Challenges and Rewards of Teaching/Final Exam

INTRODUCTION I know that my first year of teaching will be filled with many challenges and many rewards; after all you cannot have roses without thorns. Just being new to the profession is going to be challenging. I am sure I will be anxious, nervous and extremely excited to finally have my own class. I am confident that the excellent education that I will receive will help me meet the challenges head on and appreciate the rewards as they come. In this essay I will discuss my top three challenges and rewards as it relates to the text and information presented in this course.

CHALLENGES The multidimensional aspect of the classroom will be challenging. Having a large number of events occurring at the same time will make it difficult to decide what to deal with first. I will have to be prioritize the events as they unfold, therefore making snap decisions will become an everyday practice. This leads me to another challenge; classroom management.
According our textbook from 1960 to 2004, polls identified classroom management as one of teachers’ most challenging problems and from 2004 to present, it ranked second behind only behind school funding. (D.Kauchak, P. Eggen 2011) Lastly, I think that language diversity is a challenge that I may be faced with. As we read in chapter 4 of our text- “immigration has brought increasing numbers of students with limited backgrounds in English to our classrooms.”
( D. Kauchak, P. Eggen 2001). I cannot imagine how hard it would be to teach to students who with language limitations or if I could not understand them. It would be frustrating and for this reason I feel it will be a challenge.

REWARDS

It will be very rewarding to work teach little children, to watch them grow and learn. To have the privilege to be an intricate part of a child’s early learning experience is exciting. I consider having the opportunity to establish myself professionally in this field is a personal reward. Rewards in teaching include both intrinsic and extrinsic benefits. The intrinsic rewards motivate me the most. However, the schedule, benefits and salary are important to me. The summer breaks and holidays will allow me to balance work and family.

PERSONAL REFLECTION
Most all professions will have challenges and rewards. I am certain that being prepared and organized will aid in overcoming the challenges that I will be faced with. Having a good sense of humor will help with me cope with the day to day challenges. At the end of the day I feel the rewards will offset the challenges. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
