April 2, 2013 The title Campus Racism 101 is such a clever tile. In college when you take a course and you’re just starting out it usually has 101 on the end. So by titling it campus racism 101 Nikki’s purpose is to give students a lesson telling them all they will need to know about school and the environment around them. Giovanni starts off the essay by saying “to bad racism isn’t painful. I like that, but to bad ignorance is.” (Giovanni 270) To some ignorance is just that, but to others it’s so much more and really can tear a person down or make them feel as if they don’t belong in society. Giovanni tells us how she teaches at a predominantly white school and people often ask her why Virginia tech? In response to that she says “because it’s here and so are black students.” (Giovanni 271) Giovanni states that people need to have a little perspective. “Where an you go and what can you do that frees you from interacting with the white American mentality?” (Giovanni 271) by saying this she meant that no matter where you go or what you do in life you cannot escape the ignorance of some people. So you have two choices, to challenge it with one of Giovanni’s witty responses as outlined in this essay or to ignore it and let it get to you. It was interesting to me when Giovanni said “will you be in some control of yourself and your actions, or will you be controlled by others?” (Giovanni 271) the way others perceive us to be or stereotype us to be is out of our hands. You cannot worry about those things you can only continue to live your life. “We, neither less nor more than other people need knowledge.” (Giovanni 271) when Giovanni says “we” she is talking about African Americans that are in school. ...Significant Legal Decisions Involving Hate Speech in America What exactly is Hate Speech? There are many different variations to this answer. According to dictionary.com, it is “speech that attacks a person or group on the basis of race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation” (“hate speech”). Anthony Lewis’ description of hate speech focuses more on the people it aims at: “Hate speech, it is called: virulent attack on Jews, blacks, Muslims, homosexuals, or members of any other group. It is pure hatred, not based on any wrong done by an individual” (157) Throughout history, many cases involving hate speech have been brought to court; each of them differ in their own ways and each brought a significant change to our Constitution. Our country prides itself in having freedom for all, and that includes freedom of speech. But when does freedom of speech cross the line? Many court decisions tried to come up with a solid answer, but there may not ever be a successful way to categorize hate speech. All of the cases covered here played a large part in transforming what the First Amendment covers. America started to recognize the significance of hate speech beginning in 1940, and policies began to form to protect offensive speech. At this point in history, hate speech was better known as “racial and religious propaganda” (Walker 62). Harper The relationship between Black Greek-letter organization membership and African American student engagement in almost exclusively White college classrooms was explored in this study. Data were collected through interviews with 131 members from seven undergraduate chapters at a large, predominantly White university in the Midwest. This study resulted in an explanatory model that shows how underrepresentation, voluntary race representation, and collective responsibility positively affect active participation, while Forced Representation has a negative effect. Findings also reveal that faculty teaching styles both positively and negatively affect engagement among African American sorority and fraternity members in their classes. The implications of these findings are discussed at the end of the article.
