Tesla Model 3 prospects in China
Tesla Motors unveiled its most affordable car so far, the Model 3 at the end of last month. The company is offering a reservation for a down payment of roughly $ 1000. As a result of such easy deal for such a charming thing, the company has received almost 400,000 pre-orders for its new Model 3 sedan. The excitement was already evident with hundreds of Tesla fans across the US and other main markets seen lined up outside dealerships before the car was even officially unveiled, and Tesla received more than twice the Model 3 pre-orders it expected.
Model 3 starts with $ 35,000 for its basic model which has at least 215 miles of range. However, there is close to a year before the production version comes out. It …show more content…
Priced at only $ 23,000, the BYD Qin is the top selling electric car present in the Chinese market. Compared to this, Tesla’s Model 3 in no way addresses the affordability issue for the Chinese customers. Still, Model 3 is popular worldwide. And if it really delivers on the promises the company has made regarding the electric sedan, most of the Chinese rich won’t mind that gap in pricing for the nameplate they are getting. Tesla has also not been able to touch the cultural aspects in the cars it made for China. Some comments on social networking sites indicate just that. One of the top comments on a Weibo post featuring the car said that the "Front looks like Voldemort." Many of the comments were also about the not so rich interiors which did not appear to be enough for the price that the car.
The supercharger network:
The supercharger network in China is still in the developing stage. Thus, Tesla will have to increase the pace of development of the charging infrastructure in the country. Other than the east coast, China doesn’t have ample nearness of supercharging stations. So Tesla’s focus should be to increase the density of the superchargers in the middle and the western regions as well. Also, most Chinese people of even the middle and upper class who could own a Model 3 live in apartments in the city unlike in the US. So, some method of charging their cars will have to be devised in order to make the ownership of the car convenient. However, this issue is a general one for any EV seller in China.
