The Effects of Change in Business Change in any organization can be a stressful time for everybody involved. Whether changes are caused by the necessity of restructuring, changes caused through attrition in leadership or other means there will inevitably be those who resist even minor adjustments to what they have become accustomed to. According to Baack (2012), the resistance of people to change can be caused by several factors including being motivated by self-interest, from having a lack of understanding as to why the change is necessary, having low confidence in management and therefor not buying into the process or because they have little tolerance for diversion from their established norms.
Lack of Understanding Issues Baack (2012), noted that Nardelli possessed many of the traits that are often present in successful leaders; He possessed the imagination and initiative to try out a process improvement philosophy in a way as that is benefitted a different kind of business then what it was traditionally geared towards, he had received a good deal of wisdom from his previous jobs at General Electric and he also had confidence to demand a premium for his efforts which ultimately resulted in his removal. Many of these traits are enviable and desirable but any combination of these does not guarantee a great leader (8.3). As CEO Nardelli took a command and control approach to managing, instituting computerized inventory control and supply ordering systems, reducing the full time employee load to cut costs on benefits and overtime pay and began a full scale marketing and sales promotion to draw attention to what the company had to offer. Despite the success his attributes alone may not have been entirely to thank. Reshaped management teams and new front line employees that were brought in to interact and assist customers accomplished much of the work.
