Giving cell phones to tweens is a controversial topic. While there are valid points on both sides of this argument, I believe that children eight to twelve years old should be allowed to have cell phones as long as they are responsible, follow clear rules and have adult supervision because 1) they help children stay in touch with their parents, 2) they can learn to safely access social media and the internet, 3) they can provide information and entertainment for kids with adult boundaries which will lead to responsible cell phone use in their adulthood.
Cell phones can help children stay in touch with their parents when they are not with them because of activities or divorce. This gives kids the option of contacting their parent and asking

For Cell Phones It is difficult to exist in today’s society without being influenced by the dramatic increase of the technology use and especially the use of cell phones. The cell phone market is becoming more saturated and competitive. Thus, marketers tend to look for new segment groups, study them, and eventually influence their decisions. Due to the rise reliance on technology, much of the communication between teens occurs through the digital use, particularly through their cell phones and smartphones. More than 65% of American preteens have their own cell phones. (Solomon, 2011)...

Tweens

...Professor Erickson English 1301 December 8, 2013 Tweens: Ten Going on Sixteen When children are first born they are as innocent and as precious as jewels. Their parents never think for a minute that my child is going to be imperfect or going to grow up too fast. In today’s society children are growing up at a very rapid rate. Kay S. Hymowitz wrote a story on young children growing up before their years. Hymowitz story is titled Tween: Ten Going on Sixteen. In her story it is very accurate and very effective about today’s children. There are many different reasons on why children grow up so fast and the influences that surround them. Hymowitz story Tweens is very effective about many reasons but mainly because of the celebrity influence and media, the people they hang out with are twice their age, and also because they’re put in a forced upon situation. To begin with, in the story Tweens it addresses how young children grow up faster because of the celebrity influence and media. It states that generally children from the ages of 8-10 years of age are in the mind set of 13-16 year old teenagers. (Hymowitz Pg. 3.) The media’s influence on children now and days are horrific. It sucks to say but there is a sense of media that targets toward little girls that sucks them into a more advanced type of lifestyle. Children cannot be little kids anymore and enjoy that time because of the media. The media and the celebrities are always in the spot light and are all about high fashion...

For most, bullying happened at school, but it can happen at any time in one’s life. Advances in the internet and technology have brought about some positive changes in our lives. However, in the technical world that we live in today with our kids having access to cell phones and the cyber social media, it has turned into a deadly form of bullying known as cyber bullying. However, cyber bullying is something that should concern everyone. There are far too many children suffering from the effects of cyber bullying and as a society we all need to take steps to ensure our children are safe. No child should have to face the type of harassment that causes them to suffer feelings of depression, isolation, low self-esteem, humiliation, anxiety, and thoughts of suicide. Cyber bullying has some rather unique characteristics that are different from traditional bullying: * Anonymity As bad as the "bully" on the playground may be, he or she can be readily identified and potentially avoided. On the other hand, the child who cyber bullies is often anonymous. The victim is left wondering...

10 Good Study Habits to Help Your Child Succeed in the New School Year

...t’s that time of year again. Soon we’ll be trading beach days for school days and once the shiny freshness of the first few days of school wears off, it will be time to get down to business. Particularly for students heading to middle school or high school, the homework assignments become tougher, workloads get heavier and staying ahead of the curve becomes more of a challenge. As a parent, you may ask, “What is the ‘secret behind the A’?” While having effective study skills may be overlooked on the academic journey, we’ve seen this be the tipping point in making good students into great students. Here are 10 good study habits for your tween or teen to help set him or her up for a productive school year. 1. Get Organized. Between homework, tests and extracurricular activities, it’s all too easy for things to slip through the cracks. A planner can help your child keep everything organized and students should write down assignments, appointments and to-do lists. Ask him or her to review items in the planner at both the beginning and end of the day to stay on track. 2. Know the Expectations. Students shouldn’t have any surprises when it come to how and what they will be graded on. By middle school and high school, most teachers will provide a course outline or syllabus, which can serve as a guide for the semester. If expectations aren’t clear, don’t wait until a bad report card comes in the mail. Your student should feel comfortable approaching teachers with...

Are You Aware of What Your Child Is Doing Online?

...of life with teenagers. With websites like facebook, twitter, linked in, and myspace we can update everything we do day to day in a matter of seconds. We can also post pictures, tell who are with us, and inform people of our location. These are all excellent things if they are used in the positive light of social networking, but how often are they not? Teenagers are now using these sites to harass and bully peers online. They also leave doors open for adult predators and identity theft. There has been research on the effects of social networking in teens that closely link them to low grades, psychological and social problems, and not being as active which leads them to being overweight. Statistics show that about 75% of teenagers have cell phones, which raises the question “Are we aware of what our teens are posting online”? There are many pros to our children using social media but we as parents have a duty to protect them. We must be good role models and be aware of privacy issues and concerns. There are advancement’s in today’s technology that make it easy for our children to network and stay in touch with their peers. Children who are not likely to socialize the traditional way because of shyness and social anxiety can use their PC’s to communicate with others. Children that have disabilities that prevent them from going out are still able to keep in contact with the outside world. Kids join groups with kids that have similar lifestyles and interest.
