...BACKGROUND In This Case Study Background Challenge Solution Results Lessons Learned Next Steps PDF Version [pic] How Cisco IT Upgraded Its ERP Manufacturing and Finance Modules  (PDF - 255 KB) Don’t fix it if it’s not broken - especially if you are talking about an extensive enterprise software foundation, right? Not necessarily. In the case of the Oracle software environment, Cisco® management teams decided that it was time to upgrade even though the Oracle 10.7 software was still getting the job done. IT, operations, and executive teams all concurred that this vital component of the company’s IT infrastructure needed to be modernized. While there would be clear benefits from an upgrade to Oracle 11i, the main decision drivers were the need to move away from an outdated platform that was becoming cost-prohibitive for supporting Cisco’s growth and evolving business requirements. In particular, any future development of enterprise solutions would be compromised if developed on a less-than-current Oracle platform. “Remaining competitive on a global scale often comes down to our ability to efficiently respond to changing operations, to work with new partners and suppliers, and to make sure that our employees have fast access to the latest productivity-enhancing technology and decision-making tools. Having an integrated, modern platform allows us to more rapidly respond to changing business requirements and to improve partner productivity and customer satisfaction...

...                      Module 1 –Case Study 1   Chapter 3, Case 1: Advance America Implements Grid Computing   Critical Thinking Questions 1. Why is the new grid computing system at Advance America much easier to install, manage, and maintain than its old system? In the older system of Advance America each of the centers had their own software and hardware installed in their premises, and every night all the centers around the country you to send their data to the main hub. Because of the growing numbers of the data and the centers around the country there was not enough time for all the data to be transferred to the main system plus the maintenance cost of the older system was much higher. In the new system Advance America switched to grid computing. “Grid computing is the collection of computer resources from multiple locations to reach a common goal.”{1} They installed a Client machine in every center which connects to the Web from a fault-tolerant server running Oracle database software. In this process may computers are working together to reduce the workload over the server which in turn helps in identifying and solving the problems much quicker even in real-time. {1} https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grid_computing 2. How might Advance America expand its system as the company outgrows it? Advance America is combining Oracle and a third-party database in to a centralized database. “Oracle Database 10g, and is using Oracle Real Application Clusters to distribute...

Oracle vs. Peoplesoft: a Hostile Tender Offer Analysis

...Introduction It all kicked off on 6 June 2003, when Oracle ambushed PeopleSoft with a hostile takeover bid valued at $5.1 billion just four days after PeopleSoft agreed to a $1.8 billion deal with J.D. Edwards. The acquisition fight lasted over 18 months and has become a staple in business and law school case studies. PeopleSoft specialized in Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software solutions. It was very strong in human resource software and other back-office functions, competing with SAP and Siebel; however, as the ERP space began to see dramatically reduced growth, PeopleSoft’s sales began to lag. Company leaders saw the acquisition of smaller J.D Edwards as a way to bolster and expand its business into enterprise management and supply chain solutions. Although this acquisition would place PeopleSoft in a better position to compete with market leaders, it never got a chance to enjoy the hype and excitement. Oracle announced its tender offer takeover of PeopleSoft and Oracle CEO, Larry Ellison, further announced that that the company would discontinue PeopleSoft products once the merger was complete (although product support for existing customers would continue). PeopleSoft faced significant challenges. The true intention of Oracle was unknown, and a personal conflict between the PeopleSoft and Oracle CEOs added complexity into the issue. The unwelcome tender offer cast a cloud of doubt upon PeopleSoft’s future and required that the board seriously consider...

Transaction Security in Single Ou

...Implementing Transactional Security in Single OU through form personalization Version 1.0 Overview: This document explains the procedure & step-by-step approach for implementing transactional security in single operating unit based on a segment in Chart of Accounts or any given criteria. White Paper: Implementing transactional security in single operating unit of Oracle Applications Version 11.5.10 Introduction: Transactional security has traditionally been one of the driving factors for businesses to opt of multiple operating units in Oracle Application Implementations. However, a large number of business establishments are now increasingly looking for transactional security even in the single operating unit. Transactional security in an operating unit can be of two types: ➢ To restrict access to transactional entry, say AP invoices etc, based on a specific chart of account or any given criteria ➢ To prevent users from viewing transactions, say AP invoices etc, with a specific chart of account or any given criteria even if the opt for a blind query by pressing Ctrl + F11 General Ledger security rules come handy in implementing the first part of the transactional security i.e. to prevent users from entering transactions with specific COA segments. However, GL security rules can be used only if the criterion is based on the COA segments. Also GL security rules have no effect on query mode. So viewing cannot be prevented with the help...
