Guide to Moscow

...to see that author didn’t treat article as seriously as it needed to be treated; his use of sarcasm belittles and demeans what the majority of people find an important environmental issue. However, I wanted to point out that every single bit of the article is rude. Even the title is creating a negative tension. “Stuff” – this word makes reader think to stop caring about this issue and just fill the tigers with stuffing once dead. “Long live extinction” – these words tease the reader with contradiction, and makes them think that everything is going well and extinction is impossible. I think that the use of this language in the title shows that the author is trying to manipulate the reader by making them agree with him through humour. Mr. Clarkson is not showing the whole picture of the problem of extinction. The reader thinks that everything is going well, and people have time to change it. However the problem of extinction is serious, and people should think about it now, because in the future it will be too late. As it was written in the article, tigers provide business; example for it is “demand for illegal tiger parts is booming”. I can agree with the fact of people need money to feed families, clothes and shelter themselves to survive. But I want to argue with this...

Amacing Grace

...The movie Amazing Grace open our eyes about how in the 18th century millions of men, women and children were taken from Africa and sold into slavery to England. It gives us a more detailed information about the horrible conditions slaves were brought into England and the process it took for William Wilberforce to overcome the English idea of having hundreds of slaves dying every day to satisfy their necessities. William’s main goal was the abolition of slavery which it took him almost all his life to achieve it. William Wilberforce was an ordinary man and he was able to overcome fear and fight for his believe. I do think the movie Amazing Grace is accurate according to the readings we have been doing because it’s a little related one with the other one; However, I don’t think the readings have given us much to write to compare it with the movie, but I did found a few things relevant that made my understanding of slavery much clearer. One of the parts that I read and where by watching the movie made my understanding better was William Pitt. William Pitt, the Prime Minister, he was William Wilberforce’s best friend. From the handout we can only know that he helped the British Empire (253), but the movie gives us way more information about him. He had a tremendous impact on William Wilberforce’s life. He was able to keep Wilberforce in good mental standing and also assisted in the eventual success of his projected law which banned the slave trade. Since the beginning that I found...

Nature from Withing

...The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass expresses various rhetorical strategies that the author, Frederick Douglass, employs in order to establish his argument regarding slavery. One such strategy, categorization, is used to categorize all slaveholders into an antagonistic role. Even though Douglass experienced moderately just slaveholders during his captivity in Maryland, Douglass' rhetoric allow readers to classify slaveholders as the enemy despite their infrequent generosity. For example, one of Douglass' masters forces Douglass to earn nine dollars a week through the shipbuilding trade; subsequently, Douglass is allotted little compensation. He states, " . . . I became quite restless. I could see no reason why I should, at the end of each week, pour the reward of my toil into the purse of my master."; furthermore, he states, "He was satisfied with nothing but the last cent." Thus, Douglass grows to detest his master; moreover, readers of The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass identify with Douglass' categorization. Frederick Douglass utilizes description as a tool to convey his rhetoric in addition to his use of categorization. In various instances throughout his narrative, Douglass depicts specific examples of the inhumane brutality associated with slavery. When Douglass was a young adolescent, two rampaging oxen narrowly miss gouging him and eventually become the cause for Douglass' master to whip him ferociously. Additionally, description is used to...

How Did Frederick Douglass Get His Freedom

... 3 The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, written in 1845, is an autobiography that elucidates the hardships of the author's life and his eventual escape from slavery. The book allows us to see what slavery was like for those who unfortunately experienced the horrendous event.4 The main conclusion found in the autobiography, presumably what led to Douglass’ escape, was the idea that liberty and freedom are inseparably linked. This conclusion allowed Douglass to come to the realization that without both of those ideas, he had nothing. Unfortunately, the liberty that Douglass possessed in his life led him through misfortune and anguish. The new profound knowledge that Douglass obtained throughout his life caused him pain, but in the end allowed him to commit a bold course of action of escaping from slavery. The start of Douglass’ liberty began with him learning to read and write. Though this seems as something that would allow Douglass to gain an advantage, it caused him more grief than good in his life. 7 While living on Master Hugh’s land, Douglass was taught to read--by accident--by his mistress. 5 Douglass believed her to be a: “kind and tenderhearted woman” (Pg 28). At the start of acquiring the ability to read, Douglass had the motivation to advance his knowledge and learn to write.2 He soon found that his new knowledge would give him “sorrow” and bring him massive, undeniably horrendous grief (Pg 28). 6 From his new knowledge, Douglass was able to understand what...

The Abolitionists Soul

...Christian Meyers The Abolitionists Soul In “Learning To Read and Write”, By Frederick Douglass, Douglas discusses how he seceded in learning to read and write, and the obstacles he faced during slavery in the early 1800’s. Furthermore, he speaks about the tactics he used to succeed, being that slave’s weren’t supposed to know how to read and write. As well, I see that he tells how his mistress, the wife of his owner, would get upset if he was caught reading a newspaper, or anything that she considered would be teaching of any sort to Douglas. Douglas states, “The first step had been taken”, which were powerful words to me because to him, the world had opened his eyes to something that was that he wasn’t suppose to know about in the times that he was living in. With his mistress teaching him the alphabet, combined with working at the shipyard placing letters on the timber, he utilized being exposed to that type of information, which was something that most slaves at the time, never thought about. Douglas shows that no matter what obstacles that are placed in front of you, there’s always away to make it work to your advantage, without fully exposing you intent. . The author faces many conflicts in his quest for knowledge. One of those conflicts is that at the time, Douglas felt that, “Learning to read had been a curse rather than a blessing.” Learning to read had showed him how other slaves had just settled for what they had been given, and that he was he was born to...
