San Francisco Site Equipment and Hardware
When it comes to what hardware and software is needed for our company I completed research for the San Francisco office. What we will need for the office is:
• Windows 2008 Server
• AMD Quad core Processor
• Exchange server for emails and communications
• VPN in order to encrypt data and allow clients access through VPN at different locations
• Dedicated application server to host the needs of the companies multimedia production
• Computers with Windows 8 for daily functions
• Label Switch Routers with MPLS protocol to deliver quality service needed to support video, real-time voice and SLAs (Service Level Agreements)
• Ethernet cable for connection to network
• Firewall to control the in & out network traffic
When it comes to the cost I have listed each part with the price:
• Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise with SP! – 10 CALs = $1391.56
• AMD Opteron Dual-Core 8216 2.4 GHz Processor = $ 815.99
• Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 with a single CAL = $700 for server and $67 for CAL
• VPN service router = $229.00
• Dedicated server for multimedia = can be purchased on monthly basis for $183
• Windows 8 Pro = $199.00
• Business series N wireless router and firewall = $400
• Cat6 Ethernet cables = $292.38

Tampa Site Equipment and Hardware
For our Tampa site, we will need the equipment and hardware to set up our network infrastructure. We will use hardware in order to meet performance requirements, including flexibility, expandability, and reliability. The following will outline our recommend hardware and software that meet the requirements of our company. We will go over the common hardware involved, but most importantly, required for our network to run.
One important item, not necessarily a hardware, is the type of network medium that will be used. Wired networks need cable, or fiber, to transmit data.

Computers

...Modern GPUs use most of their transistors to do calculations related to 3D computer graphics. They were initially used to accelerate the memory-intensive work of texture mapping and rendering polygons, later adding units to accelerate geometric calculations such as the rotation and translation of vertices into different coordinate systems. Recent developments in GPUs include support for programmable shaders which can manipulate vertices and textures with many of the same operations supported by CPUs, oversampling and interpolation techniques to reduce aliasing, and very high-precision color spaces. Because most of these computations involve matrix and vector operations, engineers and scientists have increasingly studied the use of GPUs for non-graphical calculations. An example of GPUs being used non-graphically is the generation of Bitcoins, where the graphical processing unit is used to solve puzzles. In addition to the 3D hardware, today's GPUs include basic 2D acceleration and framebuffer capabilities (usually with a VGA compatibility mode). Newer cards like AMD/ATI HD5000-HD7000 even lack 2D acceleration, it has to be emulated by 3D hardware. [edit]GPU accelerated video decoding The ATI HD5470 GPU (above) features UVD 2.1 which enables it to decode AVC and VC-1 video formats- GPU from Vaio E series laptop Most GPUs made since 1995 support the YUV color space and hardware overlays, important for digital video playback, and many GPUs made since 2000 also support MPEG...

Partnering with Industry for a Computer Science

...Engineering Capstone Senior Design Course Ken Christensen[1], Dewey Rundus1, and Zornitza Genova Prodanoff1 1 2 Abstract A capstone design course is an important component of the senior year curriculum for engineering students and plays a key role in achieving departmental ABET EC 2000 outcomes. In the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of South Florida, we have partnered with industry to have students work in teams on industry-contributed “real world” projects. Industry partners contribute projects, mentor students, give a guest lecture, and provide the opportunity for students to present their project at the industry site. Students work on projects in teams and are given milestones and schedules to follow. The milestones include formal requirements, specifications and design, prototype demonstration, test plan, and final project delivery and presentation. The final presentation includes a project demonstration, user documentation, press release, and a poster that is permanently displayed in the department seminar room. The course includes formal lecture and reading assignments on the development process. A midterm exam covers these topics. Soft topics include discussions on working in teams. Our industry partners stress the importance of students being able to work well in teams. We hope that our experience can serve as a guide for other engineering departments considering industry partnering for their capstone design courses...
