“Politics and Public Policy” In the reading, it states that 84 percent of cell phone users agree that using a cell phone while behind the wheel increases a chance of an accident but then again it states 61 percent of those people admitted to using a cell phone while driving. Yes it does increase chances of an accident but how can someone enforce a law that cannot be forced? I do not find the law to be unconstitutional because I agree, not to the fact that the government is telling me that I cannot use my cell phone while driving, but that there is a decrease in reaction time to a possible accident. With that said, I do not believe the laws will nor can be enforced to end cell phone use while driving in any way possible. I have recognized that accidents in the school zone around Ellison High School have decreased because of the law but I know plenty of people that still text when the law states not to in the area. Some people just do not care what the law says and there is nothing the state can do to completely enforce. Yes there are double fines if stopped for a ticket but not every Killeen officer will be able to recognize someone using their cell phone while driving. While I talk about other people, I must admit that I also text and drive. Driving for 5 years now and having a cell phone basically all my life, I can say I have mastered operating my phone without actually looking at it. The AT&T commercials do make me wonder if I should put my phone away while I drive but it turned into a habit. As soon as I get in the car, I plug my phone up to listen to music and put it in my lap that way it’s not far to use it. Because of this habit, I do not believe a law will make me change. Its bad to say but if I got caught using my cell phone when I wasn’t supposed to, then yes I probably would begin to put it away.
The idea of the law keeps a lot of people happy as they know the government is in attempt to keep people off of their phones which hand-in-hand may decrease the death rate behind the wheel.

Is It Dangerous to Drive and Use Cell Phones

...Is It Dangerous to Drive and Use Cell Phones Michelle Roberts RES/110 May 4, 2010 Is It Dangerous to Drive and Use Cell Phones The technology of cellular phones has come a long way since the first cell phone was introduced to the public on April 3, 1973 by Motorola. This cell phone was called the “DynaTAC”. It weighed 2.5 pounds and only had three cell phone features dialing, listening, and talking and only had a talk time of 35 minutes that took 10 hours to charge. Although the “DynaTAC” was introduced in 1973, it was not put on the market until 1983.The cost of this cellular was $3,500. Today’s cell phones are much smaller and most of them weigh less than three ounces. They have a variety of features. To name a few; built in cameras, video capturing, text messaging, touch screens, and mobile web for less than a fraction of the cost of the “DynaTAC”. The price of cell phones today can run anywhere from $50 to $600. Studies done by Davis, Payne, and Mozee (2010) “Cell phones are now widespread, with more than 255 million wireless subscribers in the United States, comprising 84% of the population. In 2007, cell phone users spent 2.1 trillion minutes talking on cell phones and transmitted 363 billion SMS (“text messages”) over the course of the year.” With so many people using cell phones one can only imagine how many people drive while using their cell phones. Therefore, is it dangerous to drive and use cell phones? Should there be stricter laws banning or putting...

The Use of Cell Phones While Driving

...Outlaw the Use of Handheld Cell Phones While Driving CL English 111.4 November 9, 2009 Abstract Cell phones should be banned to make for a safer country. When considering whether or not cell phones should be allowed to be used while driving, generates two different positions. The use of a cell phone while a car is in motion should be made illegal throughout the United States with exceptions of emergencies. Cell phones are a distraction and our brain is better at concentrating on one thing at a time, while using a cell phone you have a slower reaction time and it will reduce the amount of vehicle accidents. Some argue that cell phones cause just as much distraction as many other things such as the radio and that cell phones are needed for emergencies. Others argue that a law banning the use will help decrease vehicle accidents and increase peoples concentration on driving. Outlaw the use of Handheld Cell Phones While Driving “500,000 passenger vehicle drivers are talking on hand-held cell phones, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration” (O’Rourke, 2004). When considering whether or not cell phones should be allowed while driving, causes deep feelings to be expressed on both sides of the issue. Some argue that cell phones cause just as much distraction as many other things, such as the radio. Others argue that such a law will help decrease vehicle accidents and increase the driver’s concentration on driving. Our first concern should be the safety of...

Cell Phone Use While Driving

...Cell Phone Use While Driving The new technology of cell phones has helped advance the world in which we live. There are over 100 million people in the United States that have and use cell phones. Driver distraction due to cell phone usage is a plague that is causing more and more car accidents every year. People quickly forget that driving is a privilege and not a right. What are different states doing about it? Should it be a concern of ours? Did you know that car crashes are the leading cause of death in the U.S.? The statistics of car accidents due to cell phone usage is a hot topic for lawmakers, cell phone manufacturers, and concerned citizens. A study by the National Safety Council found that 8 out of 10 people use their cell phones while driving and that 1 out of 5 text while driving. Cell phones are a factor in six percent of all car crashes which equates to 636,000 crashes, 330,000 injuries, 12,000 serious injuries and 2,600 deaths. These are shocking statistics that easily can be prevented by refusing to use your phone while driving. Research done by the Iowa Civic Analysis Network said, “National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that distracted driving contributes to 25% of all police-reported traffic accidents. The most common distraction is cell phone use, which increases the likelihood of an accident by approximately 300%.” One of our problems as Americans is that we like to multi-task. On average Americans spend twenty five minutes...

Cell Phone Use While Driving

...Cell Phone Use While Driving In today’s technologically advanced world it is hard to find anyone without a cell phone in their purse or pocket. Cell phones are being used more frequently during normal activities, such as at the dinner table, in the movie theater, and in the car. The use of a cell phone in a moving vehicle raises the risk of collision 3 to 6.5 times greater than that of an undistracted driver (Seo &Torabi, 2004). The increase of 16-24 year olds using cell phones combined with their lack of driving experience creates a deadly cocktail of inevitable consequences. These consequences are closely related to those of a person driving well above the legal blood-alcohol-limit (Seo &Torabi, 2004). The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) seems to feel that cell phone use isn’t that dangerous. The NHTSA states “only 18 percent of the 5,474 people killed and 5 percent of the 448,000 injured in crashes were because of cell phone use” (www-nrd.nhtsa.dot.gov/Pubs/811379.pdf). Eight-teen percent, that’s 985 people dead each year, if the number of drivers using cell phones stays the same. That’s 985 times The United States takes a step backwards to getting closer to finding a cure for cancer, because each one of those 985 people has the potential to do just that. Oh, don’t forget the five percent of the 448,000 or 22,400 people that were only injured. Injured, what exactly does that entail? Injuries sustained from motor vehicle accidents...

...Prohibiting the Use of a Cell Phone While Operating a Motor Vehicle Gerald J. Calca Jr. Post University Prohibiting the Use of a Cell Phone While Operating a Motor Vehicle Statistics show that from 2003 to 2008 the number of accidents that were caused by drivers using a cell phone increased from 636,000 to an astounding 1.6 million. (CBSNews, 2010). This a growing trend that shows the use of cells phones while driving is an extremely dangerous activity which has had severe consequences for many individuals, and therefore should be prohibited to help ensure the safety on our roads. There are too many things that can go wrong when driving a car without any distractions. Taking your attention away from the road for any reason is not only a detriment to yourself but to others as well. While most people realize that driving a vehicle is a privilege and responsibility that should be taken very seriously, there are some people that believe that the convenience factor outweighs the risks. According to K. Lissy, J. Cohen, M. Park, and J. Graham in their report Cellular Phone Use While Driving: Risks and Benefits (2000), some of the benefits that people find in using cell phones when driving are both personal and communal. Being able to use a cell phone while driving helps people reduce unnecessary trips, shorten the duration of their trips, and overall minimizes the amount of time spent on the road (Lissy, Cohen, Park, & Graham, Jul 2000, p. 41). An example of this would...

The Use of Personal Cell Phones in the Clinical Setting

...The Use of Personal Cell Phones in the Clinical Setting University of Louisiana at Lafayette Kevin Besse, RN, MSN, CNE The use of technology in the clinical practice has rapidly increased in delivering quality patient-centered care. Technological advances in the last decade have transformed the manner in which healthcare is delivered. “Nursing is a complex profession which utilizes the integration of knowledge, skills and competencies to provide patient care and improve outcomes. Nurses are knowledge workers who are responsible for the delivery of patient care. Accessing online evidence-based resources may be challenging for nurses as computers are often located away from where patient care occurs – at the bedside” (Johnson, 2008). Since the development of the personal handheld device (PDA), access to any online reference material or clinical guideline at the tip of one’s fingers will make all the difference in delivering quality patient-centered care. The technological advances have also brought a new field of studying in the nursing profession, formally known as informatics. Today, the technology that is available to the general public is astounding. The advances that have been made over the years have dramatically changed the general public’s personal lifestyle. ...Regina Dodson Student ID AC1400470 SP180.1.1 Principles of Public Speaking Assignment 06_06 02-07-2014 I Believe and Persuaded the Use of Cell Phones Should Be Mandatorily Banned Nationwide To Prevent Unnecessary Distractive Driving Banning the use of cell phones should be made mandatory nationwide while driving because it is a one of the nations’ top killers in America. Driving while being distracted kills thousands of people every year. Yet many drivers think they are good at managing both tasks so they continue to text behind the wheel. A car travels approximately 100 yards in less than the 5 seconds it takes to read a text. Texting distracts people from driving properly by diverting their attention to their cell phone, instead of focusing on the road. Furthermore, studies show that texting is as dangerous as driving while intoxicated. Subjects are found to be mentally impaired while driving and chatting on a mobile device as when they are under the influence. These are the top reasons why I believe and am convinced that driving while on a cell phone should be banned in America. Cell Phone Usage as Top Killer in America National statistics show that cell phone usage while driving has become one of the nation’s top killers on our roadways today. According to the Texting and Driving Safety Statistics an average of 1,600,000 accidents are reported each year due to texting while driving. Nearly 25 percent of all accidents nationwide, 11 percent of which are teenagers...

...between Cell Phone Use and Brain Cancer” According to a Baltimore neurologist, Christopher J. Newman, Motorola is the cause a life frightening tumor that has developed overtime in his brain. Newman sues Motorola for “a direct and proximate result of the defective and unreasonably dangerous condition of the relevant products” (Parascandola). The court system and scientist are feuding on the matter of using scientific data as evidence in court cases. The courts argue whether or not the data is applicable and reliable. Hence, the association of cellular phone radiation and brain cancer is still under dispute on whether there is a correlation in between the two. Worldwide there are over 4.3 billion cell phone users (web). This substantial number of cell phone users also causes generous amount of radiation to be generated. The radiation that is discharged through these devices is to as radio frequency (RF) energy. The measure of RF energy that is taken in by users is known as its Specific Absorption Rate or SAR. SAR is what researchers use to compare radiation given off by cell phones to cancerous tumors. Scientist research the amount of SAR that is exposed in different mobile phone models. For a phone to pass the Federal Communication Commission its SAR must be less than 1.6 W/kg (web). Researchers from CNET in 2007 did a study to show the quantity of radiation given off by various cell phone models. Figure 1 shows the results. |TEN HIGHEST SAR CELL PHONES ...

Why Banning the Use of Cell Phones While Driving Should Be Mandatory Nationwide.

...It is dangerous both through anecdotal and hard scientific fact. The distraction of texting, twitting and answering a call is the main cause of accident on the road. Be responsible for someone’s life, put down the phone Introduction The weight of scientific evidence to date suggests that use of cellphone while driving does create a safety risk. Excess use of the cellphone can cause accidents because the driver might run through a stoplight and into oncoming vehicles, knock down pedestrians and or cause fatality towards their self. According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), “distracted driving is becoming the new DUI; it is becoming an epidemic.” This epidemic is causing the life of millions per year worldwide. If we all take that stand to safety and switch off phones while driving the life saved might be your owe., The main cause of distraction while driving is the use of texting on the cellphones; even though the call or text is essential and the lost of a client or business venture maybe the outcome. The best suggestion would be for the person to get off the main road and find a parking lot or emergency lot, and then check the message, but that will not be followed, so the safes way is to ban cellphones use. In calling for a ban on all use of electronic devices while driving, the NTSB cited a series of fatal accidents in which were deemed distractions.
