbullies Do Douglas Spencer Hawaii Pacific University Writing 1200 David Falgout September 30, 2015 Enjoy Social Media? Cyberbullies Do There is increasing evidence that the Internet and social media can influence suicide-related behavior. The word “bully” can be traced back as far as the 1530s (Harper, 2015). The term “bully,” in it’s most basic logic, consist of two people, a bully and a victim. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention ("Bullying," 2015, p. 2), defines bullying as unwanted, aggressive behavior among school-aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group or purpose. Bullying can occur in-person or through technology. Children are being exposed to social media and the Internet at an earlier age than ever before. Can being exposed at such an early age be the cause of cyberbullying? Since we are becoming a strictly technology centered lifestyle, young people are using social media technology, including cell phones, text messaging, and the Internet, to communicate with others in the United States and throughout the world at an earlier age than ever before. Chat rooms and instant messaging through AOL was a new form of communication when I was graduating high school. Today there are multiple forms of social media. You can tweet, post, or pin just about anything. You can reconnect with old friends, or make new friends. Small businesses are becoming much more mainstream, by taking advantage of online markets with the help of social media. If you can be found on Google you can be limitless. Social media is something I never heard of until well after high school. I graduated in 2002 and bullying at my high school was done face to face instead of on the internet. Media and Its Responsibilities

...Mass Media: A platform to give strength to the weak or a loaded gun in the hands of humanity? “The media’s the most powerful entity on earth…because they control the minds of the masses” (Malcom X, 2012). Media has responsibilities and these responsibilities need to be clarified and upheld by society. Unfortunately, media today does not abide by moral standards, which in turn sends mixed messages to our society. Often times these messages are demoralizing, desensitizing, and false. Young people and adults alike are trying to navigate through their lives and through the world with a broken compass. The role media plays in issues such as self-worth, bullying, and suicide need to be addressed and revised. I will discuss media and its role and responsibility through the perspective of both a classical and contemporary ethical theory. The classical theory that will be discussed is virtue ethics, which is the study of the virtuous character of a person (Mosser, 2010, p.1.7). The contemporary theory that will be discussed is emotivism, which is basing one’s moral decisions on one’s feelings and emotions (Mosser, 2010, p.1.8). Concluding, I will discuss which theory is closer to my own personal view and why I chose that particular theory. While freedom of speech and personal connection are very important, age appropriate moral standards should be upheld in the media because media plays a significant role in suicide, bullying, and self-worth. According to Mosser (2010)...

...Social Media: Freedom of Expression or Freedom to Bully? Social media has come a long way during the last few decade, and the improvement of technology has made everything online easier to manage. Social media is meant as a valuable outlet for freedom of expression, but is widely abused in order to bully and threaten others without any fear. The purpose of this research paper is to show how online bullying goes a long way, and hurts others in the long run. Bullies get online and let out their hatred/frustration on victims, without the confrontation, and without the immediate consequences. There are many ways that social media is more widely used as a weapon and some of the reasons are, bullying online can lead to depression/anxiety, even to suicide, and the bullies are able to hide behind a keyboard and threaten others with no consequences. We expect the internet to be safe and a reliable source to express ourselves, yet others use it as a scapegoat to bully others and create an environment where others don’t feel safe. From personal experiences, facts, statistics, and the words of experts, social media has been deemed an unfit outlet for teens because they use it to freely express their hatred towards others, with little to no consequence. There are many facts that prove how social media is used for seemingly inappropriate behavior towards others, and making the internet as a whole a place to ruin other people’s lives. Doing research on this topic was really...
