May 12, 2013 Apples Brand Steve Jobs was and probably is still the greatest innovator of technology that we won’t see again anytime soon. Jobs determination and dedication to put the best product on the market was second to none. Jobs was into making his product the best, he has had his struggles along the way. His hard work and long hours resulted in not having a close relationship with his kids and his marriage. Jobs proved that if you have a vision you strive for the goal and whatever sacrifice you must make to accomplish this. With the death of Steve Jobs the question is can Apple survive without Jobs? Steve Jobs may have been known for his unethical antics by demoralizing his employees and taking credit for their work, but Jobs knew that in order for the Apple brand to be a success he had to run such a tight ship (Baggini, 2011). Jobs also criticized a number of his employees telling them that he didn’t have space for B and C workers only A+. If Phil Schiller can’t channel new products into ideas then Apple may be in trouble. Former managers are worried that Schiller won’t be able to carry the torch. They feel that he is over controlling and feels that he lacks the bold creative instincts needed to maintain Apples edge. Managers also feel that Schiller will be more of a conventional leader and may be prone to over hyping products in ways that may tarnish Apples brand (Burrows & Satariano, 2012).
Market Strategies In order for Apple to stay on top being able to market the product efficiently is one of the important factors if they want to prevent themselves from going under. Finch, (2012) says that “the best path to satisfying buyers would be to provide a unique, custom-designed product and marketing plan for each individual customer.” One of the

Does Apple Need a Great Man?

...8491520 GEL/Jan12/1 Does Apple need “a great man”? After the death of Steve Jobs, management experts are wondering whether Apple will survive without Steve Jobs or not? This issue is also considered in the “InsideApple: Can It Thrive Without Steve?” article, published on the Forbes’ webpage where commentaries on the book of Adam Lashinsky “InsideApple” are provided. This article describes the aspects of the book regarding successful implementation of the “radical management system” by Apples’ incomparable leadership guru Steve Jobs. The article states that the author of the book, Lashinsky, based on the theory of organizations development, predicts an early death of Apple explaining that the company has entered the “path to senescence and death”. In turn, the author of the article, Steve Denning, specifies that “Apple’s future, therefore, depends on understanding the management principles Steve Jobs used to make it successful, while also recognizing his shortcomings. Those principles are eminently replicable business practices that, once understood, any firm can implement. It does not require “a great man”. Is it real that “any firm can implement” and does not require “a great man”? Does not Apple need Steve Jobs? When the “great guru” was fired in 1985, the situation in the company was not good enough; however, everything has changed since his return in 1997 and implementation of the strategy, which is still quite successful. Thus, CNBC reports that “Apple shares are up more than...

Value and Ethics

...(Nickels, McHugh, & McHugh, Chapter 7, 2010). The innovation of Steve Job’s influential leadership has had a substantial impact on the fate of the organization and lives of followers of Apple Inc. At Apple Inc., business is slated to be conducted ethically, honestly and also claims to comply with all laws and regulations. There are many methods for evaluating and defining Steve Job’s style of ethical leadership in comparison to others. The Williams Institute Ethics Awareness Inventory Assessment defines one style of ethical leadership as Equity. Beliefs that there are no absolute standards of right and wrong are common with leaders that exhibit an Equity ethical leadership style. How does the management style used at Apple Inc. parallel with that of Equity? Apple has instituted policies not only for Apple employees but anyone doing business with Apple. In the article, “What You Don’t Know About Apple,” written in it were demonstrations that featured how well Apple has continued to function strongly both during the tenure of Steve Jobs and in the wake of Steve Jobs’ passing. The article also mentions where Apple has fallen behind in the same time period. Apple has made very many successful and innovative products that stand the test of time and bridge generational gaps. This paper will examine the pre/post Steve Jobs era of Apple in relation to its success and its attempt to maintain its frontrunner status in the digital marketplace. Though Apple is highly regarded in the digital marketplace, one would struggle to see success as the sales of certain products took years to actually reach the threshold of a bonafide success. This figure is demonstrated by the fact that it took four years for the first generation iPod to sell over 100 million units (Carr, 2013). Fortunately, it only took the iPad half the amount of time to sell the same amount. As with any consumer product, Apple’s products are far from flawless as they tend to have a few flaws in the first generation of every device. The next generation tends to work out the kinks and include more perks than the previous generation. It can be noted that some ...

Technological The product life cycle of Apple products are very short so the company’s revenues mainly depend on launch of new products and it‘s pressure to innovate is increasing. Moreover, the Chinese economy continues to grow despite worldwide economic contraction. As the economy becomes more developed, increased wages nationwide will increase the costs of production for Apple and its OEM partners. ...Competitive Strategies Student Name Professor Name BUS 508 Contemporary Business Date Differences of Apple and Microsoft corporate culture Scully (2011) gave a bird's eye view of Apple and Microsoft corporate culture. He said "In Steve's world, 'No compromises'.' In Bill's world, 'Hey, compromise is alright. We'll get it right the third time. We just want to have a land grab'." According to Scully, the two have entirely different approaches, both very, very successful. But in the era of consumer electronics, the Steve Jobs approach is a hands-down winner. Williams (2011) said that if there is one key difference between Microsoft and Apple, it is secrecy. Apple rarely shows its hand before a product is ready to ship. Microsoft usually offers sneak previews of products months, sometimes years, in advance. Sethi (2012) revealed the two corporate values that Apple implements - value and cost culture: When it comes to customers, Apple applies the notion of value. For example, Apple’s pricing strategy that is driven by its focus on the value. The customer is willing to pay a price that is equal to the product's perceived value to the customer. However, as long as the customers are satisfied, Apple is under no obligation to reduce its prices. When it comes to workers' wages and working conditions, Apple uses its dominant market position or buying power to acquire these services at the lowest possible price, thus keeping the largest share of the profit for itself and...

Starbucks offers premium coffee, tasty pastries, high quality coffee beans that consumers can buy to take home to brew themselves. While conducting my environmental scan I first began to look at the gender of the customers coming in to the establishment to purchase their Latte’s, Espressos’, and Danishes. I myself prefer to go without the coffee so the scan was interesting to conduct and observe. I saw that as far as the genders of the customers as far as which one frequent more the tally was equal. It’s also a place where people meet for social meetings many companies use Starbucks as a meeting place to have a cup of coffee and discuss business as they go over paperwork at the table. ...Leadership can be described as the manner and approaches that leaders uses to direct, implement plans and motivate people. Basically, it describes how leaders react, interact and treat employees at work. According to Bass (2007, p. 1), leadership can be defined as “an interaction between two or more members of a group that often involves a structuring or restructuring of the situation and the perception and expectations of the members”. There are various leadership styles namely the autocratic, democratic, laissez faire and charismatic. Basically leaders tend to use all these leadership styles depending on the situations; however, one of the styles is always the predominant on them. It has to be noted that a particular leadership style will not be effective in an organisational setting. Hence, different styles are needed according to different situations. Steve Jobs CEO of Apple has been a successful leader in this modern era. His approach to leadership is both fascinating and confusing and that is the reason why he has been able to make Apple a successful company. He has brought a lot of changes in the life of people through his greatest advanced technology ever made namely the Mac, the iPod, the iPad and iPhone but has also introduced a new concept for business and leadership.
