When you think of writers you most likely think of famous authors and books, but the career of writing is a lot more than that. The career field of writing can be separated into two major groups, one writing what they want to write and hope they get buyers, the other works for employers or clients and write on subjects their employer wants (Overview par 2). No matter what kind of writer they are, they all use the same basic steps to create their project. The writer gathers information, sometimes interpreting complex events or information (Overview par 3). Writing, like other careers, have classes that will help you get to the career. Some high school courses that will help with writing are American Literature, Computer Applications, Creative Writing, English Literature, Keyboarding, Technical Writing, and World Literature (Helpful par 3). These classes all focus on writing and computers, but since most writers are self-employed other classes that could be useful are Accounting, Entrepreneurship, and Introduction to business (Helpful par 4).
Depending on the career field of writing, you can have a variety of wages ranging from $35,810 to $58,050 yearly (Writers 1 par). Most writers are self-employed and sell their works to different magazines, while others are famous authors or work on commission. Most people in the writing career field need a second job to support themselves and write in their free time and others use grants to support them while writing (Writers 1 par). Writers have many opportunities to advance. Those who work in small companies can easily work their way up by proving themselves to their employers. Beginning writers usually start by researching, fact checking, or copyediting and as they prove themselves they are given writing assignments (Advancement par 1)
Employment for Writing jobs is expected to increase as more people want magazines, newspapers, and television shows. It will also be easier to enter the job by doing daily or weekly newspapers, as well as small radio and television stations. Since more and more people are using the internet, web based media will be more popular and could become jobs (Employment par 4). An example of an internet site that has become jobs for many people is YouTube. Many job openings will occur in this field since freelance writings leave the field because they can not earn enough.
