First Eagle by Hillerman

...friction and conflict are significant. Therefore, a possible focus for discussions of this novel could be to examine the ways in which Hillerman ignores, acknowledges, utilizes, or highlights particular elements of the cultural and economic contexts in the service of his plot, characterization, and themes. Characters Hillerman populates the novel with a rich cast of characters whom he reveals through their speech, their actions, and their thoughts. He also describes their physical appearance so that readers form specific and distinguishing images of them. Jim Chee is portrayed as a "traditional" Navajo who has studied to become a hatathali, a traditional singer who can conduct traditional curing rituals; he is also a universityeducated (University of Arizona) lawman as is his former supervisor, now retired, Joe Leaphorn (Arizona State University). The relationship between the two is complicated and thus interesting. Chee has worked with "the Legendary Lieutenant" in the past and respects him highly, but he is not yet completely comfortable with Leaphorn. However, in light of Leaphorn's new status as a private investigator, "just Mr. Leaphorn now" and Chee's as Acting Lieutenant in charge of the Tuba City office, they work on a more equal footing,...

...crossing light-years because they cannot comprehend what they are doing. David Falkayn, Chee Lan, Adzel, and Muddlehead were in the saloon playing poker. Rather, the first three were. The computer was represented by an audiovisual sensor and a pair of metal arms. It was an advanced model, functioning at consciousness level, very little of its capability needed en route to maintain the systems of the ship. The live travelers had even less to do. "I'll bet a credit," said Chee. A blue chip clattered to the middle of the table. "Dear me." Adzel laid down his hand. "Can I fetch more refreshment for anyone?" "Thanks." Falkayn held out an empty beer mug. "I'll raise." He doubled the bet. After half a minute during which the faint purr of engines and ventilators came through silence: "Hey, Muddlehead, what's keeping you?" "The probabilities for and against me are calculable as being exactly balanced," said the flat artificial voice. Electronic brooding continued for a few seconds. "Very well," it decided, and matched Falkayn. "Ki-yao?" wondered Chee. Her whiskers dithered, her tail switched the stool on which she sat. "Well, if you insist." She raised back. Inwardly, the human jubilated. He had a full house. Outwardly, he pretended to ponder before he raised again. Muddlehead saw him. "Are you sure you don't need some readjustment somewhere?" Falkayn asked it. "Whom the gods would destroy," said Chee smugly. Again she raised back....

...web must be open on the firewall and IDS because if they weren’t, normal web traffic would not go through. This would make the internet useless for everyone. In order to mitigate this issue and still have connectivity, there are two things the University can do. First, the IT staff can deploy a Host-based Intrusion Prevention System (HIPS). This will be deployed to all of the University computers and centrally managed by a server in the data center. It is able to look at traffic and use behavioral analysis to prevent attacks. It will flag traffic or system functions that are not normal. It builds a baseline by looking at normal traffic patterns and use. If the computer starts to stray from this, it will alert the administrator (Chee, 2008). The benefits of installing a HIPS are large. This will protect the computers running on the...

The Importance Of Education In Singapore

...Singapore has meritocracy as a core principle of governance and according to Appold (2013), “meritocracy would discourage creativity”. Therefore, with meritocracy as the governing principle of Singapore, it is inevitable that students under the Singapore's education system will then lack creativity and innovation, which are one of the crucial 21st skills needed for the workforce. There is a narrow emphasis on academics and paper qualifications (Ng Chee Meng, 2016). In Singapore, national examinations such as the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE), the GCE ‘O’ Level and the GCE ‘A’ Level examinations determine the institution that a student will attend in the next phase of his education and assess a student’s ability on the particular subjects that he...

Employment Relations

...Most ethnic Chinese share a common Confucian legacy with the Japanese and Koreans, but the way the Asian Chinese run their organizations, differs from them. The unique way that the Chinese business system operates is known as ‘overseas Chinese management’ (Petzall, Abbott & Timo 2007). Although both the Japanese and Koreans and the Asian Chinese are collectivist, community is more important to the former, while family ties and ‘guanxi’ are more significant to the latter (Petzall, Abbott & Timo 2007). ‘Guanxi’ is a special relationship between two individuals due to the existence of particularistic ties who are obliged to maintain a long-term relationship with mutual commitment and loyalty (Chen & Chen 2004). Overseas Chinese management is practiced by ethnic Chinese nationals in Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and other Asian countries who run their own businesses. According to Petzall, Abbott and Timo (2007), these traditional Chinese family firms are usually small-scaled businesses that employ no more than 200 people. Being small-scaled, there is little need for labour specialization and a high degree of structure and formality within the organization. Thus, there are few rules and standard procedures and low files and records in such small family businesses. Although there is no clear hierarchy of authority, the assumed important positions like owners, executives and managerial roles are held by family members and by others who have that special ‘guanxi’. Decision-making...
