> A LOOK AT WHAT’S “MADE IN AMERICA.”

C

by T O N Y Q U I R O G A

ontrary to popular belief, America still builds cars—a lot of them. Nearly 8 million cars and trucks came out of U.S. plants last year. Step back and look at the entire North American continent, and production adds up to more than 12 million units. But even if a vehicle is made by an American company by American workers, it’s not necessarily an American car, at least according to our government. By Uncle Sam’s reckoning, if 75 percent (by value) or more of a car’s parts come from the U.S. or Canada, it’s considered a domestic product; less than that, and it’s not. The maps here tell you not only where your North American–made car is built, but just how American it really is.

Aggressive Driving

...Peter Zuppardo Essay November 21, 2014 How We Act Behind Close Curtains Many of us act a different way when we are behind something that no one can truly see us. I relate Vanderbilt’s article and Kiki article on how they misuse the new technology. In the Kiki essay she was posting pictures of herself online and no one really knew who it was, until some people hacked into her page. Even when she was posting pictures and video of herself which made people comment nasty things talking about her. If those people that comment mean things talking about her where not just a profile and was someone face to face we usually wouldn't say things like that. Also in the Vanderbilt’s essay he talks about the road rage and the different types of communication while driving. Many people while driving get very upset with other drivers if they need to be somewhere quickly, or even if the person is driving slower then they want to drive, which cause the person that is behind the person that is going slow to speed up and cut them off. I have seen a lot of incidents where people cut someone off and they want to get pay back on they so they try to cut them off back, then it turns into an accident. Citizens do not understand how dangerous cars and truck are when we are behind the wheel, they can hurt someone very badly plus even kill them. We as people need to understand that our ethical compilations need to help us from being cyborgs, to understand that we have to live our own life without having...

Persuasion

...much the media influences us everyday. Everyday we are bombarded with pictures, logos and ads to try and get us to buy things from these companies. These ads are made to make us want things, to make us think we need them or cannot live with out them. What lengths do these companies go to in order to get us to buy their product? I was watching television at home and a certain commercial stood out to me. This was a commercial about an Audi (car) it interested me right away since the commercial was about the terrible snowstorm we had last year and showed pictures that were on the news. I saw this commercial on April 11, 2011, it was about the Audi A4 but as I was watching the commercial I noticed it was not the Audi A4 in the commercial at all. It was a different car. The advertiser for this ad is trying to appeal to all age groups, but I can also tell that this ad is meant to lure you in by talking about our previous snowstorm. The commercial shows the Audi driving right out of the snow when as you know the snow had to have been 10+ inches from our storm. When showing that this car can drive out of the snow it was also showing all of the other cars on the road that could not drive out of the snow. They were stuck. When an advertiser shows you a commercial like this they are trying to accomplish a big thing, that their item is better then everyone else’s. They are trying to prove that the car they sell will come out of the snow better then the car every other company makes...

The most recent decline in the economy has lead to some drastic changes in which the average consumers are not buying a new car as quickly as they have in the previous years. The car business itself has declined in the selling of new vehicles also because of the average consumer not wanting to create another household expense. Most consumers are trying to keep their current vehicles in good condition which means routine maintenance as well as keeping the body of their vehicles in good condition. Looking for ways to help the consumer investments become worth more once the economy makes a turn around. There is a need for adding some ways to prevent the investment of a car from loosing value because of damage to the overall body of the vehicle. The damage usually comes from others negligence and cause unforeseen dents that slowly...

...which is a part of Hyundai Group. It has been established 29th December 1967. It has achieved a high success domestically and internally. In this question we will highlight the difficulties faced Hyundai including its competitors, how they overcome these problems domestically and internally and the strategies adapted to compete effectively . HMC has faced some of the difficulties & problems that affect its market position & brand image. Their problems is going around three main problems which are "Sales, rate & quality". HMC rates was so cheap which made the product is undervalued by the customers. In fact, the cheap price of their cars reflect its quality as some customers are needed for expensive cars. Therefore, Hyundai goal in US only to maintain its share not to gain more profits & sales in one had. On the other hand, segmenting low level –moderate level people and focus on cost saving cars rather than high quality oriented cars affected it's brand image & identity. Moreover, Hyundai is caring only to save money by having cheap labor which also affect its quality of working and having lots of workers strikes. In addition, we can't forget that inherited Chairmanships that gave the priority to the family to run the business rather than the qualified professional from management. ...as a result, the born of many physics forces like momentum, impulse, inertia and friction. But what is the relationship between collision and a car crash? What we may not notice is that physics is all around us in our life and every life event involves its. The path we take every morning in our way to school, the traveling of the car is a very good example. Studies prove and affirm that the survivors of severe car crashes, survive thanks to the way of protection they used and how is the car designed with specific and special safety precautions. That was our main point we wanted to achieve while making our car for the project. Our design was basically a truck like a jeep. It was all made up of carboard, wood and other small details that beenfit the truck to make it heavier, more rough and hard. It was also covered with newspaper, as a result, giving the car a very hard texture. The passengers seat, was made up all of soft materials like cotton, pads and sponges. The egg was attached with two rubber strings, simulating a safety seat bealt and helping as a support for the egg. All this details and spefcific design had a main goal and something specific to achieve: preventing the egg from breaking and keep it secure in its seat. The demostration of collision and all its forces acting against in this experiment consisted on giving car some random force and distance using a rubber spring, pushing it and throwing it against the wall so the collision can occur. We did the same procedure...

Automoblies Advancing in Technology

...res=9C02E7DD1639F93BA25755C0A9649D8B63&ref=samgrobart June 11, 2012, Sam Grobart tells us that on Monday at Apples developing conference they had announced that they were going to start making new devices and apps that were voice command. But another idea along with that expansion is adding Siri to very many popular brands of cars. One of the main drawbacks may be that in order to have Siri installed, the car is also going to require a reliable connection and a well-stocked server. Adding Siri can somewhat reduce prices of the cars such as the factory add-on of a navigation system that adds on thousands of dollars to retail price. It also has very many technological benefits. They are trying to take away some of the distracting parts that cause car accidents by turning some of those simple car functions into voice command. Some other points that they try and make are that voice commands might not be visually distracting but they are cognitively distracting. We can talk to objects and hear the responses, which may be better than having your phone in your hand but talking can still distract you. This article does seem like a reliable source because it came from the NY Times which is a very well-known newspaper. It is also current because it states that it appeared in print June 18, 2012 on page B4 with headline: Apple and Siri in Driver’s Seat. This research is kind of both, biased and objective. Grobart gives us information from the Apple conferences and personal opinions, which make the...

Roadmap to the Development Process of Toyota Prius

...Toyota Hybrid cars. Toyota Motor Corporation is a famous Japanese multinational corporation, and is considered the world’s second largest automaker of automobiles, trucks, buses, robots, and providing financial services. When Toyota and other Japanese carmakers entered the American market, they were not considered as a threat to the American auto industry because it was believed their cars had no appeal to American consumers However, in the 1970s, due to several problems like environmental regulations, and quality control issues with American cars, a good number of American car owners began searching for alternatives to poorly made American cars. In response to these changes, Toyota and other Japanese carmakers aggressively marketed their cars to Americans as being fuel-efficient, environmentally friendly, and having better build quality than American cars. In addition, Toyota marketed their cars with commercials involving young Toyota drivers jumping in the air. As a result, the Japanese’s marketing campaign along with continuing problems from the Big Three auto manufacturers, allowed import cars to make up about 20 percent of the US car market by 1980. Stage1 General Motors, Ford and Daimler-Chrysler focused in the late 1990s on mergers and acquisitions for improving their business positions to meet future challenges. Toyota, meanwhile, centered its business strategy on technological innovation and persistent environmental product development. The price of oil was not...

Narration Essay

...outside when we had left Rhode Island after our week of being on vacation. I got in my sister’s car and sat in the passenger seat, like I always do. We weren't nearly close to being home when I realized how important my life was. I saw my life flash before my eyes in a split second, while hearing the screeching of the tires. There were vivid memories that stuck in my mind; home, happiness, and friends. The thought of how I took everything for granted. Suddenly the car jerked and a loud crushing of metal occurred. My chest was burning from the seatbelt, and somehow my forehead felt like it had been punched. This car accident made me realize how important life is and not to take home, happiness, and friends for granted. While listening to the tires yelling; my mind’s first thought was of home, of my family. Snow was falling on my nose and all six of us were in a huge Christmas tree farm. It is a competition each year to see which one of us finds the fattest and biggest Christmas tree to put in the living room. This was the memory that crossed my mind of my family. The memory of how I didn't tell them that I loved them that day, or even the day of the car accident. I had taken my family for granted; I didn't tell them just how much I loved them before the car accident.  I thought about how my family would feel if my sister and I didn’t live through the accident.  Thinking about my family made me realize just how important my life is. Happiness crossed through my mind as my body began...

“We Shape Our Tools, and Thereafter Our Tools Shape Us”

...revolutionized itself to a point where that almost everything innovative that we now do will harm something else in a negative manner. This is evidently proven from the things that have been invented over time. Going back 100 years from now it is evident that changes have been significant everywhere across the world and in nearly every case it is the tools that we have shaped that are now shaping us, this is becoming a problem in many cases. Starting right back when the hammer was invented. It can be proven that the tools that we make definitely have an influence on the way we interact on a day-to-day basis. There is no specific date on when the hammer was first utilized or invented but it can be said that the cavemen used to use rocks to help them hit something with more force. Essentially this is what a hammer is used for nowadays but in a much more technical manner. Back when the cavemen were using the hammer (rocks) they were using it to hunt down animals and deliver repetitive blows with force resulting in broken bones and less overall effort from the caveman himself. This early innovation made life easier for cavemen. Over time the hammer improved significantly until it came to a point where the hammer was then shaping the lives of others. For example the basic hammer that was as simple as a big...

Green Car

...Turn Your Automobile Green Turn Your Car Green Are you tried of paying high prices for gas? Are you tried of America relying on foreign oil to fuel our automobiles? In the last week, I have heard more and more friends, neighbors and co-workers complain that we need to finally get serious about pushing alternative-fueled vehicles. The only way this can happen is if we start now. I propose that us as Americans start investing in our own separation of foreign oil dependency. Case in point; the hybrid car is one which typically uses more than one source of power. Hybrids use an electrical motor to run the car and a gasoline engine to charge the batteries which power the electrical motor. The gasoline engine is also used to give the car extra power when needed. Hybrids get about twice the mileage of regular gas driven cars. Whereas the average gas fueled car gets about 20 mpg, the hybrid gets about 40mpg. Experts predict that hybrids could make up 30 to 35 percent of America auto market by 2015. However, if every body in America went out today and traded their regular gas driven cars in for hybrids, we could cut America’s foreign oil dependency in half. Another alternative to America’s dependency to foreign oil is Ethanol Fuel. The problem with this is, us as Americans need to demand it. We can’t set back and wait for the government to make it available for us years down the line. We must demand it now. Ethanol is a liquid fuel made from vegetable type sources instead of from oil....

Journal 1

...In preparation for this case, as a team we waited for the professor to provide us with our role/team assignments. We also made sure we understood directions clearly before making any type of strategies. Strategy Used The strategy that was used in the beginning was strictly competitive and later it became accommodating after we went against our word after our first negotiation. As a team we concluded from the instructions that we were going against the counterpart in order to maximize our teams profits at any cost, maximizing the outcome now and not worry about a long-term relationship in the future. I believe the strategy our counterpart used was collaborative. They strategized that at the end of our negotiation we could have come to an equal profit. SWOT Analysis (self and counterpart) As a team our main strength in the initial strategy was that we communicated well when discussing our first move in opening or closing the Corner Store. At our first negotiation the team agreed to stick to our competitive strategy and maximize our profit at any cost. The counterparts strategy was leaning towards being collaborative. The counterpart gave us free flow of information by letting our team know that they wanted to have equal profits. We used their negotiation as an open opportunity to go against what was agreed on. At I believe both parties changed their strategies. The counterpart then didn't trust us and went from collaborative to avoidance. At the second negotiation the counterpart...

Trading Restrictions

...about the most used trading restrictions: Tariff and Quota. First, I want to exemplify the importance of trade restrictions for imports, as well as exports by showing what happened in the U.S. Motor industry. In 1980 the United Auto Workers(UAW) and Ford Motor Company petitioned the International Trade Commission(ITC) to recommend relief from import competition. During the first half of that year, foreign companies shipped 1.2 million passenger cars to the United States, increased 21 percent compare to previous year. The foreign share of the U.S. new car market increased from 17 percent to 25 percent in that period. This caused a huge breakdown in U.S. Motor Market. For example, Chrysler made huge losses and was forced to sell most of its foreign subsidiaries. Ford Motor made even larger losses. General Motors had to borrow large sums to keep the company running. By the end of 980, 193,000 out of 730,000 members of the UAW were unemployed. The problems of the motor industry were due to a shift in demand to small, fuel-efficient cars caused by higher petrol prices....

Toyota Recall Crisis

...Proceedings of the 2012 International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management Istanbul, Turkey, July 3 – 6, 2012 Car Recalls: A Problem Unique to Toyota or For All Car Makers? Kamrul Ahsan School of Management and Information Systems, Faculty of Business and Law Victoria University Australia Abstract Often automobile recalls are drawing media and public attention. Influenced by Toyota’s recent automobile recalls 2009-2010 this research conducts an empirical study on historical car recalls. The research uses secondary data from recall websites maintained by public and private organizations. For different car model year and manufacturer the study looks at frequency of recalls, recorded customer complaints, and yearly sales data. Analysis shows recalls are a common event with the majority of recalls initiated by only a few car makers. Though car makers use many eye catching and popular quality and customer care slogans and programs, many popular car makers still face valid customer complaints and consequently face many unwanted recalls. This study identifies that most recalls occur during the first five years of the car model year. This preliminary study of automobile recalls can be further extended at a later stage to identify key causes of recall. Keywords Product recalls, Reverse logistics, car recalls, product returns, closed loop supply chain 1. Introduction Though manufacturers use state-of-the-art operations philosophies, tools and techniques...
