Characteristics of Leader Effectiveness An effective leader is someone who is passionate about their goals and knows how to motivate, inspire, and influence others to come together and work as one to reach a common goal and conduct compelling and important changes. The realization of some kind of qualitative or quantitative result because of the actions and influences of an organizations leader is essentially how to evaluate their effectiveness. The characteristics of effectiveness, of course, depend on the goals of the leader and the organization. The fundamental characteristics of what makes an effective leader are mostly universal, however, the characteristics of leader effectiveness from one organization to another may have unique similarities and differences. This paper will serve as an analysis of similarities and differences in characteristics of effectiveness for several familiar leadership roles including an assistant coach, a teacher, and a minister

In business, the effectiveness of leadership and organizational performance are usually evaluated by using parameters such as balance sheets, bottom lines, market shares, revenues and shareholder values (Svenson, 2005). However, evaluating the effectiveness of leaders in a business organization can be vastly different than leaders of other types of organizations. As this paper is being written at this very point, the thought comes to mind – who is evaluating the leaders effectiveness? In the early 20th century, leadership traits were studied to determine what made certain people great leaders. Common thoughts of leadership back then suggested that leaders were born and not made. These perceptions originated out of an observation that many great leaders possessed something out of the ordinary—natural, inborn characteristics that allowed them to excel above the rest. This perception translated into limited opportunities for leadership among the common people, as they were not endowed with these “special” leadership characteristics. Early analyses of leadership, from the 1900s to the 1950s, differentiated between leader and follower characteristics.
