California Public Policy Case Study: AB 1014
On February 22, 2013 a new form of legislation was created to allow family members and law enforcement officers ask a judge to issue temporary restraining orders preventing people from possessing a firearm when a person poses a threat: Assembly Bill 1014. Passed on a 23-8 vote and signed by California Governor Jerry Brown on Wednesday September 30th. The bill was brought to light after twenty two year old Elliot Rodgers legally bought three semi-automatic rifles with intent to shoot University of Santa Barbara students killing six students and taking his own life. Prevailing law declares those that have been admitted to a mental health institution are denied the right to purchase firearms under the circumstances of: a certified therapist alerts the police that the individual is a danger to themselves and others, the individual has been previously been convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor, have under gone a …show more content…

While the bill is in the senate, it faces many readings, many referrals to committees, amended to readings three times; then sent back to the assembly. The senate amendments finish leading to a vote of Ayes: 48 to Noes: 28. On September 10th, the bill is presented to Governor Jerry Brown at 10 am; twenty days following the bill was signed and will be taken into effect on January 1st

Millerscoors vs Anheuser-Busch

...of the company, in June 2008, MillerCoors has been very profitable and has enjoyed steady growth in their market share. They have done this by integrating innovation as a major goal in their products, providing them with a certain level of differentiation, while reducing costs through the exploitation of synergies that exist in their different processes. MillerCoors was one of the very few breweries that performed positively throughout the economic recession that broke out in 2008. Although things are looking very bright for MillerCoors in regards to their performance in the past few years, and their growth in market share, Anheuser Busch is still the giant of the beer industry and holds a 47% of the market share. Then very recently major financial institutions like Sonali Bank, Basic Bank etc. were caught in financial scam which again shook the confidence of the market to such industries. These events renewed and reinforced people’s interest in study of corporate governance and how it could have prevented such mishaps. ...The Ethical and Legal Complexity of Medical Tourism: Questions of International Justice, Economic Redistribution and Health Care Reform Professor Sarah McBride Toro Longe April 18, 2010 M.J. Thesis in Health Law Abstract This is an essay on medical tourism in the United States of America (U.S.). It includes a brief history of the U.S. health care system, examines the social, cultural, ethical, and legal issues that have affected health care changes in America. With the number of Americans going overseas to seek medical care steadily rising, the American insurance industry expanding benefits, and the Joint Commission accrediting facilities for globalization of the health care marketplace, medical tourism should become increasingly important in the health care industry. While there are many reasons for patients seeking health care outside of their own country, one that is particularly easy to overlook is the outsourcing of health care and its effect in U.S. and around the world. The purpose of this paper is to examine the concept of medical tourism, noting the specific medical tourism destinations, presenting reasons for the recent increase in medical tourism, and examining the risks and benefits, as well as wrestling with the challenging ethical and legal issues inherent in medical tourism. The paper will conclude with consideration of the role of the law in medical tourism. Introduction Over the past 100 years, the United States of America (U.S.) has changed greatly...

Most students, however, will benefit from some coaching to make the study of investment easier and more efficient. If you had a good introductory quantitative methods course, and like the text that was used, you may want to refer to it whenever you feel in need of a refresher. If you feel uncomfortable with standard quantitative texts, this reference is for you. Our aim is to present the essential quantitative concepts and methods in a self-contained, nontechnical, and intuitive way. Our approach is structured in line with requirements for the CFA program. The material included is relevant to investment management by the ICFA, the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts. We hope you find this appendix helpful. Use it to make your venture into investments more enjoyable. 1006 Appendix A 1007 A.1 PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTIONS Statisticians talk about “experiments,” or “trials,” and refer to possible outcomes as “events.” In a roll of a die, for example, the “elementary events” are the numbers 1 through 6. Turning up one side represents the most disaggregate mutually exclusive outcome. Other events are compound, that is, they consist of more than one elementary event, such as the result “odd number” or “less than 4.” In this case “odd” and “less than 4” are not mutually exclusive. Compound events can be mutually exclusive outcomes, however, such as “less than 4” and “equal to or greater...
