The Republic of Cabo Verde
Cape Verde, also known as Cabo Verde, and officially the Republic of Cabo Verde, is an island country spanning an archipelago of ten volcanic islands in the central Atlantic Ocean. It is located roughly 350 miles off the coast of Western Africa; the islands cover a combined area of slightly over 1,500 square miles. Portuguese explorers discovered and colonized the uninhabited islands, and it became the first European settlement in the tropics. It is located in an area that held the possibility of allowing the land for use in the Atlantic slave trade. The islands began to grow prosperous and often attracted privateers and pirates. Charles Darwin also visited the islands …show more content…
Cape Verde's economic growth and improvement in living conditions despite a lack of natural resources has earned international recognition, with other countries and international organizations often providing development aid. Since 2007, Cape Verde has been classified as a developing nation, and on June 23, 2008 Cape Verde became the 153rd member of the WTO.
Cape Verde has few natural resources. Only five of the ten main islands normally support significant agricultural production (which contribution is minimal, as discussed earlier) and most of all food consumed in Cape Verde is imported. Mineral resources include salt, pozzolana, and limestone. Their small numbers of wineries making Portuguese-style wines has traditionally focused on the domestic market, but have recently met with some international acclaim.
The country earns approximately $50 million (USD) from exports, and spends about $85 million (USD) in imports. The trade gap is funded equally from foreign aid and emigrants’ …show more content…
Tourism is so important to the nation that five airports have been built since 2005, and tourist numbers have reached 300,000 per year. Many in the government believe that the islands will attract one million visitors by the year 2020. However, tourism is a highly volatile industry, with major competition, which makes it very fragile. Knowing this, the government is looking into economic alternatives. The best alternative to date is for the islands to become a regional hub for transport, maritime, financial, and IT services. In the late 1970s and 1980s, most African countries prohibited South African Airways from over-flights but Cape Verde allowed them and became a center of activity for the airline's flights to Europe and the United States. This was the beginning of the nation’s quest to reach beyond the tourism industry.
Gender Relations One of the biggest issues in Cape Verde is the relationship between the genders. The constitution is clear on gender equality, but sexism still exists in the country. Wives are beaten on a regular basis; the exploitation of young teenage girls by older men is defended by families as economic security, rather than a crime. Many women accept violence with the thought that it could be worse. Along with violence against women, the workplace is a place full of discrimination, and gender stereotyping of

The Study of Language

...This page intentionally left blank The Study of Language This best-selling textbook provides an engaging and user-friendly introduction to the study of language. Assuming no prior knowledge of the subject, Yule presents information in short, bite-sized sections, introducing the major concepts in language study – from how children learn language to why men and women speak differently, through all the key elements of language. This fourth edition has been revised and updated with twenty new sections, covering new accounts of language origins, the key properties of language, text messaging, kinship terms and more than twenty new word etymologies. To increase student engagement with the text, Yule has also included more than fifty new tasks, including thirty involving data analysis, enabling students to apply what they have learned. The online study guide offers students further resources when working on the tasks, while encouraging lively and proactive learning. This is the most fundamental and easy-to-use introduction to the study of language. George Yule has taught Linguistics at the Universities of Edinburgh, Hawai’i, Louisiana State and Minnesota. He is the author of a number of books, including Discourse Analysis (with Gillian Brown, 1983) and Pragmatics (1996). “A genuinely introductory linguistics text, well suited for undergraduates who have little prior experience thinking descriptively about language.
