CCNA Notes
Introduction
Cisco offers two options for obtaining the CCNA certification:
 

Pass Exam 640-802 OR Pass Exam 640-822 AND Exam 640-816

While you can use these notes to prepare for either exam, the notes are geared towards passing the single exam. I recommend you study all of the material and take the single exam option rather than taking two exams. The OSI Model
As you study this section, answer the following questions:
     

What is the OSI model and why is it important in understanding networking? How does the third OSI model layer relate to administering routers? Which OSI model layer is concerned with MAC addresses? What protocols correspond to the Presentation and Session layers? What is the difference between the TCP and UDP protocols? What is the EIA/TIA 232 protocol concerned with?

This section covers the following exam objectives:
  

103. Use the OSI and TCP/IP models and their associated protocols to explain how data flows in a network 105. Describe the purpose and basic operation of the protocols in the OSI and TCP models 110. Identify and correct common network problems at layers 1, 2, 3 and 7 using a layered model approach

OSI Model Facts The OSI model classifies and organizes the tasks that hosts perform to prepare data for transport across the network. You should be familiar with the OSI model because it is the most widely used method for understanding and talking about network communications. However, remember that it is only a theoretical model that defines standards for programmers and network

...Tell me about yourself. My name is . I attend University of New York. I have completed the associate degree program of Network System Administration. I am pursing to finish the B.A. degree in Network Communication Management in June, and concentration in Cisco. I am 33, no kids, dedicated and ambitious in completing the B.A. degree, and initiating my career in the Network/IT field. My hobbies are working out, studying and preparing myself for future exams, and mastering my hands-on skills in configuring Cisco devices. I also like researching on future technology. I have a passion for sports, computers, and network infrastructure. Right now I am building a wired/wireless LAN in my home to practice on future exams. WHAT DID YOU EJOYED MOST/LEAST ABOUT YOUR PREVIOUS JOB? WHY? Meeting new people, and working with them and witness how they think and reacted in certain situation. That allowed me to experience and witness what to do when certain situations approached at any given time. The most I enjoyed about my previous job was they allowed me to do so many things. Why? My manager called me a floater. Both of them informed my position wasn’t created for other interns, because they both noticed I don’t like to stand still, I like to be mobile and eager to learn. When I started out I wondered why I was in helpdesk, but helped the remote department upgrade PC components and OS, upgrading routers configuration templates. I did this for 6 months. I went to my manager and asked can...

...Happiness What exactly is happiness and what can engender it? Though it is defined as the condition of being content, many people may have their own ideas of happiness. It is commonly thought of as having a lot of money, power, or fame. But can these things actually make people happy? Happiness is actually more than what most people think it is. It can be mysterious and exclusive, sought after by many, but not gained by all. Happiness can come from many different sources but perhaps the most closer ones are friends and family. Happiness resides not in transient possessions or gold, but instead in the conviction that we are loved. Happiness, which is often thought of as a fairly simple concept, is actually more than what people assume it is. Although this natural mood or feeling is desired by numerous people, it is very exclusive and therefore, for some, extremely difficult to obtain. Happiness is frequently sought after but not gained. Although not everybody accepts the utilitarian axiom that happiness is the most essential value, the desirability of happiness is almost undisputed. Happiness is necessary for a successful life. It is absolutely essential to our health and well-being. Statistics have proven that happiness is beneficial to the human race. Happiness is one of the most important aspects of a person’s life. Although people can get their happiness from many disparate sources, the most prevalent derivations that engender happiness are family and friends. Friendship...

...Economic Comparisons of Mutually Exclusive Alternatives Objective: To evaluate and compare mutually exclusive alternatives and select the most economical. The comparison is based on the lifecycle benefits and costs of each alternative over a specified study period. The Minimum Attractive Rate of Return (MARR) The lowest interest rate acceptable to the investor. Comparing Mutually Exclusive Alternatives The most common evaluation techniques include 1. Present worth analysis, 2. Annual (periodic) worth analysis, 3. Future worth analysis, 4. Internal rate-of-return, 5. Benefit-cost ratio, and 6. Payback period method. Below is a discussion of each of these techniques. Present Worth (PW) Analysis Objective: To evaluate and compare mutually exclusive alternatives based on the equivalent netpresent worth of the lifecycle cash flows for each alternative at a given minimum attractive rate of return (MARR). • The net present worth is computed as Net PW = PW(Revenues) – PW(Costs) • The cash flows include all life-cycle revenues and costs, i.e., all revenues and costs over the service life of the project or investment. • A zero or positive “Net PW” indicates a “profitable” or “economical” project or investment. • A positive “Net PW” indicates that the investment or project has an annual rate of return greater than the MARR. • A zero “Net PW” indicates that the investment or project has an annual rate of return exactly equal to MARR. •...

Due to space limitations, five employees currently share single cubicles…at the same time. While this is great for team building, these space limitations are now impacting business productivity. NuggetLabs has now leased an additional office building roughly 20Km from their headquarters location. While this office will eventually connect to the HQ office, it will initially be set up independently. NuggetLabs Industries has heard rumors of your ninja-like network consultation skills and has agreed to pay you an excessive amount of money to design and build their network infrastructure. Gathering Information To help guide this initial configuration, you‘ve assembled a list of requirements based on various meetings with management. * The new office will initially house 75 employees, each with their own Cisco IP Phone and PC. This office may eventually scale to 200 employees over 5 years. * The Windows admins are planning to install a new pair of redundant servers at the new office. ...Study Guide CISCO SYSTEMS NETWORKING Academy CCNA 2 Chapter 1 WANs and Routers One major characteristic of a wide-area network (WAN) is that the network operates beyond the local LAN's geographic scope. It uses the services of carriers, such as regional Bell operating companies (RBOCs), Sprint, and MCI. WANs use serial connections of various types to access bandwidth over wide-area geographies. By definition, the WAN connects devices that are separated by wide areas. WAN devices include the following: • • • • • • Routers, which offer many services, including internetworking and WAN interface ports Switches, which connect to WAN bandwidth for voice, data, and video communication Modems, which interface voice-grade services and channel service units/digital service units Channel service units/data service units (CSUs/DSUs) that interface T1/E1 services and Terminal Adapters/Network Termination 1 (TA/NT1s) TA/NT1s that interface Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) services Communication servers, which concentrate on dial-in and dial-out user communication Concept Questions 1. A WAN is used to interconnect local-area networks (LANs) that are typically separated by a large geographic area. A WAN operates at the OSI reference model physical and data link layers. The WAN provides for the exchange of data packets/frames between routers/bridges and the LANs that they support. Draw a WAN that includes three LANs. 1 of 116 CCNA 2 Chapter 1 WANs and Routers 2.
