Despite their feuding families, the couple is determined to make their relationship work. How Did Romeo And Juliet Change

...The layout of the collage was based on the change of Juliet. Juliet is, of course, in the center. There are scenes in black and white that represents her before she changed at the beginning of the play. The images in color symbolize her after her dynamic change when she meets Romeo. The first picture of the marriage sign with a X through it represents Juliet's thoughts on Marriage (“It is an Honour I dream not of”(Act 1, Scene 3)). This is important because it one of the dramatic shifts in Juliet's personality. The next image is of act 1, scene 3 when Lady Capulet and the Nurse discuss the idea of Juliet getting married to Paris. In this scene Juliet’s innocent, and obedient side is shown as she agrees to attempt to like Paris without the...

Romeo and Juliet - Haste

...William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet - Haste In the play, Romeo and Juliet, everything happens very quickly, this is why one of the main themes in Romeo and Juliet is haste. As a result of haste, Romeo and Juliet wind up married and dead within the course of five days. Throughout this play, three characters stand out when it comes to haste; Capulet, Juliet, and of course Romeo. Once Capulet decides that he wants Paris and Juliet to be married, he tries to move things along very quickly. At first, Capulet wants Paris to wait two years before he marries Juliet because she is so young. “My child is yet a stranger in the world, / She hath not seen the change of fourteen years; / Let two more summers wither in their pride, / Ere we may think her ripe to be a bride” (Shakespeare, 1.2.8-11). Capulet then changes his mind but is furious when Juliet does not want to marry Paris. “Is she not proud? doth she not count her blest, / Unworthy as she is, that we have wrought / So worthy a gentleman to be her bride?” (3.5.143-145), “Hang thee, young baggage, disobedient wretch! / I tell thee what: get thee to church a’Thursday, / Or never after look me in the face” (3.5.160-162). Although Juliet does not agree to marry Paris, Capulet agrees for her and makes the wedding date Thursday. Capulet is so anxious for this marriage to happen, that when Juliet finally agrees, he changes the date to Wednesday. Capulet is very quick to make this wedding happen as a result of haste. Due...

Romeo And Juliet Figurative Language

...Shakespearean tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, it can be inferred through the examination of language that Romeo is willing to do anything, such as change his name or personality, for the greater good and preservation of his relationship with Juliet, whereas Juliet is speculative and in some instances unwilling to make the same change. The word choice, or diction, Romeo and Juliet use in their moonlit conversation with each other shows a contrast in their willingness to change for their love. In the second scene of the second act, Romeo professes his willingness to change for his relationship by saying “Call me but love, and I’ll be new baptized” (2.2.54). To this Juliet skeptically questions “Art thou not romeo, and a Montague?” (2.2.65)....

The Development of Juliet's Character Throughout William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet

...The Development of Juliet's Character Throughout William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet Juliet is first introduced to us in Act 1 Scene 3, where we learn about Juliet’s character. We know she is a polite, obedient girl. We can see this in the line where she says: “Madam, I am here. What is your will?” (Act 1 Scene 3 L78). This shows that Juliet is a well-mannered girl because she addresses her mother as Madam. This quotation also shows Juliet as obedient and always willing to help her mother because she says: “What is your will?” This scene also tells us that Juliet is thirteen and has never considered marriage, something which would have been common for girls her age at that time. She is still pure and innocent. “It is an honour I dream not of.” (Act 1 Scene 3 L66). From this scene we can observe that Juliet has a closer relationship with the nurse rather than with her own mother. “Faith, I can tell her age unto an hour.” This example shows how well the nurse knows Juliet. Shakespeare shows us that Juliet is still of the age where she does what her mother asks of her, without question. In the same scene again she says “Well, think of marriage now.” Which also shows us that Juliet does what her mother says. In Act 1 Scene 5 the first conversation between Romeo and Juliet is in the form of a sonnet (poem of sixteen lines). Romeo and Juliet take it in turns to speak; which shows how perfect they are for each other. A good example: If I profane with...

Romeo and Juliet

...of the Function of Speed in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet is an avalanche. As a loose pebble in the snowcapped mountain wobbles in the wind, Romeo yodels to Juliet in the cliffs just to send it tumbling, lightly, down a vertical abyss. It does not end there, of course, for this pebble held back the rocks and boulders constituting the height of the peak, and the reaction now begins as each individual stone rolls with momentum. They pick up speed and snow, growing in velocity and size until the inevitable occurs and Romeo and Juliet are engulfed in the upheaval and finished forever. William Shakespeare’s version of the play Romeo and Juliet, taken from Arthur Brooke’s play similarly titled Romeus and Juliet, is a fast paced tragedy in which a boy and girl from two feuding families meet, fall in love, bond in matrimony, and commit suicide in a matter of four days. Compared to the nine-month romance that takes place in Brooke’s play, Shakespeare’s version is a consciously hastened piece of work during which the most significant parts of a young couple’s lives begin and end in less than one week. Speed, a well-utilized literary tool in Shakespeare’s play, serves to emphasize emotion, as opposed to reason, in the characters’ decisions. Through this device, Shakespeare demonstrates his skills as a playwright by showing control of time in the play. Perhaps the most well known episode in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the balcony scene is a prime example of passionate...

Shakespeare

...Romeo and Juliet Paper Imagine this; a Shakespeare movie, set in a modern day, run-down city. The city seems to have absolutely no shortage of gangs and mobs that are running the streets. Hotrod cars along with pistols and assault rifles make their presence ever so evident. With a wrong slip of the tongue, gun fire erupts in the streets of Verona. This was the context for one of my favorite movies, Romeo + Juliet directed by Baz Luhrmann back in 1996. William Shakespeare has written poetry and play-scripts that will continue to inspire people for centuries to come. Whether it be on a stage in your local high school or in the Broadway/Hollywood spot light on the big screen. William Shakespeare is known as possibly the greatest writer of the English language and deservingly so. Unfortunately Shakespeare’s plays have been subject to change and scrutiny throughout the years. When the play was first being performed the representations were different than they are today as males played both parts of Romeo & Juliet. The plays representation was changed when women were finally allowed on stage after some changes to the culture and society. Even Hollywood filmmakers have done a remake of Romeo & Juliet in which the movie isn’t even set in old English times but rather in modern day. William Shakespeare’s play Romeo & Juliet has remained the same as its message transcends time, yet its representation has changed as English society has changed. The play Romeo & Juliet...

Romeo And Juliet Vs West Side Story Essay

...Romeo and Juliet tells the story of two young lovers, their romance obstructed by a longstanding family feud. West Side Story retells this narrative with a change in setting. Instead of fair Verona, this musical is set in 1950s New York, and the protagonists come from rival gangs in place of rival families. The original Broadway production of West Side Story was nominated for six Tony awards, winning two (best choreography and best scenic design). By retelling the classics, creators can introduce new themes and perspectives. Each character in Romeo and Juliet has a corresponding character in West Side Story. Romeo and Juliet correspond to Tony and Maria, respectively. Romeo and Tony are very similar. At the beginning of the story, both of...

To begin with, Friar Laurence tries convincing Romeo that the feud between their families will end if he marries Juliet. “ In one respect i’ll thy assistant be; For this alliance may so happy prove to turn your households’ rancour to pure love” (2.3.93-95). This shows that Friar Laurence is guilty for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet because he is persuading Romeo to marry Juliet in order to end the feud. He should know that them getting married will only make it worse for them because they are getting married in a secret and their families are feuding and would not approve. Friar should be acting like the older and wiser adult...

The outcome of these decisions show the level of Romeo and Juliet’s maturity. In this story they take maturity to a whole other level. The Relationship Between Romeo And Juliet

...If Benvolio had ever made it mantua Romeo would have knew that Juliet was faking her death and he wouldn't have thought that she had actually killed herself. If he had gotten the letter from Juliet he could have met up with her when she woke up when they could have went to mantua together. Since Benvolio had gotten sick and got held back from Mantua, Romeo never received the letter from Juliet. Once he saw that what he thought was Juliet dead, he drank the rest of the poison and died to be with her. After Juliet woke up and seen Romeo was dead she stabbed herself with his dagger. If Romeo received the letter from Benvolio, Romeo wouldn’t have killed Paris either. If Rosalina loved Romeo in the beginning of the story like Romeo loved her, Romeo would have never fell in love with a Capulet. If Romeo was prevented from falling in love with Juliet, Romeo would still be in Verona, not kicked out. Also, Paris would still be alive. Mercutio and Tybalt wouldn’t have gotten into a fight and wouldn’t have died. If Rosalina would have loved Romeo, they would have gotten married without it being a secret since Rosalina is a Montague like Romeo. The conflict between the Montague’s and the Capulet’s would still be an issue....
