From the day that Mr. Goodnight started the company SAS, he had a great outlook on how to motivate his employees. According to the text (Hellreigel & Slocum Pg. 188) he stated that, “If you treat employees as if they make a difference in the company, they will make a difference in the company”. Motivation is explained as it “represents the force acting on or within a person that causes the person to behave in a specific, goal-directed manner” (Hellreigel & Slocum Pg. 158). There are a few things that motivation processes can produce the qualities within an employee. The motivation process at SAS has three things that have motivated their employees. (Hellreigel & Slocum Pg. 188
1. The company always had the atmosphere in a relaxed state. There wasn’t stress on the employees which made them produce more work.
2. Instead of giving the employees company stock and large increase in salary like their competitors. SAS gave their employee as much sick leave as they needed, even sick leave to take care of an ill family member.
3. There is a balance between work and family life. SAS has the largest on-site day-care operation in North Carolina. They encourage families to eat dinner together, so that company adopted a 7 hour work that that all employees could be out of the office by 5pm every day.
Because the motivational level is so good at SAS their turnover rate is very low, this saved the company a lot of money to search for new employees. Mr. Goodnight also motivated all the managers to get our on the floor and work that the rest of the employees. That gave the managers a better view of what was need to keep their employee there verses them going to the competitors.
