“A man’s character always takes its hue, more or less, from the form of color of things about him” - Fredrick Douglass. This quote connects to my life, US History and To Kill a Mockingbird by adapting. The chameleon is an animal who could adapt to its surroundings according to his environment. Jem is a character in To Kill a Mockingbird who adapts to his environment. When the colonies and settlers moved in they adapted to make the U.S what is today. Even in my own life I have to adapt to my surroundings.

In To Kill a Mockingbird, Jem is a character who adapts to his environment in order to fit in. To fit into Maycomb, Jem had to understand what kind of environment he is in. He noticed that everybody was spreading …show more content…
In the 1830s when Andrew Jackson was elected president, the Indian removal act was passed. It is said that, “the presidency in 1828 on a campaign promise of free land for white settlers.” There was settler flooding in and Andrew Jackson had to go into action and adapt. The settlers were spreading like wildfire and needed space, this started the idea of the Indian removal act, “In mid may 1830, congress gave Jackson his wish by passing the Indian removal act.” Also, in 1835 The Treaty of New Echota was overturned “all that was left Cherokee land (about 35,000 square miles in the region where Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina meet) in exchange for $5 million and a parcel of western prairie.” An extra 35,000 square miles was given to the settlers that adapted to live in the U.S. Andrew Jackson analyzed his environment and adapted to make it a better place. Adapting is like learning and learning is one of the biggest parts of our lives. If we don’t adapt we don’t learn. In my life there is many times where I had to adapt, whether it’s to school, in public and at home. But the most significant point of my life where I adapt is school. If I never changed how used to be I would be a totally different person. In kindergarten I realized that my grades needed to change. By doing this, I would have to change my work ethic and adapt to my changes. I worked harder and payed more attention. This showed off and my grades were getting better. I adapted to get better grades. I also realized in school you got to have a chance see people for a long period of time. I needed to think before I spoke to be polite and to not be rude. But I needed to change my personality too in order to fit in and make friends. I was really shy in first grade and I saw the kids who weren't shy were easy to talk to and more interesting. So I began saying jokes and making people laugh and it seemed to work. This made my life easier people would know me, you can’t be shy you have to be outgoing I realized, and so that is how I adapted. This is how adapting made me a better person, it helped me with my grades and helped with being social. Adapting is a tool and this how I used

To Kill a Mocking Bird

...Lee, Harper—To Kill a Mockingbird 1960 TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD by Harper Lee DEDICATION for Mr. Lee and Alice in consideration of Love & Affection Lawyers, I suppose, were children once. Charles Lamb PART ONE 1 When he was nearly thirteen, my brother Jem got his arm badly broken at the elbow. When it healed, and Jem’s fears of never being able to play football were assuaged, he was seldom self-conscious about his injury. His left arm was somewhat shorter than his right; when he stood or walked, the back of his hand was at right angles to his body, his thumb parallel to his thigh. He couldn’t have cared less, so long as he could pass and punt. When enough years had gone by to enable us to look back on them, we sometimes discussed the events leading to his accident. I maintain that the Ewells started it all, but Jem, who was four years my senior, said it started long before that. He said it began the summer Dill came to us, when Dill first gave us the idea of making Boo Radley come out. I said if he wanted to take a broad view of the thing, it really began with Andrew Jackson. If General Jackson hadn’t run the Creeks up the creek, Simon Finch would never have paddled up the Alabama, and where would we be if he hadn’t? We were far too old to settle an argument with a fist-fight, so we consulted Atticus. Our father said we were both right. Being Southerners, it was a source of shame to some members of the family that we had no recorded ancestors on either side of the Battle of Hastings...
