Carry Nation or Carrie Nation was a strong believer in doing what was best for the people of America and would try to help thought otherwise. Nation's past was very influential what she did and why she did it. Nation got married in 1867 to Charles Gloyd, a physician. Gloyd had a drinking problem and was a very heavy drinker. When the couple had a child named Charlien who was born with a condition and Nation blamed the condition on Gloyd's drinking problem. Soon after Carry Nation left Gloyd and became a teacher. Years later in 1877 she remarried to a man named David Nation. David and Carry moved to Texas where she would teach Sunday school. There she mainly spoke out about the evils of drinking, but would also talk about tobacco and women's rights and would known as “Mother Nation”. Nation started to see her life as if she was a profit. She started noticing more things that would lead her to that conclusion as if God was directing her life. “She began to experience visions and a sense of divine protection. The latter seemed to be confirmed when her rooming house was left untouched by a town fire in 1889. She even believed her name, Carry A. Nation, was foreordained.” (Social Issues). Moreover Carry Nation's past was her main influence for starting her ideals and well the main reason for her prohibition reform. Carry A. Nation, believed that drinking was the cause of many problems in American society during the time of the late 1800s. She would try to help those in need no matter who they were. For instance, Carry Nation would help prisoners in jail because she thought that alcohol was the main reason inmates had their troubles. During the time of prohibition many illegal things were done to maneuver alcohol for money. Illegal bars were setup and illegal men's clubs were all around. Carry would petition these bars by standing outside with other supporters and preaching loudly. Soon after Carry's efforts the bars would be closed. Also, Carry Nation believed that God had come to her and told her to close the bars in Kiowa, Kansas. (Famous Missourians). Now this time instead of preaching, praying and singing she took a more violent approach and decided to throw bricks. Nation continued these acts of destruction in Wichita, Kansas and in Topeka someone had handed her a hatchet. This hatchet would be a symbol of her strong beliefs in prohibition and a possession of her great destruction to those who do not follow the prohibition laws. Further more nation had been against the people that chose not to obey the laws and the humane laws she supported. Carry Nation would continue to be great. “Nation was a strong, six-foot-tall woman, and when her method became violent people noticed. The Kansas WCTU (Woman's Christian Temperance Union) presented her with a gold medallion inscribed, 'To the Bravest Woman in Kansas.' ” (Famous Missourians). In Kansas where she was known as “Mother Nation” she would fight and fight again for her point to get across to those who have not listened. For example, “She was beaten and jailed many times. After one 'smashing,' Nick Chiles, a black politician and bar owner, bailed her out if jail. He also published her first newspaper, The Smasher's Mail.” (Famous Missourians). Throughout Kansas she was known, Carry Nation was a force to be reckoned with she and was the reformer that changed society as Kansas knew it and with only a few raging tactics. Carry Nations final years were the ones that showed the most about her fight and will power to get her points across. Carrie A. Nation had decided to officially change her name to Carry, where she thought her name now meant something more to what she represented to the world, “ 'Carry A Nation for Prohibition.' “ (Famous Missourians). Now although Nation was very popular all around the world at this time, doing lectures in Great Britain and discussing more about the rights of women, she would tend to get made fun of by many. “A group of college students lured her to campus by pretending to support her, and used her visit to put her down.” (Famous Missourians). Despite being made fun of she had chose to bring up the issue of women not being able to vote and how they can help the democratic process. Eventually Carry Nation retired and bought a house that was large enough for a few women who had been homeless from their drunken husbands. Nation had collapsed on stage during a lecture in January of 1911and later that year died on June 2, 1911, but she died doing what she believed in and what she was fighting for her entire life. In all, the end of Carry A. Nation's carrier was what proved to be her show of character and how she was presented to American society. In conclusion, Carry Amelia Moore Nation had done many things during the Progressive Era to influence prohibition, Nation's use of petitioning and violently reckoning would largely impact American prohibition. Carry Nation's works have proved to be influential with the addition of two amendments to the U.S. Constitution. The eighteenth amendment and the nineteenth amendment were both added years later after Nation's death but it was her fire and her willingness to prove that alcohol and tobacco were the problems that American society had and had to fix. Finally, prohibition was ended in 1933 with another constitutional amendment, and all because of Carry Nation had started. Carry A. Nation is why we have the restrictions on alcohol that we do today and she is the reason why women fought for suffrage and why women have the rights they do today. Carry A. Nation impacted American society forever with all that she has done to get her beliefs across to the nation that she carried.
