ashinsky: I think Apple will change. It will have to change if for no other reason than because it is so much bigger and so much more complex than it was 15 years ago when Steve Jobs came back to the company that he had co-founded. Should it change? Sure. They will have to adapt to a new reality of being big, of having more scrutiny. For example, their secrecy will become more and more difficult over time, and I suspect they will try an intelligent approach to adapting to that difficulty rather than just trying to hold things off as long as possible.

Knowledge@Wharton: We'll come back in a bit to the issue of secrecy about which I have a few questions. But for now, why don't we talk about Tim Cook and his leadership style? Do you have a sense of how Cook is putting his stamp on Apple and how he should, in some ways, think differently by not emulating Jobs in everything he does?

Lashinsky: One thing that Cook has going for him is that he is not Steve Jobs, and my impression of the man is that he is not confused at all about this. He is extremely different from Jobs in almost every way. He is not an emotional person. He doesn't have a creative or artistic background the way Jobs did. He's passionate about Apple, he's passionate about business, he's passionate about operational excellence. I think eventually he will put his stamp on Apple, in that it will be more professional,

...Apple Business Model Mini Case Assignment QUESTIONS: 1. In your own words, explain why the author refers to Apple's business model as a roach motel. The author refers to Apple’s business model as a roach motel partly because of the old Raid commercial where the narrator says, “roaches check in, but they can’t check out.” When a customer begins using Apple products, they are set up in a web of content and applications. Every time they download an app, they are committing to the same type of system, or ecosystem, if you will. That makes it very difficult for a customer to switch to something different. When a customer gets used to a certain way of doing things, they are less likely to switch to another way. People generally don’t like change and once they get used to something, they like to stay with it. 2. In 25 words or less, and in your own words, summarize the author's prediction about Apple's future success. Apple’s margins may start to fall sharply but that doesn’t mean they won’t be successful. Bet on Microsoft to put their hat into the ring. 3. Based on the factors discussed in the article (e.g., the rise of HTML5), are future prospects brighter for Apple or Google? Defend your answer. Prospects are brighter for Google, simply because there is more areas in which to grow. The rise of HTML5 makes it less expensive for Google to operate the same principles and that is where they will take advantage. Consumers are looking for lower prices and better deals. Apple...

In addition to eliminating toxins and designing products with highly recyclable aluminum enclosures, Apple works with environmentally conscious materials including recycled plastics, recycled paper, biopolymers, and vegetable-based inks. We have also found ways to reengineer secondary materials to the high standard of our designs. For example, our fan assemblies in Mac Pro use advanced materials derived from repolymerized plastic bottles. Speaker assemblies and internal brackets in the Apple Thunderbolt Display are made from recycled PC-ABS. In 2012, our latest achievements included the AirPort Express enclosure, which includes biopolymers derived from industrial-grade rapeseed and recycled PC-ABS. And the aluminum stand on the iMac is made using 30 percent recycled content. Our packaging designs for many products use pulp fiber from post-consumer paper streams, and we use vegetable-based inks for in-box materials. This business venture brought tremendous profits to Apple as a company and the music sector. This success has been maintained by the launch of Apple TV and iPhone in the year 2007.
