Supervision Concepts and Skill – Building

Part 1. The first principle in the principle of organizing it parity principle. The parity principle states that personnel who are given responsibility must also be given enough authority to carry out that responsibility. (Certo, 2013). An example of parity principle is if I hired a contractor to build a house and I was the one picking the material and hiring workers for the job. When giving the task of building the home to the contractor, he accepts the responsibility for completing the task. The contractor also had the authority to hire his labors. By hiring the contractor I am giving the contractor the full authority and responsibility to build the house. The second principle is the unity of command. The unity of command principle states that each employee should have only one supervisor. An example of this would happen it there was a organization that has different departments with two different supervisors. If the one supervisor from say the sales department, interferes or tries to direct a employee from a different department other than sales department. By having unity of command, there is no such chance of employees receiving orders from several supervisors which would avoid confusion and aggravation. Chain of command is the flow of authority in an organization from one level of management to the next. (Certo, 2013). A great example is the structure of the U.S. military. With chain of command it clarifies issues of responsibility and authority within the military. Problems occur when there is a break in the chain of command, like misintrepid a message or orders given to the wrong person in charge. The last principle is the span of control, which is the number of employees a manager supervises. The manager’s span of control has increased a lot in today’s business
