a. The FASB had three primary goals in developing the Codification:
1. Simplify user access by codifying all authoritative US GAAP in one spot.
2. Ensure that the codified content accurately represented authoritative US GAAP as of July1, 2009.
3. Create a codification research system that is up to date for the released results of standard-setting activity.

b. The Codification is expected to improve accounting practice by:
1. Reducing the amount of time and effort required to solve an accounting research issue
2. Mitigating the risk of noncompliance through improved usability of the literature
3. Provide accurate information with real-time updates as Accounting Standards Updates are released
4. Assisting the FASB with the research and convergence efforts.

c. The FASB ASC is composed of the following literature issued by various standard setters:
1. Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB)

b. Interpretations (FIN)
c. Technical Bulletins (FTB)

Fasb Codification Research

...GROUP RESEARCH PROJECT #1 FASB RESEARCH – CHAPTER 1 ISSUES #1 In recording a business combination, the acquiring company must recognize all identifiable intangible assets of the acquired company. This process can be complex and burdensome. Recently, the Private Company Council (PCC)* provided relief from some of these requirements for private (non-public) companies. What was that “relief” and what document was issued that provided it? *PCC is an arm of the FASB that is tasked with proposing amendments to GAAP that would apply only to private (non-public companies). #1) According to the Accounting Standards Update 2014-18, Business Combinations (Topic 805), private companies should no longer “recognize separately from goodwill (1) customer-related intangible assets unless they are capable of being sold or licensed independently from the other assets of the business and (2) noncompetition agreements.” This will cut down the complexity and cost while still providing interested parties with information to make decisions off of. #2 As we saw near the end of Chapter 1, the annual testing for impairment of indefinite life intangibles (such as goodwill) is VERY complicated (very quantitative) and time consuming. A few years ago, the FASB provided a ”qualitative” alternative to the annual impairment test. Briefly describe that alternative and what document was issued that allowed that alternative? #2) This amendment allows companies use a qualitative measurement...

What are the “topics” used in the ASC? There are six major topics that are used in the ASC. The first one is The General Principles Area which includes broad conceptual matters. Ifrs vs. Gaap

...IFRS vs. GAAP ACC/291 June 1, 2015 Judith Bines IFRS vs. GAAP The International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) are rules used to ensure ethical reporting of financial information. During Accounting 291, we have learned how to apply these rules however the differences between the United States GAAP and the IFRS make it difficult to compare companies. Some of these differences appear in the measurement of “fair value”, component depreciation, the revaluation of plant assets, product development expenditures, contingent liabilities, and the accounting for liabilities. Moving to Fair Value Measurement To the average person, the meaning of “fair value” would seem to have one meaning but this is not the case under GAAP and IFRS. “Under IFRS 1-3, the fair value of a financial liability is the cost to transfer it to another market participant in an orderly transaction at the measurement date. This is subtly different to how the fair value of a financial liability is determined under the previous rules in IAS 39 where the fair value of a financial liability is the amount at which it could be settled between knowledgeable, willing parties in an arm's-length transaction” (McCarroll & Khatri, 2012). “The Accounting Standards Update (ASU) provides a converged meaning of "fair value," defined as the price that would be received to sell an asset or paid to transfer a liability in an orderly transaction between market...
