Speedy Karr’s income is about $80,000 a year from his salary and bonus (his bonus is a percentage of the net income of the dealership). In addition to his income from Fast Talking Ed's, Speedy also has income from rentals of about $15,000 a year. Speedy's wife, Holiday, is employed, earning about $65,000 a year. Several years ago, Speedy became interested in auto car racing. In 2008, Speedy purchased a used car, which he converted into a racing stock car. The cost of the car, and the modifications made to it, cost Speedy about $75,000, which is being depreciated over a fiveyear life (using I.R.C. § 168). ...The Future of Motorcycles and ATV’s I decided to write my research paper on today’s new alternate powered motorcycles and ATV’s. I have been riding and racing sense I was 8 years old. I have seen a lot of changes with motorcycles and ATV’s over the years. I started out riding two-stroke motorcycles, then four-strokes and now I’m told that electric motorcycles will be on the tracks in the not too distant future. Every year I enjoy taking annual trips to Colorado and Oklahoma. It’s refreshing to get off the motocross track and enjoy riding some very fun OHV trails. My favorite part about riding trails is seeing all the beautiful scenery. But it seems every time I go trail riding, my group and I get yelled at by someone claiming that “were are destroying their trails” and that “were just making noise.” It irritates me that there are riders out there that don’t follow the trail rules, but I am not one of them. We stay on the trail, we are respectful, our bikes and ATV’s are under the required decibels and we love the land we ride on just as much as they do. ...Representations of Cars and Humans in Motoring Magazines Catharina Landström This paper analyses cultural signification in the co-production of gender and technology. Focusing on the popular genre of motoring magazines, it discerns a pattern organising men and women in opposite relations to cars. Men’s relationships with cars are premised on passion and pleasure while women are figured as rational and unable to attach emotionally to cars. This “gendered economy of pleasure” is traced in a close reading of motoring magazine representations of cars and humans. Further, a DVD representation of the Volvo YCC, a concept car developed by women for an imagined female user, is discussed in relation to this semiotic pattern. The paper is conceptual, texts are interpreted in order to bring forward aspects of meaning-making that are not immediately obvious. The objective is to critically illuminate one aspect of the cultural production of the car as a masculine technology.
