Motivation, the process that account for an individual’s willingness to exert high levels of effort to reach organizational goals, conditioned by the effort’s to satisfy some individual need. Effort, a measure of intensity or drive direction toward organizational goals need personalized reason to exert effort. Motivation works best when individual needs are compatible with organizational goals.”

Caribbean managers are no different from any other manager in any other part of the world, whether you are a manager in North or South America, Asia or China; Managers are expected to accomplish their organization’s goals through people as effectively and efficiently as possible. A major factor in attaining the goals of an organization would be the ability of management to motivate employees. It is important to have a motivated staff, when motivated, employee’s efforts can be increased and sustained under the right conditions; employee can be assigned a task and completed that task without constant supervision. Self motivated employees would be vital asset in any organization, by providing a competitive advantage by way of offering suggestions and working to satisfy customers.

The development of motivation and its enhancement can be found in a number of motivational theories. These theories can be divided into three categories, Needs, Cognitive and Reinforcement . In the first category of Needs consist of theorist such as Maslow’s Hierarch of needs, Alderfer’s ERG theory, Herberg’s two factor theory and McClelland’s Learned Needs theory. Second category, Cognitive, a contemporary approach these theories consist of, expectancy theory, equity theory/ social comparison and the goal setting theory. The third category is that of reinforcement theory or operant conditioning , this is geared towards showing how rewards and reinforcement sustains motivation over time.

They felt like these were the best two sources to use show how the Atlantic Slave Trade was really like and what some of the slaves experienced. Both sources are descriptive but don’t go into detail, mostly explains how things were ran at a farm or plantation in the south during these times. Researchers also explain in these two sources how the work on the fields was done and what punishment was given for wrong doing done by the laborers. The first of the two sources illustrates the many ways laborers showed defiance against their masters. One of the entries suggests that some slaves did eventually get away; it says that two of them ran away and only Charles got away by shoving one of the men aside in the sheep pen. ...Of the 10 to 16 million Africans who survived the voyage to the New World, over one-third landed in Brazil and between 60 and 70 percent ended up in Brazil or the sugar colonies of the Caribbean. Only 6 percent arrived in what is now the United States. Yet by 1860, approximately two thirds of all New World slaves lived in the American South. For a long time it was widely assumed that southern slavery was harsher and crueler than slavery in Latin America, where the Catholic church insisted that slaves had a right to marry, to seek relief from a cruel master, and to purchase their freedom. Spanish and Portuguese colonists were thought to be less tainted by racial prejudice than North Americans and Latin American slavery was believed to be less subject to the pressures of a competitive capitalist economy. In practice, neither the Church nor the courts offered much protection to Latin American slaves. Access to freedom was greater in Latin America, but in many cases masters freed sick, elderly, crippled, or simply unneeded slaves in order to relieve themselves of financial responsibilities. Death rates among slaves in the Caribbean were one-third higher than in the South, and suicide appears to have been much more common.
