Ten things we learned this weekend: Kieran Gibbs has England potential, Steven Gerrard is still a force, and losing to Bournemouth is a dangerous game

Ralph Ellis runs you through what we learned from the weekend's football... with some star turns and a look through the leagues, too. This week sees an Arsenal full-back and an England legend impress, while the opening day of the Football League season provides plenty of thrills.

1. Kieran Gibbs was a fixture in Arsenal's defence for most of last season and also played in the Champions League, but fell behind teenager Luke Shaw and veteran Leighton Baines when Roy Hodgson picked his World Cup squad.

The 25-year-old, who won the last of three England caps as a second half sub against Germany in November 2013, is clearly out to jump up the queue.

He was excellent for Arsenal in the Community Shield win over Manchester City – finding a team mate with 32 of 34 passes, more than half of which were in the attacking half of the field.

2. Steven Gerrard might have had a bad World Cup but his commitment to his beloved Liverpool burns as fierce as ever.

At 34 he was one of only four outfield players to go through all 90 minutes of yesterday's 4-0 friendly win over German giants Borussia Dortmund.

VIDEO Liverpool everything to Gerrard - Rodgers

For good measure Gerrard, who was also excellent for boss Brendan Rodgers on the club's tour of America, supplied the corner from which Dejan Lovren scored, as well as having a trademark free kick just tipped over the bar.

3. Lewis Holtby never played 90 minutes of a Premier League game for Tottenham last season and was in and out of Fulham's side too under Felix Magath, who branded him 'not a fighter' towards the end of a loan spell there.

Back in the side: Lewis Holtby has struggled to make an impact at White Hart Lane so far

Webb flattened by Lewis Holtby sliding tackle in testimonial

Back at White Hart Lane with three years of his contract left, the 23-year-old might just have a fresh chance under new boss Mauricio Pochettino.

The German-born son of an English RAF officer played all of Saturday evening's friendly win over his old club Schalke.

4. BBC pundit Steve Claridge will absolutely love Aston Villa's promising teenager Jack Grealish if the 18-year-old forces his way into the Premier League.

Grealish, who had a Villa Park season ticket alongside his dad at the age of four, wears his socks rolled down above ultra light shin pads in just the way Claridge used to do in his heyday for Leicester.

He's clearly not scared of getting kicked, either. The Republic of Ireland youth midfielder gave a dazzling display of mazy dribbling after coming on for the last 25 minutes of Villa's 0-0 friendly draw with Italian side Parma.

Old school: Jack Grealish looked the part and showed he has the potential to make an impact this season

5. The Premier League will hog the headlines from next week, so credit the 72 Football League clubs with doing their best to serve up some entertainment while they could take some of the spotlight.

Starting from Blackburn's 1-1 draw against Cardiff on Friday night, and rounding up with Wolves' 1-0 win over Norwich, not a single one of the 36 fixtures finished as a 0-0 draw.

Even in the Conference it was a good day– only favourites Bristol Rovers at home to Grimsby and Lincoln's clash with Kidderminster ended goalless.

6. Heurelho Gomes marked his first appearance in an English League game for more than three years by keeping a clean sheet for Watford as they beat Bolton 3-0.

The Brazilian who helped Harry Redknapp's Tottenham side reach the Champions League quarter-finals in 2011 has moved there on a free transfer after three frustrating seasons at White Hart Lane where he mostly didn't even sit on the bench behind Hugo Lloris and Brad Friedel.

Now 33, he could turn out to be as important a signing for the Hornets as the return of goalscorer Matej Vydra.

7. Games against Bournemouth should carry a health warning for managers in the Championship.

Mark Robins, who lost his job at Huddersfield yesterday after a 4-0 thrashing at home to the Cherries, is not the first boss to suffer as an owner wonders why Eddie Howe can produce such a fluent side at such a historically tiny club.

On his way: Mark Robins became the first managerial casualty of the season after the 4-0 defeat
+13

Michael Appleton's reign at Blackburn last season also ended just days after being beaten at home by Bournemouth.

8. Wolves manager Kenny Jackett made only two signings in the summer to strengthen his squad for promotion – but they look like good ones.

Dutch winger Rajiv van La Parra, who came on a Bosman free transfer from Heerenveen, gave Martin Olsson such a chasing that the full back got sent off for two fouls.

Then the 23-year-old supplied the cross from which Dave Edwards headed the winner.

Good start: Rajiv van La Parra had a debut to remember, resulting in a red card for Martin Olsson

9. Who said you never win anything with kids? Swindon had three teenagers in the side that thumped Scunthorpe 3-1 and an average age of just 21 in the starting line-up.

Homegrown defender Nathan Thompson – who has been watched by Arsenal, Spurs and Everton – was the oldest outfield player at 23 years and three months.

The nearest boss Mark Cooper had to a veteran was goalkeeper Wes Foderingham – 98 days older than Thompson. Substitute Andy Williams, who is 28 on Thursday, must have felt like an old man.

10. Paul Tisdale lags only behind Arsene Wenger as the game's second longest serving manager in League football after seven years in charge of Exeter.

The 41-year-old might be after another record as the game's oldest player-manager.

He had to name himself on the bench for the 1-1 draw with Portsmouth because his squad is so thin.

Keeping his kit on: He may have been in management for seven years but Tisdale still put himself on the bench

Gibbs has got champion's league experience, unlike Baines and Shaw. Technically he is better than Baines and Shaw. Still shocked that he was not included in the World Cup squad.

Exactly!!!!! Now that Cole has retired and Hodgson didn't bother taking him to the world cup, Gibbs is Englands most experienced and best left back. When he got overlooked for a place in the team over Bertrand not too long ago i lost hope. This kid deserves to be first choice

...The Business Enterprise 1.) Discuss the common elements described in the theories/philosophies of Case, Kouzes, and Drucker including how their principles/strategies relate to the new definition of entrepreneurial leadership presented in Understanding Entrepreneurial Leadership in today’s Dynamic Markets. Case, Kouzes and Drucker each have good theories and philosophies on entrepreneurship and leadership. Each had different ways of stating what they thought made a good entrepreneur but for the most part focus on some of the same things and agreed that with the right balance of these characteristics then succeeding, as an entrepreneur would be possible. One of the common elements that each focused on was people. Interaction with people is important when it comes to entrepreneurship and leadership skills according to Case, Kouzes, and Drucker. A weekly or monthly newsletter to your prospects or established customers will help build trust by providing helpful tips and information. Occasionally sending out a direct mail or email survey will help you get to know your customers and better fill their needs. Freely sharing your expertise and gathering feedback from your customers will help you build a strong relationship with your customer base, and establish your company as a trusted expert in your industry. The business owner must record all of the money coming into the business from successful sales of the product and all of the money going out, such as expenses including money owed for storage, wages that are paid and money to purchase the stock. If a business fails to do this it may find itself not chasing payments, forgetting to pay bills or, even in trouble with HM Revenue and Customs. If the business does not record its transactions correctly, it cannot report its financial performance accurately and therefore tax payments may be wrong. By recording the sales made, the business owner is given a clear indication of what’s popular and so it becomes clear what products should have increased stock or altered price. In your case, it is very important that you monitor your sales as a new business will most likely not make any profit straight away, so it’s vital to record your transactions so you are able to at least breakeven until more customers become aware of your business and you can start to make a profit. A for-profit organization will produce goods or services in the hopes of making revenue off its products. Most organizations you think of today are probably a for-profit establishment.
