Job Crafting

#1. I believe that people continue to work jobs that are not satisfying to them personally for several reasons. One reason being that some people stay at their job due to the compensation package and/or benefits and feel that they are either not going to find as good of pay elsewhere or to some people, compensation may outweigh the benefits of complete satisfaction in the work place. Secondly, you have some people that may feel limited in their job because they don’t have certain criteria such as education or enough experience to seek employment elsewhere or feel they can move up and develop with their current company and thus, feel “trapped” in their current situation. Others may stay in a job that doesn’t fulfill their needs simply due to fear. Change is scary. Some people don’t do well with change or taking ‘risks’ due to the unknown outcome of doing so. With that being said, age could even play a key factor as the older we become, the more obligations and responsibilities we have; meaning, our decisions don’t just affect us but also our families and financial obligations (i.e. bills). As we age, some people may not feel they have the flexibility in their lifestyles to chance the unknown.
It’s tough to answer such a general question as to whether or not organizations help people craft satisfying and motivating jobs because each organization operates completely different from the next and it could very easily depend on your particular position in the company (entry level vs. higher levels). My first thought while reading the article was that Fatima was very lucky to have the understanding, support and flexibility within her company to reconstruct her job and role.
