Mark Jones, a Production Manager, has been transferred from the manufacturing plant in his hometown of Chicago to his company's overseas manufacturing plant in Osaka, Japan.
You are the company's I-O psychologist. Using Hofstede's Five Basic Elements of Culture Distinction, write an e-mail message to the Vice President (VP) of Production discussing at least three cultural differences that Mark will experience in managing front-line plant workers in Japan in contrast to in the United States. Dear VP of Production,

Upon the transfer of Mark Jones, there are several things to consider so that a smooth transfer to Osaka, Japan will occur and that he will be able to familiarize himself with the new country, culture, and work processes. When moving to a complete different culture and society, there are things to consider, and according to Hofestede’s five basic elements of culture distinction, there are techniques to learn so that a quick transition will happen. These five elements are power distance, individualism, masculinity, uncertainty avoidance, and long term orientation. First, Mark should understand the idea of power distance. This is described as the degree of inequality that exists, and is accepted, among people with and without power. Second, the idea of Individualism should be looked upon.
