Karen Cushman did a good job with representing what they did for pain relief during the middle ages. Birdy grounded peony root to soothe her father's pain (Catherine, Called Birdy). During the middle ages peony wasn’t just used for pain relief but it was also used to prevent bad dreams but the plant is poisonous and can sometimes be fatal (Medical Herb Info). Peony was also used to relieve headaches but was mostly used for pain relief (Everyday Life In The Middle Ages). So like Birdy did in the novel they did use peony root to soothe pain during the middle ages. Birdy mixed chamomile and honey to relieve headaches ( Catherine, Called Birdy ). In my research honey and chamomile was used to relieve headaches. Honey and chamomile wasn’t just used for headaches honey was also used to loosen the stomach and they would put it in scars to help heal and chamomile was used for soap because of the sweet smell ( Medieval Use of Herbs ).
