Checkpoint: Relationship Characteristics The closest relationship that I have and cherish, would be the relationship I have with my mother. Throughout my 22 years of life, she has been my constant. During multiple hardships in both of our lives, we have had each others' backs. She is my best friend, who I have no problem telling my problems to because I know that she loves me. We know when to push each other to accomplish each others' goals. In any relationship you need knowledge, trust, caring, interdependence, mutuality, and commitment. The three that mean the most to me, in my relationship with my mother would be knowledge, trust, and commitment. Being that she gave birth to me, my mother knows everything about me, that I don't hide from anybody else. However, as I grew up, I began to talk more about what I hide, while she did the same. That knowledge, that we both know each other better than anybody else, helps us get along better and help each other when the other is down on themselves. As an extension of having that knowledge of each other, my mother and I trust each other completely. We know we make mistakes, that things happen that we can't control. Knowing that, we have that trust that if something happens, we can trust each other to talk about what happened and to not keep it inside for long. I've known my mother my whole life, she gave birth to me, and as such I am committed to her. However, with everything we've been through, and seeing sacrifices that she has made for me, makes me that much more committed to our relationship, and to do everything I can to make sure she is doing well in life. I am committed to protecting her, supporting her decisions, and always being there for her when she needs me to be.
