Assignment 3.3: Case Study, Casa de Diseno
Requirement A
What are Casa de Diseno’s existing operating cycle (OC), cash conversion cycle (CCC), and resource investment need?
Operating Cycle = average age of inventory + average collection period.
OC = AAI + ACP
110 days + 75 = 185 days.
Cash Conversion Cycle (CCC) = OC –average payment period (APP). CCC = OC – APP 185 days – 30 days = 155 days.
Resource Investment needed = (Annual operating cycle investments ÷ 365) x CCC ($26,500,000 ÷ 365) x 155 = $11,253,424.657
Casa de Diseno’s OC, CCC and resource investment need is as follows:
OC = 185 days
CCC = 155 days
Resource Investment need = $11,253,425. (Gitman & Zutter 2012, pp. 604-606)
Requirement B
Industry OC = 83 days + 75 days = 158 days
Industry CCC = 158 days – 39 days= 119 days
Industry Resource needed = ($26,500,000 ÷ 365) x119 = $8,639,726
Industry OC is 158 days.
Industry CCC is 119 days.
Industry Resource need is $8,639,726. (Gitman & Zutter 2012, pp. 604-606)
Requirement C Casa de Diseno Firm Resource Need $11,253,425 Less: Industry resource needed $ 8,639,726 $2,613,699
Cost of inefficiency = $2,613,699 x 15% annual interest = $392,054.85
The cost of Casa de Diseno’s operational inefficiency is $392,055. (Gitman & Zutter 2012, pp. 604-606)
Requirement D 1. Offering 3/10, net 60:
Reduction in collection period = 75 days x (1 – 0.4) = 5 days
OC = 83 days + 45 days = 128 days
CCC = 128 days – 39 days = 89 days.
Resources needed = ($26,500,000 ÷ 365) x 89 days = $6,461,643.84
Resources needed = $6,461,644
Additional savings = $8,639,726 - $6,461,644 = $2,178,082
$2,178,082 x 15% = $326,712.30
Additional savings result is $326,712. 2. Reduction in sales = $40,000,000 x .45 x .03 = $540,000. 3. Average investment in

...Casa de Diseno case study Pin It In January 2007, Teresa Leal was named treasurer of Casa de Diseño. She decided that she could best orient herself by systematically examining each area of the company's financial operations. She began by studying the firm's short-term financial activities. Casa de Diseño is located in southern California and specializes in a furniture line called "Ligne Moderna." Of high quality and contemporary design, the furniture appeals to the customer who wants something unique for his or her home or apartment. Most Ligne Moderna furniture is built by special order, because a wide variety of upholstery, accent trimming, and colors are available. The product line is distributed through exclusive dealership arrangements with well-established retail stores. Casa de Diseño's manufacturing process virtually eliminates the use of wood. Plastic and metal provide the basic framework, and wood is used only for decorative purposes. Casa de Diseño entered the plastic-furniture market in late 2001. The company markets its plastic-furniture products as indoor-outdoor items under the brand name "Futuro." Futuro plastic furniture emphasizes comfort, durability, and practicality and is distributed through wholesalers. The Futuro line has been very successful, accounting for nearly 40 percent of the firm's sales and profits in 2006. Casa de Diseño anticipates some additions to the Futuro line and also some limited change of direction in its promotion...

...Research Project Submitted to the School of Graduate Studies of the University of Lethbridge in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree MASTER OF SCIENCE IN MANAGEMENT Faculty of Management University of Lethbridge LETHBRIDGE, ALBERTA, CANADA © Salvador Barragán, 2005 ii Abstract It has been ten years since the signature of the NAFTA agreement among Canada, U.S., and Mexico. For Mexico, this was a decisive step away from a protectionism model toward a free trade market. One of the main purposes for Mexico in joining NAFTA was to increase the competitiveness of its manufacturing sector, especially the automotive industry. In this paper, Porter’s Diamond Model of national competitiveness and some critiques that attempt to extend the usefulness of the model are analyzed. The Doubled Diamond and the role of MNEs in a host country are both examined through a case study research of the foreign-owned automobile industry in Mexico. The findings of this study show evidence of a broader role of MNEs than in the original framework, as well as the usefulness of the doubled diamond extension to explain alternative sources of competitiveness in early stages of development. iii Acknowledgments The culmination of this thesis can be seen as a successful project. An analogy with Porter’s Model, one of the premises to have a successful industry is to have supporting and related industries. In the case of this thesis is not the exception. There has been...
