Calcutta’s Metro The major problem facing Project Managers is providing a clear and concise vision of the project details, who’s responsible for what and the initial budget. Without this the project has little or no chance to succeed. With a proper scope statement a project has the foundation for success.
In the case of Calcutta’s Metro I believe the major problem was that the Project Manager (PM) didn’t effectively manage the project scope. A project scope according to Pinto is “everything about a project – work content as well as expected outcomes” . Since an effective project scope was not developed the project had multiple problems such as funding, construction plan, site ownership, pressure for stakeholders, and traffic flow just to name a few. The majority of the short term problems like traffic flow and pressure from stakeholders led to the long term problem of been over budget and time. Project Scope Management contains the following; conceptual development, scope statement, work authorization, scope reporting, control systems, and project closeout . Any one of these elements if properly managed and executed would have help with the success of the project. During the conceptual development the project team would have used brainstorming events that would have identified any problems to considered and plan for. With a scope statement the project team would have had a clean picture of what the project was, initial budget and responsibilities. The PM could have used work authorization to ensure that the contractual requirements and terms are known. Scope reporting would have updated the scope with any changes during the project. With proper control systems where in place the PM would have known when the project was going to be off schedule and budget. The element of project scope management that I would have focused on was the scope

...The Origin of the Vampire Vampires, are they a mythical creature that was created by superstition and folklore or did they begin from someone’s fantastic imagination based on a real live person? Or maybe it was created to explain a cluster of misunderstood medical conditions that began before the medical world had advanced science and knowledge on the body and its psyche. It’s a word that inspires awe, fear, and romanticism all at once. Vampires are known in every culture and have been kept alive through stories that have been told throughout the generations. When someone utters the word “vampire” most people’s mind jump to Dracula from the great love story written by Bram Stoker. Dracula was created because Stoker was inspired by a real live man, the infamous, Vlad Tepes from Romania. That story is where love and vampires were intertwined and a kind of admiration was born. Only till recently they have become these seductive beautiful men and women in movies like ‘Twilight’ and ‘The Lost Boys’. So we are going to embark on the journey of where vampires began and explore the different aspects and origins of vampires. How these creatures were created was recorded in European folklore, Greek Mythology, found in medical conditions, and even taken from an excluded book of the bible. What is a vampire? Where did they come from? Well to get some answers we must first start at the beginning. First we must look at the word vampire. It is also spelled “vampir” or “vampyre”...

...Government of Kerala assigned the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) the task of preparing the detailed project report (DPR) for the Kochi Metro rail project. It was expected to start by 2006 and complete by 2010. But the project was delayed because the Central Government expressed serious doubts about the economic viability of the project.[9] The Kerala government had sought the Centre's assistance for the project to be built on the lines of the Delhi Metro project in terms of funding. The Centre refused this request.[10] The Union Government was in favour of implementing the project in public–private partnership (PPP) on the build-operate-transfer model,[11] ruling out its own financial involvement. The Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD) and the Planning Commission were also against government investment in the project, and refused to accept it as a project in line with the Delhi and Chennai metros. The political rivalry between the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government in Kerala and the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the Centre was a major reason for such developments and the slow down in the project.[12] The LDF wanted it to be in public sector, which was not accepted by the Central Government. The victory of the United Democratic Front (UDF) in the 2011 Kerala legislative assembly elections, changed the scenario in the state[13] and it was decided that the Kochi Metro would follow the Chennai Metro and Delhi Metro models, and would be implemented on a joint...

...AP lit MR Rich Yibo zhao The Birthday Party Free write The first time I read this story I was lost about the development of plot. I thought it should be a happy ending when I finished reading the beginning part of this essay , however it wasn't . I didn't realize this until I read it times by times. I think "Birthday Party" reveals how unpleasant a marriage can be even more worse when spouses are lack of thought and there was some hints in the essay. The man is plain looking, almost no special exterior, except for author's hint that he has a "self-satisfied face" (Line 3)---he is pretty confident about himself, but even more importantly with where he stands as man of the family. And also author ironically reveals that it is the husband's birthday and that the wife has pulled together a "little surprise" (line 6) for him, demeaning the wife's plans by calling them little. From these two hint I started to understand why this story did not have a happy ending. The description of the next scene explores the difference between the wife's behavior and her husband's. The wife has a certain amount of youthful spirit to her---like a child, she still feels happy about planing a surprise and keeping the secret. However, it is hard for the husband to consider the "small but glossy birthday cake" (line 7) as cute or loveable. Maybe the single candle on the tiny cake is representative of the couple's romance, but instead of lighting with passion and intensity, the candle...

The Representation of Women in Snow White, Sonnet 130 and the Rape of the Lock

...The representation of females in literary Works is a polemical issue. They have often been associated with a misogynistic stereotype. I have chosen three literary texts to compare the descriptions of women; “Snow White”, “Sonnet 130” by William Shakespeare and “The Rape of the Lock” by Alexander Pope. This will draw attention to the way that women are often portrayed as we see the common ingredients in their descriptions, as well as any potential differences between them. In both “Snow White” and “The Rape of the Lock” women are portrayed as vain and obsessed with their beauty. The speaker in “The Rape of the Lock” condemns the girl described, Belinda, for her obsession with appearances by mocking her through the use of hyperbole, for example calling her a “Goddess” (line 132). He writes about her in heroic couplets, a form often used for satirical or comical poetry. Belinda is also presented as immoral and impious, for example when she is performing “the sacred rites of pride (line 128), or with the enumeration of her cosmetics and several “Bibles” ( line 138), suggesting that to her, these things have the same value. The text “Snow White” condemns the second Queen by calling her “proud and haughty” (line 13) and presenting her as extremely jealous “she could not bear to be surpassed in beauty by anyone” (line 13). This exaggerated focus on beauty is ridiculous and a common way of making women look irrational and petty. “Snow White”, however, presents the good characters...

Singapore Explication

...In the poem “Singapore” by Mary Oliver, there is a very important lesson of social acceptance. The poet speaks of encountering a woman in an airport bathroom stall, cleaning an ashtray in the toilet, and the disgust that she first feels towards this woman and her job. The speaker does however, express that she moves past the judgment that she first feels towards the woman in the stall. She imagines parts of nature and wishes to put the woman in a beautiful place in life. In this poem, the poet uses imagery, connotation, metaphor and symbolism to describe what she is really seeing compared to what she is imagining and would like to see. Significantly, the speaker begins the poem by saying, “A darkness was ripped from my eyes” (line 2). The darkness that she is speaking of is the judgment that she places upon this woman in the stall. She first has a closed mind, a disturbed perception if you will, towards the cleaning lady. To say that it “was ripped from my eyes” (line 2) implies that she did attain a better perception of her. The speaker knew that she should not be so judgmental towards this woman and the job she is performing. It is obvious that she understands she should not feel this way when in the second stanza she states, “Disgust argued in my stomach” (line 6). For that feeling to argue, it exhibits her capability to understand. Bewilderment and dismay overcame the speaker. She feels disgusted by what most people consider such a degrading job, yet so displeased with herself...

Save as Many as You Ruin

...Save as Many as You Ruin by Simon Van Booy Is our future established and are we just following a route, which is already set? Or is everyone the architect of their own future? Manhattan was once a forest inhabited by Indians. As a result of the immigration the Dutch gave it the name New Amsterdam. Today Manhattan is the most densely populated county in the US, and one of the most populated areas in the world, and it is here the short story “Save as many as you ruin” take place. The story is written in third person with a limited point of view. The narrator keeps close to Gerard and describes his thoughts on almost every subject. Gerard’s feelings, thoughts and experiences are present by the narrator. The thoughts of Laurel and Lucy are based on descriptions and thoughts of Gerard, but nevertheless the reader seems to get an impression of their thoughts and feelings through the ones of Gerard. We jumps between present and past tense several times. We are quickly introduced to the main character, which is called Gerald. He is a middle-aged handsome man, who is living alone with his daughter Lucy. He seems to be very confused, maybe he has many things going on in his mind, he cannot control. He wants to stand out of the crowd and don’t be like the mannequins, he is talking about in the beginning; boring, unable to really fell, sleep, eat etc. He is the type of man who sleeps with many women, but does not let them get close to him emotionally. Gerald feels stabbing...

Reports to Wordsworth

...In the poem called “Report To Wordsworth” written by Boy Kim Cheng. The poem depicts a very negative image, which is that destruction of nature is imminent if mankind continues to colonialize and urbanize. In order to convey this image of the current natural world, the author uses language devices such as figurative language (personification, similes and metaphors), visual imagery, alliteration, contradiction and tone. Throughout the poem, the writer uses visual imagery in order to create this pessimistic feeling of today’s current natural. And that mankind is losing its special connection with nature, as we are busy with “getting and spending”. The author shows the importance of natures as he uses a capital letter when writing Nature. This consequently makes the word “nature” be considered as a great value. The author then uses phrases such as the phrase “Smothered by the smog,” (line 2) (which contains alliteration), exemplifies the idea that humans or anything associated with human activities are destroying nature. Such as in this case the pollution, that comes out of vehicles. In addition just like in William Wordsworth sonnet called “ The World Is Too Much With Us”, Cheng illustrates an image that if humans continue to colonies and urbanize, then the birds ; which symbolizes life and different species would become extinct, and consequently the planet would lack any life and harmony. In Addition, tone, symbols and repetition are of great importance in the poem...

Sustained Tourism Development

...Chapter I THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND Introduction Sustainable tourism development is actually taking proactive steps for long-term success that requires long-term sustainable tourism planning that brings all of the major local stakeholders to the table. It makes use of intelligent, sustainable tourism planning to focus on shared goals to move the entire community forward and create a Master Tourism Plan. And in addition major local stakeholders establish unique and creative funding options and marketing options that ensure success for the new tourism organization and the entire community as they move and grow into the future (Kerns, 2010). Local governments and tourism bureaus are the ones tasked with bringing all of the stakeholders to the table and creating a long-term, sustainable tourism master plan that will benefit everyone in the community. These leaders face the difficult task of managing very different groups while creating an attractive tourism product that encourages the desired type of tourist to visit. Local residents are essential partners in any tourism development efforts, as their lives will inevitably be touched by an increase in tourism. If the residents in a community are completely unwelcoming of tourism, then it will eventually fail. On the other hand, welcoming and friendly residents will create a warm and comfortable atmosphere where sustainable tourism will be able to flourish.
