Casting Out Demons Name of Jesus

It's true that every believer has authority to cast out evil spirits, but it's also necessary to understand the importance of using the name of Jesus when driving out unclean spirits. I heard of one evangelist who was preaching in an area where their pre-dominate god was Mohammad, and he did a demonstration up on stage... he took a woman who clearly had an evil spirit and a man who clearly had a need for physical healing. He said to them that he's going to first try to use the name of Mohammad to cast out the spirit and heal the man, then he'll use the name of Jesus and see which one works. He tried it with the name of Mohammad, and as you can guess, nothing happened. But when he used the name of Jesus, the evil spirit departed and the man was healed! Mark 16:17, "And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues." Notice how Jesus makes it clear that we are to cast out the spirits using His name.
Now if we look into the early church, we see Paul using Jesus' name to drive an evil spirit out of a woman: Acts 16:18, "And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour." Not only did the early church drive out evil spirits with Jesus' name, but many were also healed using the name of Jesus: Acts 4:30, "By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus." So if we try to use any other name or by not using the name of Jesus at all nothing will happen and it is most likely not inspired by God. How did Jesus' disciples go about casting out demons? Through His name. Luke 10:17 tells us, "And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name." How did the early

Exorcism: Beliefs & Practices

...about. This paper will explore the history and beliefs of exorcism and will also explore the role of the exorcist, which is the person who is intended to rid the affected of their demon(s) (Toner). History Exorcism, by definition and history is a strictly religious act or rite. It has strongly been related to the Catholic Church and Christian ceremonies and rituals. However, since there is the matter of demons and non-living beings involved, many consider exorcism to be a very superstitious belief as well and not necessarily just a religious one. In addition, there is history of exorcism present in Jewish tradition, ethnic religion and in the New Testament. Many believed (and still believe) that there was magic and superstition present during early exorcisms; however, this was not the case in the early years of exorcisms. According to a religious research article by Patrick Toner, “As is clear from testimonies referred to, no magical or superstitious means were employed, but in those early centuries, as in later times, a simple and authoritative adjuration addressed to the demon in the name of God, and more especially in the name of Christ crucified, was the usual form of exorcism” (Toner). According to Toner, exorcism can take on two different meanings. One is that exorcism is ‘the act of driving out, or...

Book of Mark Report

...Book of Mark The author of the book of Mark is Mark himself. Mark was also know as John Mark. Mark’s Hebrew name is John. The book of Mark was written to a Gentile, Roman audience. One of the main reasons why it is believed the book of Mark is written to a Gentile Roman audience is because there was little emphasis on Jewish law and customs. If the Jewish law and customs were to be mentioned, Mark would interpret their meaning for the reader. The purpose of the book of Mark is to show beyond a doubt that Jesus, even though He looks just like a man, is also God Himself. The theme of the book of Mark is that Jesus proved He is the Son of God through His ministry such as, casting out demons (Mark 1:21-28; 5:1-20; 9:14-29), healing many sick people (Mark 1:29-34), cleansing a leper (Mark 1:40-44), and completely restored men with (Mark 2:1-12; 3:1-6). The theme of Mark also highlights the death and resurrection of Jesus. The verse that has ministered to me is Mark 14:36, when Jesus said, “Abba, Father! All things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me. Nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will.” It reminds me that even though Jesus is God, He was still human also. He was asking God to take this burden off of Him. However, Jesus was in total submission to what God wanted to be done. This is a reminder to me as a son on God that I too must always be in complete submission to the will of the Father. Mark 11:23 says, “I assure you: if anyone says to this mountain...

...instrument that shows our Faithfulness or lack of, our Obedience or lack of, our Conduct , our Sight, and our hearing by the word of God. The canon is the infallible word of God, His instruction to us and communication withcommunication with us that we understand what and how he expects us to live. The Measuring stick of the Old Testament was hard for anyone to keep, because no one is without sin, we understand that God made provision for us and that now we are not measured by the law (Canon) but by our Faith, God’s Grace and our Purpose in Him. God is our measuring stick for our spiritual as well as natural lives, because it is according to grace through our faith that we receive the blessings of Abraham, and though we were yet sinners Jesus came and died for us that we might have the right to eternal life. “For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God and they shall be My...

...Matthew illustrate Jesus’ teachings on adultery, fasting, giving alms, praying, judging others, and false prophets? The Lord journey through Galilee “teaching in their synagogues and preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom (Matt. 4: 23). The Gospels of the Kingdom are the most important subject in the New Testament. The Gospel and deeds of Jesus Christ were understood in Matthew illustration. The main teaching of the Sermon is not so much the kingdom of Heaven and repentance which are presupposed, but the new piety versus the old piety of the scribes and Pharisees. The Sermon encourages the Christian to apply his own life through these principles of piety. Jesus condemns adultery in the heart. When I think of this illustration of plunking the eye is not to be taken literally; neither should the illustration in the Bible of cutting of the right hand. These illustrations in the bible suggest the uprooting of evil thoughts fro ones heart. In Christian ethics; the only legal and sacred relation between man and woman is their union in wedlock. Every other sex relation and practice is against the principles of the Gospel . As stated in Matthew 5: 27-30 the scriptures said, “Thou shalt not commit adultery. Adultery is a weakness of the people of the past and still remains as such among the people of the Christian era. In the past, customs and laws legalized adultery and fornication through polygamy. Solomon with many “wives” was not committing adultery. Jesus stated that adultery...

The Significance of Jesus Christ

...The Significance of Jesus Christ UFDN 3001 December, 2006 The Significance of Jesus Christ The purpose of this paper is to attempt to answer the questions ‘What is the significance of Jesus’ birth, life, death, resurrection and ascension?’ and ‘How dramatically would Christianity change if someone could prove that Jesus never did become a human being’. The Birth Throughout the entire Old Testament God was worshipped as a God. Offerings were made, and God was happy, giving covenants. People sinned and God punished them. Priests talked to God and people attempted to serve him. But nobody knew God. So God made a plan, he began to tell people that someday they would know him. In fulfillment of prophecy he did come. Now if God were to come to earth today, people would expect something amazing, something that would tell them he is God. Essentially that is what happened more than 2000 years ago. God spoke to a virgin named Mary and told her “You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus” (Luke 1:31). As most peoples knowledge of procreation, it is impossible to become with child if a woman is a virgin, unless it is the Son of God. The creation of Jesus was a miracle, emphasizing Gods involvement. The Life The life of Jesus was humble yet very significant in that he wanted to relate to people. By relating he lived and by living he experienced love, pain, hunger, exhaustion, joy, frustration...

Arguments for Gods Existance

...different God’s ruled the ancient years because of what people thought to be true of the world had to be upheld by a leader or a higher spirit, object or being that made all good happenings exist. Some religions actually share common beliefs and some oppose the fact of whom or what the number one God is or does. For example, the Buddhist has a belief in Siddhartha Gautama. They believe the teaching of this name and to them this may be their God. Siddhartha Gautama teaches them to realize that there is no rebirth after we die and everything should be a self mind controlled focus on your life. As for Christianity we argue these beliefs because the evidence we articulate overwhelms our faith and strengthen our minds to a logical understanding of ontology through what we experience and who we know as God. There are a few things that most of the general population share. It is the fact that we are all human beings who have a belief in some one or something, and when we find our worldview we tend to see life from a new aspect. Christians may tend to live whole-heartedly for Jesus Christ and share to others of the amazing joy and love that changed their hearts and lives because of their faith of what he does to change lives in general. Others may develop a world view that can separate their hart from the truth of God for they are revealed to their own religion alone by God. The existence of God is presented in four different philosophical arguments that support a certain conception...

...Week 7 Assignment: Christianity, History and Practice your name here HUM/130 2/12/02 Terry Barnes Sources: www.biography.com/people/jesus-christ-9354382 www.theopedia.com/Church_history our textbook Jesus Christ has many great stories behind him. These stories are called miracles, depending on who you ask. Yet, one thing cannot be denied, and that is that Jesus Christ did exist and his influence is still felt by the Catholic faith. Jesus Christ was born in approximately 6 AD in Bethlehem, from his parents Mary and Joseph. Yet, according to the faith, his actual father is God. Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit, as Mary was a virgin. Joseph, his legal father, was a carpenter who made furniture with his hands. Jesus would also become a carpenter later on in his life. Some of these points are argued between religions, yet I am not going to touch on it in this paper. His childhood is shrouded in mystery, as there are little to no records of his life during his childhood and early teenage years. Many argued that he did not initially except his role or fate as God’s only son and lived a life like any other would at the time. You can even look in the Bible for such a hypothesis, as the stories of his life suddenly jump from age 16 to age 30. Where are the missing texts that chronicle his life during these missing fourteen years? This is what many claim that he rejected his “destiny” or found it all too big to cope with. Later...

Jesus and Mohammed

...Jesus and Mohammed Cassie Osborn 5/24/2014 HUM/130 Alice Aud Jesus and Mohammed Jesus and Mohammed both represent major figures in the Christianity and Muslim religions respectively. These two religions are completely different but each figure is of equal importance to their respective religions from the way each of their followers pray down to the holidays each celebrate. Jesus is of the Christian religion and Mohammed is of the Islam religion. These two figure are easily the two biggest, most recognized names in religion today due to the billions of combined believers in each faith. It is considered across most Christianity sects that Jesus was born on December 25th in the city of Bethlehem. Christians believe this so heavily it has been induced into their doctrine, but there is some dispute between other religious groups. There are scholars that believe he was born in spring or fall, or even that he was born in Nazareth and not Bethlehem. That being said, December 25th is the date that Christians hold to be his birthday and the day itself has become very important to his believers. The Virgin Mary was Jesus’s mother and she was married to a carpenter named Joseph. It is widely believed that because Mary was a virgin, she was impregnated with Jesus through the Holy Spirit or God, making him God’s only son. At this time, Jewish individuals had been awaiting the Messiah, which the old prophecies had promised them was coming. This Messiah would be in some form...

Exegesis of the Gospels

...28-36 talks about “The Transfiguration” of Jesus that happened on a mountain with the presence of Peter, John, and James. Before the event, several other acts involving Jesus had occurred. First, Christ sent his disciples to proclaim the Kingdom of God to the people upon given authority and power of casting out demons. Their mission was expected to spread the word in every home they were welcomed. The results of such a mission caused confusion to the Galilean ruler, Herod Antipas. He was wondering who Jesus was, because he was given many names like John the Baptist, Elijah or some of the past prophets who had risen from the dead (“The Transfiguration (Luke 9:27-36)”). The other event before the transfiguration was the feeding of five thousand people. When the disciples had returned from their mission as seen earlier, they relocated to a quiet place for a talk with Jesus; however, a multitude of people followed them upon their prevue to the information. Jesus used five loaves of bread and two fish to feed them after a day’s preaching. Later, when they were alone with Jesus, following the miracle Peter gives his declaration on what he thinks who Jesus was. The last event of the transfiguration was the prediction of Jesus about his death and warning the disciples not to inform people of his true form and nature. After the transfiguration, Jesus was also involved in many other activities. First, He heals a boy who is possessed by a demon upon intervention from the father. He also...

Battle for Your Mind

... I don't know about you but I am in a battle. Amen? I suspect you are too if you are a believer. Somebody said if you hadn't met the devil, you are probably going the same direction he is. Amen? So if you are going toward God, you are going to have the devil try to stand between you and God and not the devil literally but demonic influence, demons. We studied last seek how to overcome the devil and we spoke about that and we spoke about how Jesus had vanquished the devil. The devil has been vanquished but the devil has not been banished. That is, the Bible says that God now has given us authority over him and power over him but he is not yet in the lake of fire. There is no need for any believer to be defeated by Satan because the Bible says we have been given the victory, the victory has been won and we don't fight for victory, we fight from victory. But nevertheless, we are still in a battle. Now look at Second Corinthians 10 and verse 3, "FOR THOUGH WE WALK IN THE FLESH, WE DO NOT WAR AFTER THE FLESH. (FOR THE WEAPONS OF OUR WARFARE ARE NOT CARNAL, BUT MIGHTY THROUGH GOD TO THE PULLING DOWN OF STRONG HOLDS) CASTING DOWN IMAGINATIONS, AND EVERY HIGH THING THAT EXALTETH ITSELF AGAINST THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD, AND BRINGINGINTO CAPTIVITY EVERY THOUGH TO THE OBEDIENCE OF CHRIST." Now the picture here is that of your mind and your mind is likened unto a trophy over which there is a great struggle. God is struggling for your...

Christian and the Jews

...Introduction Christianity came from Judaism. Judaism is a Jewish religion which views originated from the Old Testament. The Old Testament is broken down into five categories: the Torah meaning the “Law” containing the five books of Moses,” History: the book of Joshua to the book of Esther, Wisdom: the book of Job to the book of Song of Solomon, Prophetic Books: the book Isaiah to the book of Daniel and the last twelve books are the Minor Prophets: the book of Hosea to the book of Malachi. The Old Testament books are pivotal to the birth of the New Testament because if God did not keep his promises to the Old Testament patriarchs Christianity would have not been born. In this research I will focus on early Christianity and how it began. Next I will speak upon how the gospel went from Judaism to a world religion. I will then talk about the persecution of the Jewish people by Christians. Lastly I will discuss the conflict between the two. Early Christianity In the first century there were four main religious sects made up of the Palestinian Jews: the Sadducees, Pharisees, Essenes, and the Zealots. The Sadducees were religious conservative priest and wanted to maintain the authenticity of the Hebrew teachings, they also did not believe in the resurrection of the dead or an afterlife. The Pharisees unlike the Sadducees took a more liberal mindset towards the Mosaic Law, they allowed multiple interpretations of the Torah, they accepted oral tradition of the Torah (the...

Life of Jesus

...The Life of Jesus Christ The story of Jesus begins even before he was born. We may think how can this be, but it’s true and John the fisherman, a disciple of Jesus, puts it this way: ‘In the very beginning, before anything else existed, the Word (Jesus) existed. The Word was with God and the Word was God.’ Mankind had forgotten the existence of God completely and had sinned beyond pardoning. Therefore, God sent His son Jesus Christ into the world to remind us that there is God, to set aside those from doing errant and give eternal life to whosoever believed in Him. The Bible says, ``If you keep on sinning, it shows that you belong to Satan … But the Son of God (Jesus) came to destroy these works of the devil. The person who has been born into God`s family does not make a practice of sinning, because now God`s life is in him``(1 John 3:8-9). Christ Jesus came into the world to save us from bondage and Satan.  God chose the right time for Jesus to come  God prearranged that the time was right for His Son (Jesus) to come into the world. It was the right time in the world and was also the right time in God`s great plan. From the beginning of the world, God had prepared for this. This should both surprise and impress us, because God showed his love for men.  Galatians 4:4, 5 tell that, “But when the right time finally came, God sent His own Son. He came as the son of a human mother and lived under the Jewish Law, to redeem those who were under the Law, so that...

The History of Jesus

...History of Jesus and Muhammad hum130 March 20, 2011 Michael Emmart The History of Jesus and Muhammad The angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord." --Luke 2:10-11 The religion Christianity was founded on the life and teachings Of Jesus Christ. Around or just before the Common Era, about 2000 years ago Jesus was born in a small town called Bethlehem. Jesus was born unto a devout Jewess by the name of Mary and a carpenter named Joseph. Jesus was conceived by a miracle of the Holy Spirit before Mary and Joseph had any sexual relationship. Jesus was born in Bethlehem because the Roman emperor stated that all families register for a census in their ancestral hometowns. Joseph and Mary made the long difficult trip to Bethlehem, only to find that all the inns were full, with no inns to stay at, Mary gave birth to Jesus in a stable among the animals. The Gospels do not talk a lot about Jesus’ early life, but some information can be traced back to some references elsewhere. Jesus was from a town called Nazareth, where he probably worked with his father and trained to be a carpenter. At the age of twelve Jesus wander away from his parents into Jerusalem to discuss religion in the temple; the rabbis were very impressed on the knowledge, understanding and answers when discussing the Torah. When his parents finally found him, Jesus asked...
