Cara Drape, an animal Welfare Officer of the city of Edmond Animal Services, on the topic of animal welfare, she believes animals do have rights and it is an obligation to take care and provide for them; we should learn to leave in peace with one another; no animal should be allowed to starve to death, whether is an ant colony or a cow; she believes in veterinarians and animal right activists ; that anyone who deals with animals should know that they feel pain; that they feel cold and hot; that they have emotions just like people do. Animal rights purpose is to avoid causing animals unnecessary suffering. Every day in countries around the world, animals are fighting for their lives, they are enslaved, beaten, and kept in chains to make them perform for sake of entertainment. They are restricted to tiny cages, burned, blinded, poisoned, and cut up alive, they are electrocuted, strangled, and skinned alive, in the name of science or fashion. Animal’s rights should always be protected, even when doing so is bothersome personally and not easy for the society. According to the article “The philosophy of animals rights”(2015), animals deserve rights because it is rational, scientific, unprejudiced, just, compassionate, unselfish, peace- loving etc. Human overpopulation is the number one threat to wild and domestic animals worldwide, third world countries are experiencing the most population growth, first world citizens, consume the most and are the ones causing the most impact. In addition, Cape Verde also has been recognized a global hotspot for terrestrial and marine biodiversity. Turtles lays eggs in our islands, in the past decade turtle extinction has been an issue, because they were being excessively hunted. However, I do not believe in such argument; firstly, facts should be taken into consideration. In the article “The philosophy of animal rights” (2015), one of the reasons for animal rights, is that it is environmentally wise; the exploitation of animals is one of the reasons for environmental degradation and problems. According to John Wynne-Tyson "Until we establish a felt sense of kinship between our own species and those fellow mortals who share with us the sun and shadow of life on this agonized planet, there is no hope for other species, there is no hope for the environment, and there is no hope for ourselves.". In Cape Verde, animals that are used as means of food are left out in the outdoors to look for their own means of food; for example, animals like cows, goats and pigs. At times, they enter people’s agriculture property, or dig into people’s trash; which, causes the growth of flies and other insects, that might end up in our food. This is the major cause for disorder and pollution, not to forget these animals are later sold in the market, and served as a dish. I have witnessed goats eating plastic bags, which is hazardous not only for them, but for us as consumers.
