...To what extent is Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) beneficial to a company’s performance? CSR—A double-edged sword for company’s performance Starting from the refined corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategies issued by the European Commission in 2011, a stinging debate is being aroused on the influence of CSR to the whole society. The most influential critic is Noble Prize winner Milton Friedman, who regards CSR as a waste of stockholders’ money (1970). However, many other articles claim, opposite Friedman, that CSR actually improves companies’ financial performance in the long run (Bagnoli and Watts, 2003; McWilliams and Siegel, 2001). There are plenty of arguments on CSR’s influence on company’s performance. As far as I am concerned, CSR plays as a double-edged sword in company performance. The definition of CSR is quite easy to understand. According to Business for Social Responsibility (BSR), CSR is defined as “achieving commercial success in ways that honor ethical values and respect people, communities, and the natural environment.” McWilliams and Siegel (2001:117) describe CSR as “actions that appear to further some social good, beyond the interest of the firm and that which is required by law.” These suggest that a socially responsible corporation should take a step forward and adopt strategies and business practices that go beyond the profit requirements and contribute to some social-friendly activities. However, when companies choose to engage in CSR...

Anti Gallic Traditions

...The customs and habits of Gallic traditions were an interesting one, especially when looking at the dowry system and their marriage practices. The women in society were at the bottom of the social hierarchy, and their status was similar to those of slaves and animals. Women had no rights and were bounded to their husbands, and given off during marriage as property. Caesar explains that the husbands had complete control over their wives’ life, and it was up to their jurisdiction about how long they lived for. In The Gallic Wars, he states, “Husbands have power of life and death over their wives as well as over their children” (Caes. 19). Caesar explains that a woman’s life was dependent on her husband’s life, both physically and metaphorically....

Complaint Letter

...November 30, 2002. For the urgent attention of: Mr. Darren Crone Sales Manager Soft Drink Unlimited 1834 Orange Street Downtown, Kingston. Dear Mr. Crone: NON-DELIVERY OF ORDER TS6813: FIFTY CAES OF SCHWEPPES SOFT DRINK On November 10, 2002 my company placed an emailed order with you for fifty (50) Shweppes Soft Drink, specifying forty (40) 2L cases and ten (10) 5L cases. The email included details of required delivery dates arising from the approaching Christmas season in order to cater to our loyal, repeating-purchasing customers. Your email reply confirmed our order and indicated that there would be no problems in meeting the specified delivery dates. Additionally the email also stated that the sizes of the ordered soft drinks were available to the request of our customers. I also phoned the company at the beginning of the week and I was assured that the supplies would be delivered, consequently this did not happen. I am therefore extremely concerned that the commitments which B.F. Ltd has given to valued customers can not be met because of your company’s failure to deliver the fifty (50) Schweppes Soft Drinks as guaranteed. Currently the sales staffs of my company are under intense pressure from customers who are involved, who are now threatening to withdraw their order worth a total of $100,500. As a result my company simply cannot afford to risk not doing business with such valuable customers, therefore am asking you to intervene personally in...

Among some problems that have to be taken into consideration is the demand, space, how much land it will take to build a power station, cost, the amount of power generated, how it will affect the landscape and the environment, should it be done in a large scale or a small scale and much more. Another problem is that renewable energy are not always usable, for example solar energy which only generates energy when there is sunlight and wind turbine which provides energy only when there is wind. These energy sources are intermittent. It has been suggested that they should be stored in batteries, pump storage hydro, compressed air energy storage (CAES) or any other storage systems. He also stated a few non-traditional players in the smart grid introduction. Such bodies are CISCO, GE, IBM and Siemens. 14 Points

...Deming's 14 points W Edwards Deming was an American statistician who was credited with the rise of Japan as a manufacturing nation, and with the invention of Total Quality Management (TQM). Deming went to Japan just after the War to help set up a census of the Japanese population. While he was there, he taught 'statistical process control' to Japanese engineers - a set of techniques which allowed them to manufacture high-quality goods without expensive machinery. In 1960 he was awarded a medal by the Japanese Emperor for his services to that country's industry. Deming returned to the US and spent some years in obscurity before the publication of his book "Out of the crisis" in 1982. In this book, Deming set out 14 points which, if applied to US manufacturing industry, would he believed, save the US from industrial doom at the hands of the Japanese. Although Deming does not use the term Total Quality Management in his book, it is credited with launching the movement. Most of the central ideas of TQM are contained in "Out of the crisis". Dr.Deming's famous 14 Points, originally presented in Out of the Crisis, serve as management guidelines. The points cultivate a fertile soil in which a more efficient workplace, higher profits, and increased productivity may grow. 1. Create and communicate to all employees a statement of the aims and purposes of the company. 2. Adapt to the new philosophy of the day; industries and economics are always changing. 3. Build quality...

Night Vision

...Night Vision COMM215 July 28, 2014 David Mumford Night Vision It's four forty-one in the morning, and the room is pitch black dark and the only light illuminating in the room is from the clock. You feel an additional presence in the room. You look back and forth trying to get your eyes to adjust in the darkness, and you realize there is a person in the room with you. Standing over you dressed in full military fatigues is your husband fresh from the most recent deployment and this time he has a loaded .357 in his hand. With all the horrifying and traumatic events that our soldiers encounter and experience overseas fighting for our country it raises the question: Is it really okay to be sending our soldiers straight home and attempt to return them to normal lives with their families without any post-war therapy? Although some people may object and claim that soldiers are doing just fine, and there's no reason to worry about them, soldiers should complete therapy before returning into normal life for the simple reason that some soldiers are not able to snap out of "War Mode" and think that everyone in their lives is the enemy including their loved ones. We will discuss the importance of getting the required treatment. “Post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD is defined as an anxiety disorder that can develop after expose to a terrifying event or ordeal in which severe physical harm occurred or was threatened. Accounting Standards Boards Paper

...Accounting Standards Boards Paper Accounting Standards Boards Paper This paper will discuss the relationship of the two accounting boards, International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) and the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB). Both groups are working on a venture known as the convergent project. The convergent project is an attempt by the IASB and FASB to eliminate differences between the International Financial Reporting Standards and the US GAAP. This paper will also explain how the MSA program will help students to prepare for a career in the accounting field. The Security Exchange Commission (SEC) was established by the Security Exchange Act in 1934. The SEC is the authority to establish financial accounting standards for publically held companies in the United States. The FASB was established in 1973 as the official body charged with issuing accounting standards. It is a private organization and is documented by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants as well as the SEC. The mission of the FASB “is to establish and improve standards of financial accounting and reporting” (FASB.ORG, 2014). The FASB also oversees that reporting from publically held companies provide useful information investors, auditors and creditors, as well as anyone else who needs the information. The FASB issues Financial Accounting Standards (FAS) and other accounting pronouncements that make up the Generally Accepted Accounting Procedure. The GAAP is...
