Catherine Astrid Salome Freeman, better known as Cathy Freeman, was an Aboriginal sprinter who won gold medals in the 2000 Olympic Games. She was the first athlete to hold up the black, yellow and red flag in any Olympic! Rather than running for Australia, she was running for who she really was; a true Aborigine at heart. She has earned the love and respect of Australia and in no time became one of Australia’s favourite!

Catherine was born on the 16th of February, 1973 in Slade Point, Mackay, Queensland. Her name was very meaningful: Catherine- Greek for pure, Astrid- German for star and Salome- Hebrew for peace. Her first ‘official’ relationship was with her manager, Nick Bideau. It ended due to some conflict surrounding money issues and this case even went all the way to court! After the ending of this relationship, Cathy realised it was going to be hard for her to find a person who was in love with her and not her earnings. She then went on to date Alexandra Bodecker, who worked as a Nike executive. Cathy was so in love she took a break from the track to focus on Bodecker’s health. Something terrible must’ve happened as Freeman announced their separation in 2003. This woman-version-of-Usain-Bolt found another man, this time the Australian actor, Joel Edgerton. She met him during the TV Week Logies in 2002. They shortly announced that their relationship hadn’t been the smoothest and confirmed the relationship had ended in 2005.
